From the top Japanese auto-industry journalist comes this inimatably informed account of Honda Motor Company's birth out of the ashes of World War II and subsequent rise. As gripping as it is enlightening on far more than its main subject. Sato's unbiased reckoning won him Japan's premier non-fiction award. Available in English for the first time with a new chapter exclusive to this edition and prefaced by Paul Ingrassia, The Honda Myth is indispensable reading for industry insiders, business leaders and car enthusiasts. The first Japanese automaker to open a factory in the U.S., Honda grew its North American share in the 1970's with the introduction of the first environmentally friendly car, the Civic. Just as the manufacturer's combination of engineering excellence, racing dominance, and risk-taking was driving it into the international spotlight, however its trademark free-spiritedness threatening to take a backseat to bureacrary and complacency. Honda was the brainchild of two very different men. One, a genius engineer who never went to college but became the face of the company-Soichiro Honda. The other, a shrewd businessman who breezed into management and directed behind the scenes-Takeo Fujisawa. Apart, they may have never met international success, but together they made their mark. Yet, after Honda and Fujisawa's retirement, and decisively after the departure of heir apparent Shoichiro Irimajiri, Honda Motor looks like what it once seemed incapable of becoming-a faceless firm. Overshadowed by the ever-changing competition in areas like F1 racing and low-pollution engine technology that were its pride, the old hothouse of invention is less sexy these days. The Honda Myth argues that the cult worship of Soichiro Honda that Takeo Fujisawa formented, at first to the firm's great benefit, worked against it in subtle ways as well. Though the company's future looks bright, it offers no beaming face. Review: Rare insight into Soichiro Honda and the creation of Honda motors - There is little about Soichiro Honda, who really built Honda motor corporation literally from scratch, available here in the USA. Lots about the various Fords, GM CEOs and of course Lee Iacocca. But the man who built Honda from a maker of piston rings to the incredible conglomerate that is Honda of today didn't really have a good biography that I could find. This book really was a wonderful overview of his life, times and the creation of the Honda culture. I learned that the Honda culture is much more open than many conglomerates and that employees are encouraged to respectfully challenge leaders. Most unusual, and a key to understanding the Honda growth. If you want to learn about Mr Honda, or his company this book really opens the door to let you peer inside. For a gearhead it was a hard book to put down. Review: History on management and human interaction - You might not like car, you might not like honda's but you will love this human history and the many lessons on relationship and business management very interesting read

Good Read
This is a good book for anyone interested in how Honda grew into the biggest engine manufacture in the world. It decribes how they grew from a motorcycle manufacture to cars, boats and aircraft engines. Overall great book.

The Honda Myth: The genlus and his wake

Story of the little motorcycle company that can
Honda Motor Company is about a post-world war small motorcycle shop that demonstrated entrepreneurship and balanced technology and business management to advance. Going deep in describing the company's practices and the technology and management behind the company, Sato described how this company became what it is, and what prohibited the company from advanced even further. I would say that I learned more about business from this book than from some college courses.

all about Honda - the company, and thepersonnel.
Interesting book on the development of the Honda motorbike and car empire and the various people who figure in its development from an obscure Japanese engineering firm into the worldwide company of today. Unfortunately it does seem quite hard work reading it, but I will persevere.
