These spindle rods are designed to be used with pressure mounted gates only. Pressure mounted gates are installed by tightening the spindle rods against the surrounding walls and objects, creating tension that holds the gate securely in place. By contrast, hardware mounted gates are installed by screwing manufacturer-provided hardware into the walls, then connecting the gate. If you are not sure which size will fit your pressure mounted gate, you can measure the holes that the spindle rods go into to determine the correct size yourself. An M8 screw's true diameter will measure slightly less than 8mm, so will fit nicely into an 8-9mm hole.
