No it is NOT mandatory for a hamster's diet but, it IS very good for them. I use a mixture of seed-feed, like Vita Craft Dwarf formula, AND Mazuri pellets. That, and some small bits of fresh vegetables. I've had dwarf's live up to, and a few just past 3-years. best luck to you and your little one's!
