I couldn't put this book down. From the first page I was instantly sucked into Traci's world. I first saw Traci on Oprah last year, and felt compelled to get her book. While reading her life story, I was riverted by it. I couldn't put it down. because of Traci's honesty and finally having the courage to speak out about the dreadful, unfortunate things that happened with her, I feel like I have a sense of who she is as a person and I have a lot of respect for her. Luckily she was able to get out and change her life. Traci's a wonderful actress to watch. She played the perfect, sexy vampire in 'Blade', and was very memorable in it. She's a talented singer too. I think like anybody, before I read her book, I only knew that she used to be into porn. I didn't know any of the struggles that she went through, the ugliness of some people in this world that only are interested in exploiting people/young girls. And I'm glad that I have the oppornuity to have my eyes opened. I contragulate her for her strength to get through her pain and all the crap she went through to get out of the business and become a legitement actress and singer and healthy woman. There are always going to be people that are going to slam her for her past and most people won't be able to let her forget it, if you are one of these people than maybe this book isn't for you. But if your a fan or someone that may of had/have a similar situation, then I think that one should definitely read this book. It may even help you. This is a touching, eye opening read. I don't think Traci would want anyone to feel sorry for-that's not why she wrote this, it's to set her story straight, after so many years of people lying about her. 5 out of 5. A great read. Review: Easy read. A woman's quest for redemption and strive for happiness.. - Being the same age as Traci, I was familiar with her "taboo work" as a teen, although, I too, did not realize that she was soo young when most of her xxx films were made. The 80's big hair, and over-use of make-up and lip gloss added years to her sexy, Lolita appearance. She was hot and rather energetic in her oral endeavors, but, in retrospect, this saddens me as she states that she rarely derived any plesure from this work. I, like most men of the day, enjoyed and appreciated her gusto. I too was born poor, grew up with my Mom, and from an abusive family, but, being a guy; it was different-although I could not wait to exit my house at 16. Never got involved in porn, but alcohol and drugs to be sure. Sad how we attempt to be "grown" and hit rock bottom eventually; normally due to our youth, and the exploitation of it. I admire that Traci set goals, and cleaned up her drug addiction very early on. I know personally, that is not an easy thing to do. This auto-bio is an easy and fast moving read. Nothing highly unusual is divulged here. She really seems to have a good head on her shoulders. Much of her post porn life seems quite mundane, and normal; yet she always reached to elevate herself and to branch out into new endeavors, i.e.: music, modeling, mainstream films, tv and d.j.'ing. Kudos! Most of us would never have the balls to venture into dark unknowns like that! Would love to meet her one day, as a fan and friends. For me, she has a tell it like it is style, and exudes credibility. She took her lumps and rolled with the punches, literally. The awesome deal I got on this well kept hardcover made it a no-brainer for purchase. Seller was great. Overall, VERY happy with the book, and terms to obtain it. Brave Baring Of Her Soul
Underneath It All by Traci Lords is an honest and soul baring account on how the author’s childhood shaped her adult years. She charts her early life as a young girl in the Midwest who naturally has dreams of a better life and is greatly influenced to want more as a result of living part of her life near a university in Ohio. There are a wide range of information pieces that she recalls in her memoir (such as how her biological parents met. the heart-wrenching rape incident that she suffered as a child, how she first came into the racier side of modeling, the roles that both her biological mother and stepfather played in her life). She also creatively tied in her career progression with her love life as she recalled the men who had an influence in some of her professional projects. One of my favorite parts of the book was when she recalled her joy at being cast in the Cry-Baby movie and being cast alongside multiple famous celebrities attached to the film. I can easily understand how the traumatic rape experiences she suffered in her early years indirectly contributed towards her world view on how her own sensuality and life operated. Without providing too many book spoilers from Traci Lord’s book, I say this because I myself was traumatized from a rape experience inflicted on me around the age of 5-6 years old orchestrated by my late biological mother for the benefit of who was either one of her lovers and/or clients (I’m not sure because my late adoptive mother (around the time I was 11-13 years old) admitted to me that my late biological mother worked as a prostitute). Anyhow, Lords provides subtle hints on how what happened to her indirectly contributed to the way she felt about the areas of love and sensuality and her brave journey towards seeking therapy. There is so much more in this book written by a woman who poured much of her artistic soul towards telling an honest and unadulterated story.

A fantastic and soul stirring read. Do not underestimate it as the autobiography of a mere porn star. It is, in fact the journey of a person from innocence to experience . It tells you how adults spoil the life and ambitions of innocent girl children. By the time you finish reading this book you find yourself much more sympathetic to the victims of pornography. It gives you a lot of insights into the mind of the women who are branded as 'porn stars. They too are human beings with the greatest and highest potential for growth and 'self-actualization', the kind Abraham Maslow speaks of. The book is not a justification of the ways and life styles of porn stars. It tells you what is 'underneath it all', The drudgery, the inhumanity, the shame, the agony, the sheer helplessness etc behind the glittering facade of PORN. Do read this book. Expand your vision and stay blessed in life.

Early on I had very negative thoughts about Traci as she just seemed unable to stop repeatedly making poor choices ie drinking, drugs etc. Fortunately, for me, I kept reading (yes, I had actually closed the book due to the absurdity of her actions) and, taken through her truly amazing journey of learning, enduring seeming endless roadblocks in her path to overcoming all of it and teaching me NOT to make judgements without the COMPLETE story.
