Old Cutler Marlin Spike

The colonial #1758, is of very good quality, especially when you consider the price. The wood handle has a matte finish. The metal parts appear to be polished stainless steel. I put an edge on the blade itself because I particularly like a very sharp knife. He took the edge well and after using it to do a little whittling it is my belief that the edge will hold well. Also because I purchased this knife with the Marlin Spike which I have used to take apart some knots I can attest that it is, well made, it locks into place which I did not know when I purchased it.you push down on the layered loop to release it. Overall I recommend this knife and really do not believe you will find a finer knife anywhere near this price. And while I know I have used the word price twice in this, it is only because I purchased this not to be a knock around knife. But having held it and used it I am much surprised by the quality. If you're considering a knife of this type do not hesitate, you will be pleasantly surprised by this one.

I received the order quickly, but it was not as pictured. There are two versions of this knife. 1757 is the other one I believe and the wood is not as dark and does not come with the attached lanyard. At the time of this review - the knife is listed as coming with "lanyard attached". It does not say with lanyard attachment or anything else that could be misconstrued. The knife I received is not as nice looking as the one in the picture.I see that the product description has been changed. It accurately reflects what you will receive. The actual knife that I received seems to be a quality knife and I should have reflected that in my original review. The knife is fairly large and might not be comfortable to carry in your pocket. It is of solid construction and the spike is sharp. Overall it is a well made knife. The wood handle is more of a dark brown than a reddish brown as pictured.

The description said it would include a lanyard. But sadly it did "knot" (sorry could not resist). Not a big deal I bought some cord at the local hardware store and did it myself.

I bought this as a Christmas gift for my dad and was disappointed that it did not come with a lanyard even though it shows one in the picture and states that one comes with it in the description. The shackle that holds the lanyard is also very loose. Other than that, the knife itself is nice and the order was processed very quickly.

My rope teacher told me to get a rigger knife for safety, and to make sure I got one with the belt holster / case included, as they are virtually impossible to buy separately. Thus, I chose this one, despite some others that looked nicer / more badass. I am happy to report that the knife itself seems very high quality, and the aesthetic has grown on me a lot.Randomly, the package came with a second knife! It's cheap looking, but... free knife? Unexpected.

I bought this knife for the marlin spike and it saved the day the first time out.

Very well made and the person who received it as a gift was extremely happy with it. I recommend it.
