Arturia- high quality, unique, reasonably priced.
so cool, I recommend a midi controller for it. Arturia is great though; keep them in n business. buy their stuff. it is a robust and fully featured 4 "paraphonic" (not polyphonic) little synthesizer, 20+ synth engines, firmware updates, a small learning curve, it's about the same size as a 13" laptop. You can pop it in a backpack if needed. Lots 6con connectivity options. Not too big, not too small. Easy to carry around, portable. I am a fan. Give arturia your money ~ they're one of the few companies out there trying to innovate and improve their products. It seems like they care and that is a rare thing these days.

Does what my other synths can't!
I was ready to spring for my first Behringer clone...the 2600, when I realized that I was about to pay a lot of money for something that I already had...mono analog synths. I love the old Arp sound, but it is a nuance that I consider nonessential at this point. And, quite frankly, I miss being able to save my sonic creations to memory. Polyphony would be nice too. So, after watching tons of Youtube videos, I decided on the Arturia Microfreak...and I'm glad I did! It has a LOT of sound design potential, and using the Mod Matrix is a joy. The arp and sequencer are very fun and flexible, and the whole design seems catered to evolving and expressive sounds. The capacitance keyboard is odd, but just adds to the quirky expressiveness of the instrument. The firmware updates are awesome and easy to install. And btw...with a little patience, the vocoder works surprisingly well! And yes...besides being a decent four voice polyphonic synth, it now has a powerful unison mode. Thick! No onboard effects though. :( For a great video that covers all the features in detail, I recommend "Loopop" on Youtube. Very informative! I'm very happy with my Microfreak. I love my analogs, but adding a digital synth to my audio arsenal filled that void perfectly and opened up many new avenues of sonic exploration for me. There are literally years of tweaking sounds in this amazing yet inexpensive synth! And it's nice knowing that all my careful crafted sounds can be stashed safely away on my computer for future use...no more use it or lose it programming sessions! Five stars!

A Great Intro to Hardware Synthesizers
My intro to hands on synthesizers. Though it is a unique device, it is very beginner friendly and powerful. If you want to learn how to shape sounds instead of just using presets, this is a great tool. There are plenty of presets and oscillator types but my favorite thing is to open an “init” patch and get creative. This thing can generate some pretty great sounds.

***JUST GET IT!*** Unbelievable product, endless inspiration.
Initial review as a Hip Hop producer (boom bap) who is primarily sample based. I'm fairly savvy with the use of VST synths but never tried hardware synths. I've used Ableton, FL, Maschine and MPC and have about 7 years of experience. I paired this with my SP 404 Mk2 using a single 1/4" patch cable into the mono input of the SP. Endless, let me repeat...ENDLESS sound sources! Endless inspiration. I have ZERO use for anything else in order to get absolute bangers, and that's not even consciously designing sound. When tweaking sounds, I'm literally like a kid unconsciously scribbling anything on paper and then turning it into my favorite tracks ever. The sounds are rich and offer lots of sonic possibilities when chopping, pitching and reversing. Perfect size and weight and right at home in a backpack. My only gripes thus far are (1) It's packaged without the cable to connect to your computer. This is a requirement if you want to download the latest firmware (although NOT necessary to get up and running) Luckily I had plenty of cords lying around from other midi gear. (2) The power cord is long and bulky. (This might be a pro for others, but not for me...I will switch to a power bank.) Best purchase I've made in a very long time. Thrilled with this product and I'm not easily impressed.

An Amazing Product! In the same league as the Microkorg!
First, let me say I own 6 professional synthesizers, so I am able to offer comments with extensive knowlege of how this product measures up against other synths. I've not yet spent much time with the Microfreak, but wanted to share my excitement over it should others be shopping for this type of product for Christmas. I was leary of the touch-sensitive keybed, expecting it to be less satisfying than real keys that move when depressed. To my amazement, these keys are actually amazing. They seem very reliable and functional. I love them. I wasn't crazy about this synth having a mono ouput with no built-in effects, but when I played it through my DAW (Logic Pro X) and added a slight chorus and reverb, I was super impressed with the sound. This synth is the most versitile synth I've seen to date and I've been playing synths for 40 years! The wide array of sounds is creamy and rich. I can't imagine that any synth enthusiast wouldn't love this synth. I'm amazed that it is so affordable. Before this, the Microkorg was THE affordable synth to have. But, this just might be in the same league! I'm happy to say I have both! YAY! I will post an update when I spend more time with it.

