Morakniv Companion Carbon Steel Fixed-Blade Knife with Sheath

I don't know much about knives really, and am no outdoor expert either but I do enjoy backpacking and day hiking. Last year I decided I wanted to try a lightweight fixed blade rather than the typical swiss army knife I'd been taking. I got a carbon steel Frost Mora Clipper. I lost it the other day on a backpacking trip, got home and it had fallen out of the sheath which was attached to my shoulder strap. I'm going to go try to find it as I have a hunch that it fell out when I took my backpack off and flung it over a huge fallen log that I was going to climb over. Wasn't far from trailhead so maybe I'll get lucky. Meanwhile though I ordered and have now received this one, which is labeled as a Morakinov. My Frost Mora was really nice, very sharp and useful for making makeshift tarp pegs etc. This new one is basically the same things but there is one huge improvement. My Frost Mora was loose in its sheath. If you held the sheath upside down and shook it the knife would fall out. Having a knife this sharp not be securely contained in its sheath seems like a bad idea. I put a loop of paracord around the sheath and also used a piece of inner tube to give the sheath a tighter grip on the knife, and it seemed secure but obviously was not secure enough, as evidenced by the fact that it fell out somewhere along the way. This Morakniv is much more secure in its sheath. I can't get it to fall out of the sheath by shaking. I think the handle on the knife is slightly bigger, as I can put it in my Frost Mora's sheath and it is more secure there than the old knife as well. I will still use the paracord backup loop but I doubt this knife will fall out of its sheath in the manner my old one did. I love these knives because they are cheap enough that I am not worried about ruining them. They are the most useful outdoor knives I've had. I'd rather have one sharp knife than a dull swiss army knife even if the army knife has other little doodads on them. Thumbs up! EDITED to ADD: I was able to go back and find my original Frost Clipper knife laying in the woods right where I had suspected. Comparing the Frost knife to this Morakniv one there is little difference. They both weigh 77 grams. They look identical in shape as far as I can tell. The handle of the Frost has a small checkerboard pattern which the Morakniv does not, which makes it feel slightly different in the hand. The main difference to me is the sheath. It is a very slight difference but welcome as the sheath on the Morakniv holds the knife (either knife) much more tightly than the sheath that came with the Frost Clipper. It is slightly heavier, just a few grams more. Also the spine on my Frost was rougher which made it easier to make a spark with the firesteel. The Morakniv has some rough spots on the spine but not as many as on the Frost. I like both knives. I love the Morakniv sheath improvement as I was always a little unhappy with my Frost's.

This is my third Companion and ninth Mora overall. I have piles of knives, some costing over $400. If I had less money and more sense, I would have a few Mora’s and nothing else. They are all the knife that most people will ever need. Mora’s trick is that they have an extensive line and rock bottom prices, you can’t help but collect ‘em all. They are just too cheap, too handy, and too good. I can’t stop buying these things. I mean, $15? I’m not made of stone, people! Eventually I will probably have a Mora in every room, vehicle, and toolbox, and all of them put together are still cheaper than my cheapest Bark River. They cut just as well as a Bark River. No they won’t retain their edge as long as some fancy @$$ CPM whatever-the-f*@$ steel, but they strop back to razor sharp in literally a minute. If it’s been hard used then you may have to invest more time to resuscitate it - like 5 minutes. Mora’s steel, especially the carbon, sharpens up quick, and the scandi grind is the easiest grind to sharpen. You can baton with the Companion in a pinch, though I wouldn’t recommend making a habit of it. It’s not meant as a one tool option for survival in the wilderness. It’s a KNIFE, and the best one you can get for the price, hence their immense popularity. If you do manage to break it, you will be out a whopping 15-20 bucks. The conventional thinking is that carbon steel is tougher than stainless and therefore better suited to outdoorsy woodsy work, but honestly they are so close in performance you’d be hard pressed to tell the difference. If you are looking for one and only one Mora for typical knife tasks, I would suggest the lower maintenance stainless, but be aware of the color options, because buying Mora’s is like eating Pringles. In all likelihood you will wind up with a box of them. My first Mora was a stainless Companion in military green, but when it came time to get a carbon Companion, I was annoyed to find that it is ONLY available in military green. Having two identical looking Companions just makes my OCD go ouchie, so the green stainless stays on the workbench and I got an orange stainless to pair with this green carbon. Got all that? I guess what I’m trying to say is, knife good, click buy.

Not sure how anyone could give this legendary knife a rating under 5 stars. People are really weird. This is my second ever real knife purchase after the Opinel 9 and 10... the Morakniv Companion from Mora, Sweden. Yet another legendary knife brand with a long history; they have been making the same basic knife design for over 130 years. Considered the best value knife ever produced. Almost 400 million are produced every year, making it the most widely distributed knife on the planet. Pretty wild. It's referred to officially as a bushcraft knife but can be used for about anything. Available with a stainless steel or carbon 4.1" blade. I opted for the carbon blade as usual but will also be getting the stainless version for kitchen duties. Really, really cool knife, really, really cool design, very ruggedly built, very comfortable grip. Comes with a waterproof polymer sheath, perfect for Florida's humidity. Also, very sharp right out of the box. This is now my default fixed blade knife for regular outdoor use and abuse. I recommend the Companion.

