One Shot is All You Need.
I like this movie since I grew up in Pennsylvania and could vicariously follow this close group of friends who worked hard, drank hard, and played hard. Just before going to Vietnam their good friend gets married in a big wedding bash, and the characters are forever cemented into your memory. During the wedding, a ceremony takes place whereby the bride and groom sip from a double cup of wine. If any of the wine is spilled, it's considered bad luck. Exactly two drops are spilled, and John Savage's character loses both legs in Vietnam. After the wedding, the group heads to a deer hunting trip, where Deniro explains the logic behind "one shot." That is all you need to kill a deer. This becomes the theme of the movie, revolving around their experiences being captured in Vietnam, were the enemy plays Russian Roulette with the captured American prisoners for money. The war leaves a huge mark on the friends, as they lose one of their own, who succumbs to a mental breakdown, possibly due to his experiences being captured by the enemy. Throughout the movie, there are subtle nuances between Deniro and Street, as they start to bootstrap a a relationship, that at times is awkward, but eventually starts moving. I won't spoil the movie, but we have themes of friendship, love, war, unbelievable mental torture, and survival, all wrapped up in the mountains of Washington state, where the deer is the symbol of honor and courage, and one's ability to let the trophy buck go, and move ahead with life. An excellent movie, at times a little long, but gets the main point across.
