If he can get a message to his brothers he knows they will save him.Shea Peterson doesn't know where her special ability to connect with other's minds comes from. It is something she was taught to hide from a very young age. She and her family have been hunted for as long as she can remember. When she connects with Nathan and feels his immense pain she is determined to do what she can to help him. A bond that cannot be broken forms between the two lost souls.Nathan may be saved but the danger isn't over. He knows Shea is out there somewhere running for her life and he needs to get to her before it's too late. Can Nathan save the woman who kept him alive by Whispers in the Dark?Whispers in the Dark is a deeply emotional, highly satisfying edge of your seat read! I could not get enough of this take charge story. From the very first page I was mesmerized by Nathan's stark situation and his fascinating connection with Shea. Before reading Whispers in the Dark I would never have believed that the hero and heroine of a story could form such a deep and magical connection via the mind before actually meeting and that I would like it much less love it. The conversations between Nathan and Shea are much more intimate than anything I've read. Ms. Banks characters cut through all the bull and get right to the nitty gritty which turns Whispers in the Dark into a compelling and cutting-edge romance.Whispers in the Dark takes the KGI series into a bit of a different direction with its addition of telepathic characters. I'm a huge fan of everything paranormal and science fiction so this doesn't bother me but everyone may not enjoy it. I must say that Shea's ability makes this story amazing. The paths that it takes the Kelly brothers and their KGI associates down are enthralling. Who doesn't love a conspiracy theory? I love that the mystery surrounding Shea and her sister Grace's abilities will continue at least into the next book if not further.Maya Banks can do no wrong with her Kelly brothers, Whispers in the Dark is perfect!Reviewed by MirandaFor Joyfully Reviewed

Loved it!
My Review:I have adored the KGI series so far, and let me just say up front on this review that, hands down, this is my favorite book in the series so far. I cannot fully explain to you how much I truly loved this book, but I am going to try! I love the entire premise of this story.Shea has special telepathic powers. Overall, they have made her life hell, but she can't ignore the telepathic communications from a soldier being tortured who is on the brink of giving up, Nathan Kelly. After a month of systematic torture and watching two of his friends be murdered, Nathan is ready to die...until he hears Shea in his mind telling him not to give up. Shea can enter peoples minds and redirect their pain. For Nathan these skills save his life and enable him to survive. They also create an incredible bond between these two people. But when Nathan is rescued, Shea cuts off their connection because she is in her own fight for her life as she is being hunted for her abilities and is on the run. Only when things get desperate and a weak moment on Shea's part causes their connection to flare back to life. That's when the entire KGI team swings into action to save Shea and in turn, save Nathan, who is suffering because of the loss of his mental bond with her.I loved, loved, LOVED this story! OMG, I LOVE the bond that Nathan and Shea share. The emotional level of it is so incredible to read and experience through them. I love that they are both wounded characters who truly need each other to survive. I love how strong that Shea is. OMG, she takes on the wounds of the person that she takes the pain from and she did this for Nathan over and over again...on purpose to save him...talk about ultimate sacrifice.I loved that we got to see an even deeper level of the dynamic between the Kelly brothers. They have a huge part in this story as they are all working together to save Shea. I love them together and the way that they worry about Nathan and support him in this book....just so incredible! To me, everything about this story was just absolutely perfect! But you all know me, I like heavy emotion and angst in my stories. This is going to be one of those books that you either really love or really hate as you roll your eyes because it is too over-the-top. This is where I choose to read for enjoyment and suspend disbelief so that I simply can enjoy the process of reading. But not everyone is like that, SO go into this book knowing yourself as a reader. For me, it was perfect, but it is not for everyone. I cannot wait for Grace (Shea's sister) and Rio's book...it's going to be another great one!! :o)

