A Timeless and Inspiring Story
Nina Nolan's kids' biography of the great Gospel singer is needed now more than ever -- and not only for the obvious purpose of broadening the minds of young children. For, in their brief telling of Mehalia Jackson's story, Ms. Nolan and the book's talented illustrator highlight some essential life lessons that we can all benefit from: the importance of persevering in the face of adversity, the power of song, celebration and unconditional love, and the fact that even someone as accomplished as the Reverend Martin Luther King, Jr., can use an occasional nudge from a friend. And how will you contribute to the world -- by being someone who nudges or someone who is open to suggestion? Or, like Mehalia, both?

Wonderful gift with many life lessons for your kids
This is my third purchase of this great book for gifts to the kiddos in my life. Although I've not met the author, in a round about way, I've been able to get her to autograph the books which she is happily willing to do. My only wish is that she and the illustrator would write more books like this . After reading the book to my grandson, I let him see utube videos of Mahalia singing various songs. The look and wonderment on his face was priceless!

A great gift to inspire children
Walking with Kings and Queens, is a great entry to the life of this amazing lady who inspired many. I have given away this book, as her life story teaches to focus on the positive things and people around you, while learning from the hard lesson's of life. I first read Nina's children's book and then dove in deeper to learn more about Mahalia's life. I hope her life story inspires you and your children as well as well

Beautiful illustrations, musically written!
This book tells the story of Mahalia Jackson, gospel singer who lived an extraordinary life and had an impact on the Civil Rights Movement, alongside Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. (she also had an impact on his “I have a dream” speech). The illustrations are gorgeous and the story is almost musical in the way it’s written. I didn’t know much about Mahalia before but my kids and I all loved the book. It’s both educational, inspiring, and beautiful!

Inspirational Biography
Nina Nolan paints a colorful picture of Mahalia Jackson that is complemented by John Holyfield’s wonderful illustrations. The folksy, lilting text engages the reader in an overview of the gospel singer's life. It is a true story about overcoming obstacles, persevering, and staying true to one’s beliefs. Truly inspiring. I can't wait to share it with my young grandson.

A True Queen!
Born in 1911, legendary gospel singer Mahalia Jackson grew up living in a “shotgun shack” so close to the train tracks. Whenever trains passed by her house would shake so much. In fourth grade, Mahalia had to leave school to care for her baby cousins. Then in the eighth grade she dropped out of school again and took on odd jobs to earn money. Despite facing many hardships throughout her life, Mahalia still persisted and went on to become one of the best Black female gospel singers of all time until her death in 1972 from heart failure and diabetes complications. She held onto the words her aunt Bell used to tell her: “One day you’ll walk with kings and queens.” This is such a beautifully written and illustrated picture book for kids who want to learn more about Mahalia Jackson’s life. Perfect for Common Core and kids ages 4-8 and up as it’s not too wordy. My kids and I enjoyed learning more about Mahalia Jackson from her childhood to adulthood. This book inspired me to go back and listen to some of Jackson’s popular gospel songs – what a beautiful voice she had! Check this one out for Black History Month, Women’s History Month or anytime of the year.
