Would you recommend this kit for fixing a plastic/poly wheelbarrow tub that has cracked?

Definitely! As mentioned above, this kit comes equipped with wire mesh to imbed into the poly wheelbarrow and specially formulated rods to work with most any plastic. Make sure to sand a grove for the rods to fill using 40-80 grit sand paper. This will also help the rods stick to the wheelbarrow for better adhesion. Does it work on rusted holes for truck fender wells?

Yes it can if you are just trying to fill the hole with plastic. You also just use a glue stick and a lighter

what type of plastic are the welding sticks?

The rods that come in this kit are a special blend of plastics made to weld well with most plastic types, more of an epoxy. Flexible and durrable. Works best when applied along with our stainless steel wire mesh to provide extra durability and strength. If you need to match the plastic-type for a seamless weld (e.g. PE, ABS, or Nylon, etc.). Please look for our JounJip 7-different type welding rods which have the 7 most common types of plastics.

has the tip issue been fixed?

Before purchasing the Jounjip plastic welding tool, I had one from a discount tool store that developed an issue with the tip. This one, although it is very similar, has a very "beefy" tip. I also made sure that prior to using it, that I made sure all components on the wand were tight and not loose or wobbly. The first day, I had a job welding 3/8 plastic that took over 1 hour and had no problems with the welder.