Mostly enjoyable
In this typical Maya Banks story, strong, protective, super-masculine guys protect a virtually-homeless heroine--one of the brothers (this time only one) falling passionately and fiercely in love with her. I have to give Banks credit. The heroine is far from weak, even though she is beaten down by her circumstances and sufficiently feminine. I also liked the cohesiveness of the military-for-hire teams and the family in general. The plot moves and the prose is smooth. I blew through this book in no time at all.The brothers' banter and masculine show of emotions was well done. One problem with that area... In portraying her guys well, bad language abounds. Though some of it feels appropriate to the characterization, and the F bomb is kept to a minimum, it gets excessive - with g*ddamn appearing 74 times. I could have done without that. I guess the hero's dad is the only one who honors the God he prays to.The hero and heroine's unique bond makes for a great emotional intimacy builder--intense and believable. For that alone, I'd give the author five stars. I also liked that the story moved, and the action was thrilling and good. Though explicit, Banks doesn't throw in too much sex. And when she does, it's less gratuitous than some of her other novels. On the negative, however, the issues of family acceptance and support are a little heavy-handed. I also was disappointed by the ending. Banks obviously left this open for a sequel, but in doing so, didn't tie up enough loose ends.*Plot spoiler Alert!*I kept waiting for a particular character to reappear, but that person didn't. A letter or some other clue--even if it didn't give absolute proof of life and or safety--would have made for a more satisfying end. As it was, the author dragged the story out only to arrange her setup for the next book.*End of Plot Spoiler*All in all, not a bad read. Four stars.

Great read and one great series
Just love the KGI novels by Banks. I have all of them and this one is one of my favorites.Every one is a great read and full of action, action and oh yeah, great sex.Nathan and Joe are twins. They are just two of the Kelly Brothers. Neither one belongs to KGI yet. They are both enlisted in the Army and are in Afghanistan.KGI is a company run by the Kelly's. Its a spec ops operation that does work for the Govt and private individuals. All the Kelly brothers are ex Spec Ops and members of KGI. Joe and Nathan will be as well when they're enlistments are up.Nathan heads out on patrol in Astan. His brother Joe was wounded earlier and is in the hospital with a broken leg so not on this mission.Nathans patrol is ambushed and Nathan, Swanny and a few others are captured. The rest are dead.Back in the States his brothers are going crazy trying to find out where Nathan is. Astan is a big place the info given by Joe just doesn't pinpoint Nathans last location. They finally get lucky when a e-mail, sent by an unknown, lands on their boards. They now know where to look for Nathan.KGI rescues Nathan and Swanny after they had escaped and gets them home.So begins one great read.We have a Nathan who doesn't know how to explain Shea, his family that doesn't quite know how to deal with him since his return, folks hunting for Shea, a Govt guy who's hunting Shea, a Shea with some serious powers, her missing sister, bad guys all over the place and KGI kicking ass.Just a great read and well worth five stars.

WOW!!!!!!! 10 STARS
This is the first book I read of this series, and it was a wow! The story was great, fast paced, with many twists and turns, but never neglecting the intense romance of the main couple. Both hero and heroine were wonderfult, and together they were magic, I particularly enjoyed their psychic/emotianal connection. I did not mind one bit their almost instant love, as a matter of fact I am always delighted when the hero falls hard for the heroine quickly, and is not in denial about it either (it is a matter of personal preference). There were so many aspects of this story I loved, for example I love how the hero loved the heroine, how invested he was in their relationship and how eager he was to fight for it. Another thing about this book that had me over the moon, was the fact, that for once, it was the He who was so insecured about his appearance. I'm so sick and tired of reading about women who feel they don't measure up in the looks department to the "gorgeousness": of the hero. I also very much enjoyed that there was a lot of his point of view in the story, especially during love making, it was not all about what she was feeling. And I was very grateful that the heroine's every other thought was not about her body's lustful reactions to the hero. Yes, I wish there had been fewer love scenes, and definitely less explicit, but those are easy to dismiss for me (by glossing over them). What I cannot dismiss is a jerk of a hero, and Nathan was just about perfect for all his imperfections. I was shock when I realized that the author was Maya Banks. I have read other books from this author (but not from this series) that I absolutely hated. But this one is a gem. However, I will not be reading "When Day Breaks", even though I am a sucker for a Beauty & the Beast theme and I like it best when the heroine is very beautiful, as in the case of this book. The reason being that I can't stand when the heroine does the persuing (regardless of the reason), and by the reviews I read, she not only does all the pursuing, but she does so aggresively. And when I read one of the reviewers state, that even though Eden was a virgin, she forgot all about it, because she was so turned on by the hero, I was completely put off. This scenario (for me) falls into the, please, don't insult my intelligence category.

