nice sleek practical product
I like that this Emerson CD/am fm radio can be listened to both by phones privately and aloud with the option of the chord it comes with that plugs in an electric socket. It can can also be played via batteries. It is sleek, non cumbersome and easy to carry. The radio comes in handy when I cannot get a ball game on tv wishing to find out the score. CD player part allows to go from one track to another, yet does not have numbers to press to get to the exact song. For any player I would recommend caution with the go to the next song button meaning be gentle with and not too fast. No trouble with this product. I had a Hello Kitty boom box where the go to the the next track feature died shortly after getting the product.I have not attempted the memory feature yet. This is the 2nd Emerson Portable Radio CD Player I have gotten. The 1st one is used upstairs and then I got one for the downstairs of my home.I am finding that it plays all my CDs including one put together recently by an orchestra director to listen to for an upcoming playing event.

Broke after one year
This is a neat CD player/AM-FM receiver. Slim, lightweight, decent sound. You can stand it up on a shelf and it is not awkward like Discmans. Battery/AC operation made it versatile. The hinge that closed in the CD opened sedately --- nice! Unfortunately, the machine is not ruggedly built. The CD player unit in my machine stopped working without warning after about one year of average use. I am still mystified. The radio still works well, though, although it was for the combination that I bought the unit.

Compact, but not functional
This one did not work right out of the box for me. The radio was functional, but the CD player was completely non-functional. It would give a weak spin, then give up. Obviously, you might be lucky and get a version that works, but it says something about the workmanship. The unit is light and compact and runs off battery or extension cord, which is nice, though it takes a ton of large batteries. The radio is analog, and it didn't seem to pick up great signal when I was running it in my kitchen despite having the antenna fully extended. I think the analog dial would be a little annoying in this day and age. The unit cheap and plastic-y looking.

Emerson is the best
I have had a few CD player/Radio type portable rigs in the past 10 years, and Emerson is by far the winner in low priced portable audio equipment.I am using the PD5098 as a learning tool to play guitar track CD's.The digital read out is not as easy to see as the Emerson PD6810, but at 2/3 the price is still OK, and it takes up far less room. This unit is smaller than the PD6810 and PD6548BL.The PD5098 is a great performer and I have not witnessed any CD skipping as reported by other reviewers; if the unit starts having problems after a couple of years I will throw it away and order another. This does not bother me, but what does, is having to do this with audio equipment costing $50.00 to $100.00 or more.It has one speaker instead of two, but actually reaches a higher volume than the 6810 but is not stereo (obviously). The CD door flops down and CD's are installed by pressing onto the rubber nub.I do not use batteries, so cannot comment on this. Both the 5098 and 6810 are acceptable units and everything works on them unlike the Jwin and RCA junk I have purchased which is now sitting in storage, or has been dismantled for parts and thrown away.I would like to make a comment about some of the other reviewers that obviously expect way to much from a $27.00 (which includes shipping) unit. WITH EXPECTATIONS LIKE THIS, YOU WILL BE DISAPPOINTED FOR THE REST OF YOUR LIVES.

A pleasant little portable picnic player
Always wanted a simple compact portable CD player with built-in speaker. Saw this one being demonstrated on YouTube and found it was still being made so I bought one off Amazon. This just about fills the bill for anyone needing less than a full-on boombox. Attractive styling and reasonably small footprint that bring to mind the old-skool beach radios I remember from growing up in the 70s/80s. Love the clear blue panel that lets you watch the CD play. This is a portable unit that runs on batteries or AC. Amazingly this unit has the power transformer built in - thought everything ran off a wall wart nowadays. There's no DC jack so you wouldn't be able to power this from a car or camper without an AC inverter. Stock up on C-cells.Plays commercial and home-made CDs equally well - BTW one of the first albums I played was the soundtrack to Clockwork Orange - hence the title of this review. This does not play CDs with MP3s burned to them and the Amazon product description is wrong in that it does not save songs to memory - you can only program tracks on the CD you're playing and that's erased once you open the CD door, switch to the radio or turn off the machine.Since this is basically a portable picnic machine for playing your 'fuzzy warbles' sound is OK but gets fairly distorted at full volume - half-volume is about as high as you'd want to play it for most CDs. No tone, treble or bass controls. This is a monaural player - even the headphone jack is mono. Should you feel like using standard stereo headphones, you will hear audio through both channels. Sound will be of equal quality.Should note that this is so basic a CD player that there are no anti-skip or oversampling features so you should put it down when actually using it. Hitting the machine has an effect, shaking or swinging it around doesn't seem to as much. Damaged CDs won't necessarily play well if at all.Other reviewers have noted this unit has a short lifespan. Since I just got mine today, I can't confirm or deny this. For less than $30 bucks on Amazon, it's a good buy even if I only get a summer's use out of it. I hope Emerson keeps making this.