Fantastic. Light. Durable. Inexpensive. Carbon Steel I like the patina and sharpening compared to stainless as long as not in super damp or water conditions lots. Have to keep blade dried off so won’t rust. Easily does most survival /bushcraft and utility knife tasks. Can baton it though wood. The sheath is nice too. Basic but does the job. Comfortable handle. Durable. Thick blade. I have this and the other up level different model one that has a different grind and more mounting features for sheath. Both are great.

The Mora Knife has my respect and will likely become the new standard for a knife of this size, with the versatility that it offers. This blade came to me, out of the box, sharper than any knife I have previously purchased anywhere. Therefore the amount of items I will be attempting to use this blade on will be in the thousands and it will be tested for capabilities that I would only save for the very best. So far I have been using this blade around the house and in the workshop to perform tasks such as, slicing up chicken and pork for food prep, even taking out bones along the way. I have used it in the workshop to snip zip ties and chop, yes, chop heat shrink tubing, as well as some outdoor activities like de-barking limbs and cutting out notches in branches for uprights. I really haven't found much of a need to pick up another knife for most of these tasks and the blade remains sharp and strong. Having used this knife so often, for the time I have had it makes me happy, because in some cases I have purchased items that are so specialized that I will really only give them a few tasks to handle and they will sit until that time. For this blade, I find that I use it more than it sits and it has even become my EDC (everyday carry) blade of choice. The blade has a nice textured grip, which will not change, when damp or wet. It has a sheath that will not break or split from bumping it around. Finally, the blade is holding up well and judging by its use I likely wont have to sharpen it for some time to come. The carbon steel is a great choice for this blade. I am a 200 lbs. 6 foot tall guy, in gloves I wear a large for size reference and the handle fits perfectly in my hand without any movement when working with the knife. However, I also had my mother take a hold of this knife and even in her hands, because of the shape, she found it very comfortable and her hands are considerably smaller than mine. Wrap-Up: I love the versatility of this blade, its VERY sharp grind, its overall comfortable and safe grip, and yes, its price tag. For the money it is a step above what I have been finding out there, so much that I plan on getting a couple more so I have one permanently kept in the car and I will be getting one for the moms, so she doesn't jack move mine. I gave this knife a 4 star out of 5 rating due to the quality control of the blade when I received it. Though I am not going to go through the hassle of returning it for a new one, I did find that the top grind to the point had excess material that was not removed, which has weakened the point of the blade. I have included images of this on the product page so you can see what I am talking about. SO, if I do get another one of these I will check out the QC and if it comes perfect, like I know it can I will bump this up to a full 5 stars... Knives are a very personal thing. Everyone has different expectations. The Moriknav companion 4.1 inch version is one of my very favorite knives and I have draws full of knives from over the years. This particular version is what I carry on my farm cloths whenever I'm working on the homestead. What do I like about it so much? The knife has a great non-slip handle and the sheath is what really sets it apart. I use it all the time so it's in and out of the sheath constantly. I work in any weather so the plastic doesn't get soaked, and there is a drain hole at the bottom. It's a little tight to pull out when you first get it new, but over time it loosens up just right. Like breaking in a pair of shoes. It comes super sharp with a good point and I can attest it sharpens back up beautifully. A dull knife is of no use to me. I've bought several of this particular model because I think for the price it's a great deal and a great knife. You won't be disapointed.

This is one heck of a knife for $10! Really...it's a steal! I use mine to create feather sticks for my fireplace, and it excels at that task. The blade is sharp, and the handle is very comfortable. As a matter of fact I'm going to buy a second one so I can keep it in the shed for yard duty. Now for those folks who are giving it 1 and 2 star reviews for rust issues and complaining about the unfinished spine please STOP! Here are the facts about this knife. First it is made of CARBON STEEL! It WILL rust if not properly cared for! That means rinsing it off, drying it, and applying your favorite oil before putting it away. You can also force a patina on the blade to help prevent rust. Go on YouTube and search for how to do this. If you can not follow these simple instructions and the blade starts to rust then it is YOUR fault and not the knife! If you need a knife that is rust resistant then buy the stainless steel version for a few dollars more. Now the second fact. Mora has purposely NOT finished the spine of this knife. Got that? It is NOT a manufacturing defect! My guess is they skipped this step in order to make the knife less expensive to manufacture and cheaper to buy which is A GOOD THING. The unfinished spine does not affect the performance of the knife. You might have a harder time creating sparks with a fire steel but that is easily fixed by using a file to square off the spine. If you must have a finished spine then buy the stainless steel version. Ok I got that off my chest. So buy this knife...right now.

