A fascinating analysis
This text is a fascinating analysis of different models of rulership and statecraft, and their various philosophical, religious, and ideological underpinnings, as they evolved in competing colonial regimes in the New World over the course of several centuries. Extremely readable and well-detailed. Helpful for anyone researching or studying Early Modern History. Would highly recommend.

Intriguing collection of ideological arguments
This book is more-or-less an organized, annotated anthology of all the European intellectuals who considered imperial ideologies in Britain, France, and Spain between 1500 and 1800. This is ALL the intellectuals (not necessarily those who actually crafted policy or had the power to enforce their ideology) and it is confined to Europe (creoles, much less natives, have no voice in this book). The author integrates context, paraphrase, and quote rather seamlessly together, which I appreciated. The book is organized into 7 chapters, each of which considers a particular theme - the legacy of Rome, universal monarchy, conquest and settlement, expansion and preservation, colony and metropole, calculation of benefits, and from empire to federation.

An examination of the foundations of Empire
This book examines the different ideologies behind the empires of the great European powers. This book does not examine the impact of empire upon native people, that is not it's focus. It can be tedious at times, but overall is very informative and interesting.

and that is bad for readers and bad for sales
The title and subject are very interesting. However, there is no preview, and that is bad for readers and bad for sales.
