A True Lifesaver for Small Herbivores — Worth Having on Hand
Oxbow Critical Care is one of those products I sincerely believe every rabbit, guinea pig, or small herbivore owner should keep in their emergency kit. When an animal isn’t eating on their own due to GI stasis, dental issues, illness, or post-surgical recovery, this can quite literally be a lifesaving product. The powder mixes easily with warm water to your desired consistency and works well for syringe feeding or bowl feeding. I appreciate that it’s timothy hay–based with essential vitamins and minerals, so it supports gut health while providing complete nutrition during recovery. The fiber content is exactly what you want when supporting a compromised digestive system. Palatability is also a big win here — even picky animals tend to accept it far better than expected, especially when warmed slightly or mixed to a smooth consistency. The resealable packaging helps keep it fresh, which is important since you may not use it daily. This is not meant to replace regular feeding long-term, but as a recovery or emergency support food, it’s unmatched. I’ve seen firsthand how valuable it is when time matters and an animal needs nutrition immediately Pros: High-quality, vet-recommended formula, easy to mix and syringe feed, supports digestive health, very appetizing to most small animals, essential to have on hand for emergencies, smells like a tropical green smoothie, large portions for the price, and varying hardness/thickness depending on the animals preference, and so much more! Cons: Should be fed as a directed and not as a daily food replacement, and hard to find in stock at times. Overall, Oxbow Critical Care absolutely earns its reputation. If you care for rabbits, guinea pigs, chinchillas, or other herbivores, this is a must-have product you’ll be grateful to have when you need it most. Highly recommended. 🐰💚

The best product for emergencies
This is a miracle product, it saved my rabbit's life, I can not sing the praises of this product enough, I always recommend it to people who have small animals. I will always buy this and keep it in my emergency basket, one of my rabbits has a tendency to forget to drink water and as a result she becomes really lethargic. Every time it scares me, and every time I quickly whip this product out and use it on her. It's very simple to use, comes with straight forward instructions that are very easy to follow when your mind is all frantic and flustered. You just combine one of the packets with some water, and use a baby syringe to feed it to your rabbit. If your rabbit is very sick and is at the point that they will refuse food, you will have to force-feed this to them, and that is a little bit difficult, but It's something you have to do. It will save your rabbits' life. During the time I was feeding my sick rabbit, her cage mate came over and greedily licked the food off her chin. Rabbits clearly like the taste of this lol!

Rabbit care & recovery
Many bunnies can experience stress, illness or dental problems that make eating difficult and this Critical care offers a gentle, easy to administer solution to keep them nourished for faster recovery. I keep these in stock since I have multiple bunnies. It's part of my emergency kit. Open pouch, scoop up the powder and mix with water. It's that easy. For picky eaters you can also administer this thru a syringe. They have a variety of flavors, mine prefer the apple and banana. When I open the pouch I can tell it's fresh because of its sweet smell. The bunnies go bananas over it and can't wait to devour it. It's a good value when buying in bulk.

Life saver to have on hand
This product has saved my bunnies lives on more than one occasion. Great ingredients and my bunny loves it when eating on her own. When in GI stasis it waters down nicely and can be pushed through a syringe. Gets my bunnies digestion moving again.

YES! It’s for Box Turtles too
I recommend Critical Care Herbivore for Box Turtles. My boxy was not eating and lethargic so I had to make a decision. With no Vets who specialize in Reptiles I took a chance and ordered this for him. Same day shipping was delivered. I mixed Critical Care with warm water in a small bowl, once the mixture was liquified. I used a syringe to gently squeeze small amounts in the side of his mouth. The toughest part was getting him to open his mouth. I saw on YouTube that if you tickle their hind parts and /or tap his nose area gently it gets them to open their mouth enough for the syringe to enter. It’s not easy but worth it also Wear gloves and if you have someone to help, it’s so worth it. I only myself but we got it done. So for several days this was our Critical Care routine. You have to be patient with them and remember that they don’t feel well so feeding them is stressful. Poor kid, he eventually started feeling better in a few days. But I continued this until he started eating on his own. Wax worms are his favorite. So for anyone who is curious about this formula of Critical Care. I highly recommend it for Box Turtles! Thank You Oxbow

Helped out in a pinch
I picked this up for my little guy when he stopped eating on his own, and it honestly made a huge difference. The mix is easy to prepare, and it smells way better than most recovery foods I have tried. He took to the apple banana flavor pretty fast, which was a big relief because getting a sick pet to eat can feel like a battle. It also feels good knowing it is a vet trusted formula made in the USA. What I liked most is how steady his energy came back once he was on it for a day or two. It is not magic, but it really helps when your pet needs nutrition fast and cannot get it from normal food. The texture blends smooth so it goes through a syringe without clogging, which saves a lot of stress. If you have a rabbit or guinea pig that needs extra support, this is one of those products that actually earns its place in your pet kit.

The best #1 recommendations 100%worth it
I have a 3 month old rabbit and he loves this .. he got sick and with this care herbivore and his fluids he was back to having his bowl movements and active and it’s safe and so soft for them to chew the thickness depends on how thick you want it if you don’t want it as thick just add more water but definitely preference number one to go to and it’s very fresh food. They love that natural apple and banana flavor as soon as he smells it he comes running up to me. Will definitely recommend us for any rabbit or guinea pig or turtle very good high fiber ingredients. My number one thing to go to Oxbow. There is a video of him eating and took His meds and my honey is back to normal again thanks to oxbow 🙌🙌🙌💯💯💯

This may save your pet's life, help her get well, and/or help her stay well.
Disclaimer: I am not a vet and you should always consult your vet when you have--or even before--you have a problem. I have had guinea pigs for the past 20+ years and also had a pair of rabbits for 11 of those. This is a core item in my pet emergency kit. As other reviewers have explained, some small animals stop eating when they are ill and you may need to force them to eat in order for them to recover. Or, a small animal may be eating, but may need a little help regaining weight after an illness or surgery. Or maybe you have a guinea pig or rabbit with broken incisors (which will grow back) or permanently removed incisors. These are common situations in which your vet may recommend Critical Care. Your vet will know how much your pet should have, and how often. I have used both this and the fine grind version. The fine grind is easier to syringe feed, but you *can* syringe feed with this variety *if* you have a larger syringe with a larger opening (such as a 10 CC). I confess I have blasted myself (and the walls, and the floor...) many times with coarse grind out of a syringe due to a clog, so if you have to do a lot of syringe feeding, maybe try the fine grind first. (Incidentally, 1cc and 10cc syringes--without needles, of course--are also an important part of a small animal emergency kit.) Currently, I am mixing this up to a drier, chunkier consistency for my elderly guinea pig as a supplement for weight maintenance--and don't tell him, but I also sneak in his liquid glucosamine. He loves it and will gobble it up on his own (not all of them do, though). He still eats his hay, pellets and veggies, so it's like a side dish or a treat. I occasionally use "mix-ins," including a little orange juice or a pinch of dry unflavored oatmeal. But again, it's important that you check with your vet before altering your pet's diet.

Super.

Looks ok but piggies don’t like it
Seems fine, but my poorly piggy does not like either flavour of this critical care feed. Otherwise, seems to be easy to mix and you can form whatever consistency required.
