Would this be appropriate for a 235 lb person

Yes we got this for a lady close to 300 lbs

I have a drive wheelchair now for my husband new pad and swing out footrests the problem is I need a chair that measures 28 inches from the outside ?

This chair is about 28 inches outer wheel to outer wheel. I have very narrow doorways of 30 to 34 inches. I just make it though, but sometime knock my knuckles.

can a person when sitting move chair around by themsleves

Yes. The wheelchair has a standard handwheel located outside the drive wheel on both sides. The occupant of the wheelchair can move the wheelchair via the handwheel, without getting his/her hands dirty on the drive wheel. This assumes that the occupant's left and right hands and arms are operational.
