Hdmi board died after about 5 mins, customer service clueless
I bought this pre pro secure in the knowledge that it was a solid performer. It was getting a little long in the tooth but the feature set was good and the AV8801 was still just that little bit out of reach.Anyway , yesterday the ups guy turns up with my big box of joy. Nicely packed and secured and I took my time with the setup via xlrs and dual subs in a 9.2 configuration with 2 power amps.Audissey calibration made no test tone outputs, rechecked everything and no success. Tried a hdmi in and spun a blue ray, picture but no sound and no speaker icons on the display. Usb music played as did Pandora. Basically this is the same problem that afflicted the nr 817 series. I ran a usb firmware update, only because the network update kept failing.Today I talked to onkyo. The support rep knew nothing about this model and I had a distinct feeling that a cleaner had heard the phone ringing and picked up, at least I hope that's what happened because this guy know nothing about hifi or indeed even connector types.I had steered away from Onkyo because of the horror stories about hdmi and terrible customer service, sadly its all true. Run a mile from Onkyo, the customer service rep could not have been less interested in solving or at least troubleshooting the issue.Anyway it was indeed the hdmi board, it could not hold a signal. Not much of a result for a 2500 dollar processor. Also as a side note, the gui is awful and slow it would have probably went back even of it had worked.

onkyo sc5509
I did not buy this unit from amazon but I got to hear it and I did not care for the sound but a friend bought one and brought it to my house so we hooked it up and this one was the best I have heard so far and that includes McIntosh Marantz Yamaha and others for the first time I can hear the dialogue clear as can be the auto set up is greate but what realy sold me was the dolby volume setting at a wisper or at thx seting the sound is spectacular and the audyssey eq works very well also but I prefer the dolby volume more so but on dts 5.1 audyssey works a little better then dolby volume audyssey works well on dolby 5.1 but dolby volume works the best on dolby 5.1 as many of you know onkyo runs hot so I bought a nice dual fan 120mm to put on top of my 5509 plugs rite into the usb port on back of unit after doing the auto set up I decided to try setting audio levels with my sound level meter I like the auto set up better souds better but I could not get back to my auto settings so I called onkyo and I told the very nice lady my problems and she told me to do the auto set up then she told me how to put it in memory and also how to recall the auto settings if I decide to make level changes with my level metter and the music on the internet was a big surprise it realy sounds much better then I have ever heard it befor I don't know what onkyo did but they sure made this unit sound as good as McIntosh and in some ways better and I own McIntosh and use it daily so if your looking for pream prosser I don't think you can do any better then this model sc5509 regardless of price and oh yes my oppo blu ray bp103 sounds great ted

Stay away from Onkyo
Don't purchase a Onkyo, have sent the unit in for repairs 3 times on warrenty. Lasted 4 months yes I believe the hmdi- board went bad again this time out of warrenty. It has been in the shop longer than it has been working. I will never buy Onkyo again.

Very suprised
Very suprised with the audio quality. Coming from Theata digital processor I was expecting to have to "tweek" my way back to the quality level I expect. No need to worry, it best what I had especially when combined with Audassy pro 32. Very pleased.

sad to say this is my second Onkyo with a HTMI board that died. I assumed that Onkyo would solve their HTMI problems with all the trouble that Onkyo had (and I had) with the TxNR 5008. When I had the TxNR 5008 HTMI board repaired, there was only one Onkyo service center in California....Orange county.I'm not sure I'm going to bother getting the PR-SC5509 repaired. Just checked google: Onkyo now has a service center in Northern CA....Sacramento, I might get the HTMI fixed on my PR-SC5509... or not. I am not happy with Onkyo.
