Will it work for instant hot water only?

No. It will work for either hot or cold, filtered or unfiltered water.

Is “brown” nickel a typo for brushed nickel or something else?

I ordered the rubbed bronze....its a nice rubbed bronze....nice faucet...looks good with my kitchen moen faucet in same bronz.......works great. worth while......... but if it says "brown"....its a rubbed bronze finish

My connection is 1/4" metal rather than plastic. Will this work?