The KGI Series Is 10 Star Good
I love this series about a group of brothers who own a paramilitary outfit called the KGI. They all live close together, and even their parents live nearby. Their friends are `mothered' by their mom, and they have all the fantasy relationships that people dream about. The siblings and family members genuinely like each other. The heros all meet and marry strong heroines. Apparently everyone is rich. Every one of the men are pilots, and best of all, they never run out of cold beer or groceries.Synopsis:U.S. Soldier Nathan is captured by the enemy in Afghanistan. He is tortured. Somewhere at the point where he'd rather die than keep going, someone `whispers in the dark' in his mind. He thinks it's part of his unconscious in survival mode, but plays along. However, it's a real voice from a real woman named Shea. Shea reaches through the night, across the planet and selflessly shares peace with Nathan and `absorbs' his pain, and his injuries.IMO:Complicated right? Banks makes this story line work. I thought it might be like introducing Scoobie-Doo to Die Hard, but nope. Banks weaves every bit as wonderful a story as the earlier KGI books that have so captivated us and takes the reader along to learn Shea's story.Synopsis Continued:Shea helps Nathan and another soldier escape. Together with her sister `Grace' they save the life of the 2nd soldier using Shea's link to Nathan as a conduit. Nathan comes home, but is not recovering as he should. Meanwhile Shea is running from mysterious men who wish to capture her and the sister that she separated from in order to provide another layer of protection for each other. If neither sister knows where the other is, they can't be forced to give up the location.Shea gets captured, tortured and manages to escape. She reaches out to Nathan who literally jumps on a jet and travels cross country to rescue her from a drainage culvert. Nathan and his brothers bring her to the Kelly compound. Much to Shea's surprise, his family half kills her with hugs and gratitude for her role in saving Nathan. Nathan has fallen head over heals in love with Shea. Then she is kidnaped in a dramatic fashionSPOILER: Kidnapper jumps from a cliff with her unconscious body into a waiting hovering helicopter ! How's that for action imagery for ya? Turns out Resnick is behind the taking. He believes he is possibly her sibling and for some unfathomable reason wants to protect her by locking her away and drugging her to dampen her telepathic power. (See! Now that's more of a normal sibling relationship! Hah!) She manages to escape, shoots Resnick, (siblings! Hah!) then a few blocks away, still seriously sick on the drugs Resnick had her injected with, is recaptured by the original kidnappers who tortured her for Grace's location. With Joe's help, she manages to power through and give the KGI boys just enough Intel to help them affect her rescue from a mountain citadel. During the rescue, Nathan is stabbed. Even unconscious, Shea takes his pain and injuries on herself, and almost bleeds to death before they can wake her up to sever the telepathic bond she has with Nathan. With the help of Nathan's sister in laws, she overcomes her near catatonic state after the torture she suffered and they live happily ever after.Favorite line:"You are going to marry her, aren't you?" Donovan asked dryly. "Tell me I'm not busting my (bleep) here and you end up not having the balls to propose.""Swear to God, you two need to shut the (bleep) up," Nathan said around the knot in his throat.Go buy this whole series. Forget 5 stars, they are 10 star good! The Darkest Hour - Ethan rescues his wife whom everyone thought was dead.Hidden Away - Garrett is sent on baby sitting duty that soon turns deadly. No Place To Run - Sam's ex shows up pregnant with a bullet wound chased by killers.

