Japan Fashion Now

This is an absolutely fabulous Picture book of the Japanese fashion during the last few decades. The printing is okay, but the captions describing the photos is almost unreadable. It is extremely small, and in such light ink that even with magnifying glasses it is a chore to read. This was so disappointing.

I also own "Future Beauty: Thirty Years of Japanese Fashion" and a handful of other Japanese fashion books. I enjoyed this one as well- it's a great standalone book if you don't own any other Japanese fashion books. I do wish they had chosen a different cover... but inside it's very comprehensive and covers the history well. It covers The Greats of modern Japanese fashion- Yohji, Rei, Issey, etc. and gets into more good stuff as you progress through the book. Though, I really enjoyed the beginning- it gives a historical rundown of how globalization effected Japan even before the modern era and also explained the general history of clothes and groups in Japan. This book focuses more on style tribes and gives a nice breakdown with solid information. The photos are great. They're high quality and are large. A reviewer says the images' captions are small, but I prefer them this size. They are small but are readable. The captions don't provide much additional information anyway, and I like that they are not obstructing in terms of aesthetics.It's always refreshing to come across a fashion book that interlaces history, culture, and fashion together without sounding too textbook-like or too bare. The layout of the book is great and doesn't put too much information on each page; for fashion books, that's too daunting and visuals are the backbone of fashion books. Pick this one up for a great read, resource, and inspiration.
