    Somewhat overwritten, but still a must-have for Vulcan buffs

Although the English Electric Lightning has always been in the running, the Avro Vulcan has always been my favorite British Cold War military aircraft. Originally published in 2006 as "The Avro Vulcan Story," this revised edition was actually published four years after Tim McLelland's death in 2015. It covers the entirety of the Vulcan's career, from the initial design phase, through flight testing and introduction to RAF service, the entry of the 'B.2' variant into service, overseas deployments, Falklands War operations, and finally retirement.Scattered throughout are lengthy first-hand accounts by designers, pilots, "back-seaters," and groundcrew. There are slightly more than 400 illustrations in all, including black and white and color photographs, design sketches, maps, color profiles, and technical diagrams from the aircrew manual. The appendixes themselves occupy more than a third of the book's length and include brief summaries of each Vulcan's career with important dates, descriptions of Vulcan wings, bases, and squadrons, and 70 pages of excerpts from the B.2 aircrew manual. Needless to say, there's a lot of stuff here.As in-depth as this book might be, it's still rather flawed. As a "revised" edition, it's somewhat sloppy. The appendix listing the fate of every production airframe has been updated to 2019, but the main text is still "stuck" in 2006, with the fate of XH558 still up in the air. Many of the photographs are rather murky or washed out, giving it a dated look. The writing style can be excessively verbose, with first-hand accounts rambling on for pages and much of the material on Britain's nuclear weapons program being secondary to the Vulcan story. Though I imagine the staff at Crecy wanted to respect the author's wishes, a little editing wouldn't have hurt.Flaws aside, this is probably the most thorough narrative history of the Vulcan I've read so far. The Haynes "manual" is fine on a technical level, and David Filde's book is interesting as a data dump, but this is the only one the pulls together the technical, operational, and personal side of things effectively.

Very good book. I spent 5 years flying the Vulcan Mk 1A. 3 of those years as a Captain. It was large aircraft but handled well when you got used to it!
