Is there a lot of space on the inside of the button or does the paper stay in place well?

They come in a few different sizes. My buttons turned out great. The insert (paper) didn't move at all.

Can you remove the pins? I want to stick magnets on the back.

Yes. After you pop the back off - which you gave to do anyway in order to insert photo or whatever you are looking to display-you can just undo the safety pin and it falls right out.

How large should the insert be in order to properly fit into the button?

The diameter of the clear button is about 6cm/2.4inch.
