I would stick to your normal size. It should fit just right. I ordered a Large and I'm 5'3 and 200lb. It fit me tight in the right areas as I wanted.

do the plaid ones have snaps at the crotch?

I have the red one and h there are not snaps in the crotch area, only on the backside
