Not only did Sister Rosetta Tharpe play and sing gospel music with jazz groups in a show business environment, she was also the first artist to incorporate the city blues style from the 1930's with gospel music during the 1940's. a compelling performer and innovator, Sister Rosetta was a true star. This comprehensive 81 track set with it's fabulous artwork, many pictures which have not been seen before, will render all other Sister Rosetta Tharpe collections redundant.

ROSETTA
Grew up listening to a few 78 rpm records my Dad had of the SISTER. Not only was she a fabulous singer, SHE was a fantastic guitar player. The SISTER was playing guitar licks in the 30s and 40s that would surface in the ROCK explosion of the 50s. People talk about "what was the first rock record"... cue up one of SISTER'S gospel tunes and listen to her guitar style! She was fabulous!

Original Soul Sister
My grandmother had an old "Victrola" that played 78's. She always played Rosetta Thorpe's music. I was a young girl of six or seven. Sometimes, one needs to hear things from the past. When I play these CD's, I'm transferred back to my childhood.

Rather sloppily put together collection - but great music!
The music on this set of four CDs is fantastic, and shows that Sister Rosetta Tharpe was an awesome performer in her own right, and not simply a trailblazer, an inspiration, or an influence on future generations, as she is often portrayed. It is easy to appreciate the effect she has had on future generations, however, and there are hints of nascent rock and roll stylings (vocal and instrumental) throughout the collection, as well as the expected barn-storming gospel and soul performances which dominate the four discs. And that voice...Unfortunately, the packaging and the track selection do seem to have been rather slapdash in nature, with many tracks appearing multiple times over the four discs, and not always in the places indicated in the track list, either! The four discs are individually titled ("Shout, Sister, Shout", "Rock Me", "Singing In My Soul" and "This Train"), and I wouldn't be surprised if the four discs had previously been available, perhaps as individual albums with extra or "bonus" tracks tacked on at the end of each one - this would explain some of the duplication, especially why so many of the duplications occur towards the end of each CD.All in all, it's a wonderful compilation, it's just a pity that a little more work wasn't put into it prior to release.