Pound For Pound, The Most Possibilities For The Money!
I've owned a MicroBrute for about 6 months now, and I have a bunch of other gear including everything from boutique effects pedals to crappy CasioTone keyboards from Goodwill to a set of microcassete recorders I use to get ideas down quick to a cheap beginner electric guitar (yes, a Squire, how'd you know?!). I hope this demonstrates that what I'm about to say isn't hyperbole, but I NEVER get bored with the MicroFreak, and I don't think I ever will. For its price point, I really don't think you can find a synthesizer that has SO MANY features and things you can do. The last firmware update even allows you to upload your own samples, so you can use it as a drum machine or weird vocal sample chopper/editor to whatever weird ideas you can think up. While I still love my MicroBrute and other gear, there's just something about the depth and breadth of what the MicroFreak can do that if I find myself running out of steam or not getting the results I'm looking for, I just need to load another preset and start editing it, or even just change the insanely deep Mod Matrix to throw things into a new avenue. The first night I sat down to play this synth, I was somehow shocked at how easy it was to plug it in, turn it on, and start playing the presets and twiddling knobs and things. Before I even got to preset 100, at least two hours had gone by and I realized I had been sitting cross-legged for so long my legs were asleep. I mean, the Runtz I was smoking probably helped, too. Now let's address the elephant in the room: the keyboard. As with the MicroBrute I'll tell you, I am 6'4" and have fairly large hands but I have never found the MicroFreak limiting. I actually adore the aftertouch aspects of the keyboard, I find it helps me get some expressiveness to what I'm doing. I can definitely understand why a lot of people probably just hook up a MIDI keyboard but if you're coming from less of a trained piano/keyboard background and more of a "I like weird/creative ways of making and interacting with music" background, like me, you'll likely not miss a full and normal keyboard. Now, I know some people criticize this synth because it doesn't have any onboard effects. But not only can you get "free" effects by using programs like Audacity or other free audio editors and DAWs, but if you're any kind of serious gear-head who wants more options and more tangible control from your effects, you'll want to get dedicated effects pedals, anyway. Hell even a cheap multi-effects unit can open up the possibilities of sound to an almost unlimited level. Ever since getting the MicroFreak, I effectively see it as the centerpiece of my whole music world even if I don't turn it on every time I sit down to play music. I know it's not for everyone, but given the combination of the features upon features it has, the depth and breadth of sound design possibilities, and the compact size, I could genuinely see myself taking this on a long train trip or flight and passing the time that way. Arturia is just fantastic and I love that they keep doing new things instead of the Behringer approach (no shade but does anyone want anything but cheap reproductions of vintage/unavailable gear from them?).

Your mileage may vary
My unit was defective unfortunately. Full disclosure: I bought a "refurbished" unit and maybe that's my first mistake. I plugged everything up, it powers on but will not get past the "microfreak" screen. To add insult to injury I can actually hear a "thud" noise when I plug up to my Oontz speaker and turn the unit on At first I thought it was a quirk of the synth itself but further research shows this is a known issue with some units In my case, even the recommended restart of shift+arp+Oct isn't making any changes at all Even when trying to write firmware changes, the unit stops at exactly 40% every time in the midi control center the firmware is listed as "unknown" Very discouraging. I know the unit (when it works) sounds heavenly as an aside this has also shed light that arturia really isn't built with Linux in mind.

Fantastic little synth
Love it so many great sounds. Easy to use. Good value for money. The only gripe I have is the on/off switch is very small and feels a little small I think a push button would be better.

Tell your relatives you’ll see them in six months
After a lot of YouTube videos and reading online I purchased this to integrate into my dawless setup. Fantastic palette of sounds and latest firmware gives a vocoder. If you’re starting out this is very approachable, if you are experienced, the mod matrix alone will blow your mind. The granular and wavetables guarantee your wife will be sending you emails asking where you are. Only criticism is patch storage out of box - there aren’t groups of sounds that compliment, you go from vocoder to sequence to bass in two clicks. Buchla keyboard very expressive with after touch - I’m using the Microfreak outboard of keystep pro so don’t use it much but it does add a neat effect. Right after buying this you’ll be looking for some type of delay / reverb - stock sound is a bit flat but still liveable …. But reverb is like bacon…. Onboard sequencer is meh if you already have one, but is functional. ARP and HOLD are excellent. Highly recommend!!
