Review: End of an Era - Even if you don't know of Nightwish watch this and enjoy. The band are as always magnificent. This is of course Tarja's last show with the band ,only she doesn't know it and they do,and there's a few moments throughout you can see they feel that. However amazing concert, fabulous performances from everyone as always. High Hope cover is to die for,had to repeat many times.Marko's voice,Emmpu 's guitar here,Tuomas and Jukka too, the boys at their best. Phantom was again amazing, Tara and Marko together just beautiful, again repeat. Too many moments.. A special moment in time that we never saw them perform with the same line up again. Please buy this!!
For people who had heard of the band but never heard anything by them I implore you to buy this DVD. This was a band at the top of its game that everything came together on one special night - performances - unity so it appeared - an unsurpassed stage production in sound and singer - only for them to sack their unique focal and vocal point two hours after the gig!! To say they will never attain these heights again is perhaps rash but "Once" ( pun intended ) seen never forgotten and leaves wanting you to watch it again and again. As talented as the replacement singer is she and the band secretly know that the songs will never be performed like this again, hopefully until the necessary re-union if at all hatchets can be buried and not into each others heads!!

Headbangers and Beauty
This is a great DVD for those of you who like heavy metal with a quality opera like voice thrown in for good measure, and one of the most beautiful singers out there ... its available if you google / search you tube , but owning the DVD is just so much better, as you can back it up to your laptop , stick your headphones on and enjoy ... worth finding and bouncing along with the lyrics .. although that can take some mastering... she has a way with words that Tarja .... great value and keep on rocking.. ;]

Bye bye beautiful, and thanks for the memories.
Tarja's final show with Nightwish, and what a show. Every song is a highlight, delivered in true Nightwish style. It is apparent though, that the guys knew what was to come at the end of the show. They seemed very ill at ease, but in no way was their delivery diminished. A must for any Nightwish fan, old and new.

Rock on!
This was perfect! I LOVE the concert, sound was brilliant, brilliant performance. One thing maybe to say was although I got a full screen on my TV I had a wide black border around the PC screen when I watched it on PC. Maybe just me but it reduced the viewing size by a good twenty percent at least.

Nightwish are a great band that there is no doubt
What a truly magnificent DVD . Tarja on fire , but you can feel the atmosphere in the band is not right . Nightwish are a great band that there is no doubt , and the music wins over .

Bravo!!!!!!
I usually hate live CDs and/or video concerts. I generally avoid them like the plague. Why? Usually the manipulations and complexities of the studio cannot be recreated live. Vocalists, for example, tend to scream instead of sing. They simply don't have the strength to project their voice above the instrumentals. The studio can fix that, but on stage their limitations are exposed for all to hear. "Nightwish: End of An Era" is a huge exception to the above. The instrumentals are as true to their studio versions as one can get live. Despite the orchestral and choir parts being recordings of what was on the albums, the live band meshed seamlessly with them. Marco Hietala's vocal parts were well done. For a metalhead, Marco is a good singer. Finally, there is the incomparable Tarja Turunen. Tarja's vocals soar above the power metal and orchestral arrangements. Not surprising. A classical soloist is trained to sing live. (See my review of the album "Once" where I briefly detail her vocal training). In fact, there are versions of songs on this video that I prefer over the studio. For example, her vocals seem 'restrained' on 'Bless The Child' and 'Ever Dream' off of their 2002 album "Century Child". Her live renditions of these two songs in particular are dynamic and passionate. This concert is a joy to watch and hear. But, it is tempered by a certain amount of sadness knowing that this was Tarja's final performance with Nightwish. I bought the audio CD before I bought the Blu-ray. It is one thing to hear "End of an Era"; the experience of hearing and seeing it takes it to a whole other level. CRANK IT UP!!!!

Wish I Had an Angel

Great concert
There are some technical issues with the DVD which others have remarked on. I would add to those that subtitles of the lyrics would have been welcome. This is a truly emotional concert on many levels. It was the last time that Tarja Turunen performed as lead singer with Nightwish. The band fired her after that concert.... She had previously asked to quit after one more album. It is the end of the "opera metal" era for this band. Never again would these songs be performed with the same grandeur, or as moving, as they were then, and many of them (especially Ever Dream) are completely beyond the ability of Tarja's eventual replacement (Annette Olzon). The concert is well organized, with large numbers of contrasts brought into it. Some songs are extremely melodic (Sleeping Sun) and others are downright noisy (Siren, Slaying the Dreamer). In between we are treated to performances of Native American John Two-Hawks both with (Creek Mary's Blood) and without (Stone People) the band. Somehow the chanting and Native American flute music does not get out of place among the metal that surrounds it and sometimes blends with it. The music itself is completely unique. There is nothing like it around today. Great metal and symphonic sounds paired with a great, almost operetic voice. Additionally the lyrics are full of references to Classical Greece, from "Save a penny for the ferryman" as the refrain in "Planet Hell" to the theme of Siren which juxtaposes the imagery of Odysseus tied to the mast with astrological symbolism. Tuomas's talent as a poet and a songwriter shines forth as truly as Tarja's voice. Highly recommended even for non-metal fans.
