English Grammar For Dummies [Woods, Geraldine] on desertcart.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. English Grammar For Dummies Review: Thank you Ms. Woods, both insightful and entertaining. A huge help toward my efforts. - This book was a huge help in untangling the maze of English grammar for me. It's not as dry as most grammar books, which helps a lot. However, there were times when the humor obstructed the lesson. Plus, I would've liked more exercises on tearing apart entire random sentences. So I'd gain more confidence on what makes them tick. These are small criticisms against an excellent grammar book. I bought several others first, but they were so clinical and dry; I had trouble getting through them. I've used dummies books for all kinds of self-help. I've read their books on subjects like Microsoft Access and the 3D software Sketchup. I settled on this book when I made an Internet search for a grammar problem. The answer was an excerpt from this book and that's when I bought it. I outlined it which wasn't quick as it took six weeks, but now I have a stronger grasp on grammar. Review: a must have - I am currently taking a class called "advanced syntax an rhetoric" which is as horrifying as it sounds. This book has really helped me understand all aspects of a sentence, from the basics to the advanced. It's an easy read and uses sentence examples that are relatively complex (not too complex...after all it is a book for high school students)which is great, because those simple 5 word examples we always get from other books are completely worthless when you start having to analyze sentences with multiple nouns, verbs, appositives, infinitives, and prepositional phrases. So, in short, I suggest this book for everyone.

Great to learn English for Speakers of Other Languages- You will be smug after reading it...LOL
I do not have very good grammar, as you may notice from my review, but believe me my grammar was a lot worse. The book is easy to read and good reference to keep. I am not a native English speaker but now I know many rules that natives don't know. Thanks to Ms. Woods. Now I have more confident when I speak or write way better than before. Actually, many of the rules make sense, Ms. Woods made them that way, the writer of that book nows how people think and what is the next question that come to your mind; therefore, she answer you questions if you keep reading. I recommended the book to other friends and I recommend it to you too. Fun and easy to read.

Clear and Concise
The attempt to amuse with silly examples wears thin after a while. That accounts for the four stars instead of five. I bought it because it is required for a class I am taking. It explains English grammar clearly and simply. Short chapters and large type make this a 384 page book. It's equivalent to maybe 200 pages of a regular book. We are using it with the workbook, and they complement each other well. If you are really just reviewing your grammar, you might try getting just the workbook, which does have quick explanations at the beginning of each group of worksheets. The workbook also has correct answers for all of the worksheets, with explanations of why those answers are correct. I think I slept through grammar, which was taught somewhere in my K-12 years, because I remember very little of it and had no real knowledge of things like gerunds or dangling participles. For me the book and workbook combo are working nicely.

The Author Of This Book is Interesting
I liked how well the book is written as an in-depth prospect for learning English and for beginners. I disliked that there was pen written notes in the book although when I bought it, it was in "New" condition so I thought there must have been a mistake. I used this book to improve my English and writing skills.

English grammars for dummies
I'm sorry I could not use this product because I don't remember how to find it on my computer. I wish that I had the book itself since I paid for it. That way I could have it tangible in my hands. Nevertheless, I'm sure that this book would've been very helpful to me.

Finally a way to learn English grammar
I have longed for a reference manual/instructional book that would make up for my lack of interest in grammar school. I finally found a great book that explains all the grammar rules. She has flags of items that frequently show up on tests, and detail information of some rules were important and now less so (but this is set off with a warning that it is for English teachers only). She uses example sentences that are correct and some that are incorrect to show the difference and then explains the difference. She points out the three different levels of grammar and has no problem with the familiar, but warns against using it when applying for a job or taking a SAT or ACT test. This is the one book we all need to improve our grammar.

Great for ESL College Students
I'm a college student. English is not my first language and it was difficult for me to understand English grammar. I failed English 201 twice, so I decided to get this book before I took the class a third time. It is so easy to understand. I passed the class this time with a B+. I don't think I could have done it without this fabulous book. If you are struggling with your grammar you should get this book immediately. Specially is English is not your first language.

I love this book. Till now I never really knew how to spot adverbs and adjectives. Excellent work from author. Three cheers to you Geraldine Woods.

Conosco abbastanza bene l'inglese, ma avevo bisogno di una grammatica semplice per far fare un ripasso al nipotino. Ho pensato che questo testo sarebbe stato sufficientemente eccentrico rispetto alle grammatiche tradizionali da non farmi annoiare. Probabilmente è troppo eccentrico, però. Per la spiegazione userò il solito Thomson & Martinet. Rimane comunque un libro interessante perché il punto di vista, in questo caso è ovviamente quello di un madrelingua e offre spunti curiosi.

Excellent book. I was wary of a textbook without "Oxford" or "Cambridge" in the title, but don't worry. This book covers all the bases and it is fun to read as well, something which sets it apart from the crowd. Well done!