Love Maya Banks, Love KGI, but...
I love Maya Banks' books. I've loved/really liked the KGI series. And I liked this book too... as long as I don't think too hard. The concept is great: Soldier(Nathan) held captive and being tortured in a cave in the middle of Afghanistan. A telepathic woman (Shea) who reached him in the darkness and who he believes to be an angel. She takes his pain, gives him hope to survive and actually helps him to escape. This had the potential to be so good. And I love paranormal romance so I didn't mind this little side trip Maya Banks has taken with the series. Where it falls flat is where Shea's telepathy is used as some kind of emotional band-aid for every issue that crops up.Nathan: He's been tortured every day for two months, seen his fellow soldiers executed, he thinks he's going crazy, he's covered in scars, he's disconnected from his family - but when he meets up with Shea 6 months after escaping it's like, "hey, I can talk to this chick in my head, everything is better now."Shea: She's running for her life, she's worried for her sister, she's just found out she's a lab experiment - but when Nathan comes along and says "it's going to be okay" (in her head, of course), it's all good. This isn't to say that these issues weren't acknowledged in the book. But each time a character had a problem it seemed to be resolved by the other one saying "there, there. It's ok. I love you." Telepathically, of course. This is one book where I actually wanted the characters to be more damaged. The basic concept for this book had the potential to have so much emotion and romance, but was basically glossed over. The characters themselves were great with a few exceptions. While Shea comes across as generous, self-sufficient and loving her sidetrips into martyrdom on the behalf of Nathan and her sister Grace were a bit excessive. And while I absolutley adore emotional vulnerability in an alpha hero, Nathan occassionally came across as slightly too insecure without the aforementioned emotional issues to back it up.In saying all this, the book was good if you just take it as it is. It had some great moments, the action was a steady pace throughout the book, the Kelly's are there for the whole journey, it sets it up nicely for the next book in the series and I give it 3 out of 5 stars. I probably would have given this book a 4 out of 5 stars if the first section hadn't shown so much promise and raised my expectations.

Please Ms. Banks may I have another????
Nathan Kelly has been captured and is slowly giving up hope. Just when he is at his lowest, a gentle breeze slowly enters his mind and with it, he knows warmth and peace. Unsure and quite unbelieving at first, Nathan does his best to explain away the voice in his head. He figures he has finally gone over the deep end and is imagining the angel that he comes to know as Shea. Shea is very real, however, and is the reason Nathan makes it out alive. When she disconnected from Nathan's mind after his rescue, he at once felt the emptiness and now, even months later, Nathan finds himself trying to explain why he is unable to go forward with his life. And then he hears her plea for help.Maya Banks has written a truly amazing book with WHISPERS IN THE DARK. It is emotional, gripping, suspenseful, and just plain fantastic. Empathy and telepathy are generally unknown and frighteningly looked at as something that doesn't happen or something that is faked. But in WHISPERS IN THE DARK, Ms. Banks makes me believe that Shea and Nathan are connected. She makes me believe in happily ever afters, and she once again proves to me that as a writer, there are none better.Natalie S.

Whispers in the Dark

Absolutely Mind-blowing!!!
This book was absolutely fabulous. I had been wanting to read this book for ages when I finally decided to buy in ebook form. I was totally hooked from the 1st page itself. It made me read on to find out what would happen next.It starts off as Nathan is captured and tortured by some sadistic people. He is at his lowest ebb when someone gives him some solace and encouragement of hope. She helps him to endure various tortures and valiantly helps him escape. What's so different about that you ask? well the difference being Shea the woman who helps Nathan is just a voice in his head and they develop a connection through that. She takes his pain and helps him to endure his captivity until he escapes.unbeknown to Nathan, Shea is being hunted by some people who are after her because of her special ability. This time its Nathan's turn to rescue Shea. What will happen when they meet face-to-face? Will they fall in love with each other? Obviously as its a romance but how they both come to terms with their captivity and ensuing trouble is what makes them stronger.Nathan family was fabulous. Some people would say that they were too sugary sweet but I love families like that - they might have arguments but they love each other alot and would and have been their for each other through thick and thin.Since I have finished this book, I have reread this book many many times. Its a book that can be read a hundred times without getting bored. Its a lovely story with that paranormal aspect to it which was great.I look forward to reading future books in this series.Next book to read is Echoes at Dawn which is Grace (Shea's sister) and Rio's story. Review will soon follow.
