The opening on the opposite side of the tape pullout.** A: The peg at end of tape fits into the hole on tape container and then you press the button on the container and it tightens the tape automatically, giving you a much more accurate reading than holding by hand. It locks it in place so that when you remove the peg, your measurement is still showing. I first saw them at a Weight Loss Clinic and they used them to get more consistency between folks doing the measuring. **Q: Is the vinyl material cloth like? It makes it extremely easy to take your own measurements and it’s easy to read. Highly recommend! ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ LOVE!!! *by S***K on April 17, 2013* My teacher had a standard tape measure and it always grossed me out when it would hit the floor between body measure & then she'd put it in her mouth to hold... I bought this and it's AWESOME! I've used it for many months to do body measurements on many boot campers and it's great... anyone with issues is not using it correctly. It's easy to pull out, fits even very large chests and is quick and easy to retract. The only thing I'd suggest is make sure you control it or have fingers out of the way because it comes back like a tool tape measure! :) As to those who have particular complaints, let me detail: Some complain that the tape doesn't start at zero... That's to compensate for the part of the frame that goes against the body, which is roughly 2" Some have compalined that the tape isn't attached fully to the pin and ultimately separates... That's apparently a rare defect and there is NO product out there that has 100% accuracy in manufacturing. Look when you get yours - if you notice anything like that, exchange it. Some complain that the pin doesn't fit snugly into the slot and, therefore, constantly pops out... Two things here... it shouldn't fit "snugly" or it would negate the quick release... if it REALLY bothers you, put a piece or two of Scotch tape around the head and it will fit more snugly. I wouldn't recommend it, though, again because of the quick release nature. Secondly, if the head is popping out, it's because you don't have it flush/straight and won't get an accurate measurement anyway. Some complain about clicking or non-clicking and the ratcheting of the tape itself. It's supposed to do that. It's a "RETRACTABLE" tape measure... so it will come out to the point you need, you put the pin in, press the button to retract while the pin is in the hole, record your measurement, take it off, and then press the button to retract the tape. Easy peasy. HUGE PLUS: The tape, when pinned around a body part being measured, once you press the button to "tighten", will stay put and just hang there until you take the pin out. Handy if you're measuring yourself and need to record and are forgetful like me! I have used this tape for body measurements on roughly 10-15 boot campers twice every 6 weeks since August 2012.