My first Mora, I bought from a famous knife store in Sevierville, TN six years ago for $6. I needed one while since my family was going to explore the Smoky Mtns. Bought it because it was the cheapest one that had a decent scabbard, blade length, and grip, but boy, it proved to be more than just an emergency purchase! I've bought at least 12 Moras since then, all of whom I treat as utility tools when I play shade tree mechanic for cutting thin wires, boring holes on plastic shrouds/parts, opening parts packaging or hacking away at shrubs poking my back while I mess around the wheel well. When working on the house, I have it with me since there's always something that needs to be cut. I find it easier to use, control, and keep around than a utility knife. It is also my woodland companion together with a huntsman swiss when I just go into the woods for a couple of hours to forage for mushrooms, cut down, and trim a sapling for a walking stick if I need one, and for slicing the shrooms at the base. Around the campsite? I normally bring tools appropriate for food prep and a Fiskars hatchet and saw for firewood so it's not used as much other than cutting rope, making notches on sticks or poles, or opening a can when the can opener is misplaced. Having no guard on the blade, there is nothing in the way when cutting, trimming and sharpening sticks. One time I used it while fishing. It is always in the pack but only used it once. The fish always gets cleaned at home, that's why. Its value to me is it's a high-quality cutting tool that holds its edge, is easy to sharpen, grippy even when covered with fish slime or car grease, wouldn't bother me if it gets nicked and scratched up, easy to clean, and at a price point that's hard to beat. I have one in the trunk of the 6 vehicles we own, my fishing bag, day pack, and trail bag because of the price. And I know I can beat on its spine with a baton, rock, mallet, pliers, or whatever is handy to achieve my cutting goal at that moment and not be concerned if I break it in the process. I believe I do what I do to it because over time I've owned a mora, it has proven itself remarkably tough and I have learned to trust it. The funny thing is I've never broken one. On the other hand, I own a Cutco hunting knife since 96. High price, high quality with a leather scabbard. That same year, on its first major outing, the tip broke off while opening a can, (canoeing AuSable river in MI). Althought the blade is easy to clean, the leather scabbard is not, impossible to keep dry, and heavy in the pack. And the tip broke off. That knife is now in the basement, with other rarely used camp gear. I've lost several Moras, giving them away to friends who compliment them after they've used them. And two years ago, to a grieving elderly couple by the riverbank who found themselves in need of a cutting tool to cut open the thick plastic bag holding the ashes of their loved one taken by COVID. That mora is the only one I lost that was followed by group prayer.

Es la versión antigua del military companion, el lomo es un poco más fino que los actuales. Lo cual personalmente considero una ventaja porque tiene mejor corte. Es de acero al carbono, lo cual es otra ventaja aun mayor porque se afila de miedo con cualquier cosa que tengas a mano. Y es enterizo, así que aguanta muchísimo trote. La funda es muy simplona, pero cumple con su función y no retiene humedad, lo que ayuda a evitar que la hoja se ennegrezca. Como apunte decir que es el tercer cuchillo mora que tengo, siendo los dos anteriores variaciones de este modelo en acero inoxidable. Siempre me han funcionado mejor que otros cuchillos con materiales más elaborados y más caros. Porque su secreto radica en que al ser tan convencional, o clásico que dirían algunos, es fácil tenerlo siempre a punto y utilizarlo en cualquier situación.

Finalmente mi sono deciso PRESO coltello che non può mancare nell'attrezzatura di chiunque ama immergersi nella natura escursionisti pescatori cacciatori .......mangiatori (affetta i salamini che è un piacere ) articolo veramente valido lama affilatissima impugnatura comodissima e saldissima anche se bagnata . Particolarmente utile per lavorare ed intagliare il legno creare trucioli per fuoco ecc...ovviamente non per lavori troppo pesanti anche se con un poco di abilità ,pratica e buon senso potrebbe offrire più di quanto ci si possa aspettare .La lama oltre ad essere molto tagliente è molto ben rifinita e l'aspetto finale ci offre un coltello bello pratico ( anche per la pulizia P.S. ovviamente con i limiti della lama al carbonio ) e funzionale ( che abbinato al suo fodero molto resistente e ben studiato sia per il serraggio in sicurezza del coltello che per la possibilità di trasportarlo e agganciarlo in diversi modi ) ad un prezzo veramente ottimo . COLTELLO OUTDOOR CONSIGLIATISSIMO P.S dopo un intensivo utilizzo sul campo vorrei esprimere un mio giudizio sulle caratteristiche della lama senza nulla togliere a quanto scritto nella recensione rimane comunque un ottimo coltello tuttofare ma .... le caratteristiche della lama al carbonio qualche problemino lo creano sopratutto a chi ama avere il coltello sempre in ordine perfetto l'ossidazione o meglio gli aloni che si creano sono molto evidenti ed effettivamente tagliando alimenti troppo acidi oltre a macchiarsi rilascia un odore particolare ( ferroso) quindi io personalmente ne ho comprato un altro con lama inox da utilizzare sopratutto per gli alimenti ( ma va bene anche per tutto il resto) questo al carbonio lo tengo esclusivamente come coltello da lavoro (assolutamente valido) e per ovviare al problema dell'ossidazione dopo ogni uscita ed utilizzo lo pulisco con una pasta lucidante e lo lubrifico con qualche goccia di olio per armi. RIMANE COMUNQUE UN OTTIMO ARTICOLO
