Have been using Stealth Cam cameras since they first became available, many years ago. The G42 is a quality camera (I believe released in 2000) and certainly far removed from some of the earlier models. Small, compact, well made camera. Picture resolution excellent and no issues during first month in the field. Sounds like battery life will be much longer than in the past, though I use external battery packs (with solar chargers) on all of my cameras. That raises the one con in my mind. The face screen completely shuts off after setup and it appears that the camera needs to be shut off and turned back on to see how many pictures are on the disk. I'm certain that this is a battery saver, but is somewhat inconvenient. Liked the camera enough though, that I promptly purchased two more. My cameras remain in the field 24/7 for as long as they function. Will provide and update in a year or so! Only wish that not everyone is only making IR models these days. The flash is nice for quality nighttime pictures and has no detectable effect on animals coming to a food source. This camera would be incredible for me, if it was flash!!This is an update at the nine month point. Have multiple G42s in the field, both in the heat of Texas and the NE weather of Pennsylvania. All have worked flawlessly and I have purchased more. The most remarkable points in these new cameras by Stealthcam are the reliability and the battery savings. With the external battery packs and solar chargers it appears that I can go for months without a battery change out. We were always changing out batteries frequently, during the cold winter months in the NE. We went entirely through last winter and now well into the Spring without changing a battery!UPDATE: These cameras have been in the field 24/7 for over two years now and have worked flawlessly. I have not had a single failure and have about a dozen of these cameras. I average about 60,000 pictures per camera, per year (one minute recycling tine), so these cameras have been excellent. I've been so impressed that I've just upgraded my review to five stars. Just ordered two more today at Amazon sale price to keep in reserve. Great camera!! Now if they would only make a similar model with flash, so that I could get great, night time pictures.Update (2018): These cameras have now been in the field 24/7/365 for over four years and I have not had a single failure. Two cameras in PA were ripped off the trees to which they were mounted, by interested black bear, but each were placed back up and worked just fine. Here in Texas the mounting strap broke after being out in the sun for four years, but the camera is fine. Have 8 cameras in reserve but haven't needed any of them. Very solid product.Update (2019): These cameras have been in the field 24/7/365 for over fifteen years (averaging 100,000+ pictures per camera, per year) and there have been no failures. Superb trail camera.Update (March 2020): Read above as all still accurate. These cameras have been in the Texas heat and Pennsylvania cold for years 24/7/365. Not a single failure and hundreds of thousands pictures per camera. I have many cameras out in the field and many in reserve which I have never had to use. For me a definite 5 star camera.

We've never used a trail cam before, we have a couple of small pan and zoom cameras around but I wanted something that we could easily move around. I wasn't quite sure I wanted to pay over $120 for a camera either, so after about a week of research we decided to give this camera a try. Turns out this works great and it is so simple to use, I'm very glad we got this one instead of a cheaper camera.I also bought two SanDisk Ultra 32 GB Class 10 HDSC memory cards to go along with the camera. I just swap out a 'used' card with an empty one instead of bringing the camera inside. You can also use a USB cable and hook the camera up directly to a PC to transfer or delete pictures and videos. 8 AA batteries are required (not included) to operate.We've been using this as a security camera outside. I love that no lights at all show, even when it's taking a picture! We have walked past this camera many times forgetting it was there only to find a few embarrassing 'money shots' of ourselves later on while scrolling through the SD card. :/The pictures and videos do come out better in the daytime than they do at night, but the night vision is still clear enough to see what is going on outside in the dark, which is what we were looking for. Some of the video will get washed out if something is too close so I try to keep the camera back a bit farther from the area I want it to monitor and it does do better. The motion sensors are pretty responsive, there have only been a few times that the camera has missed whatever it was that triggered it on.I'm very glad we chose this camera. Most of the videos and pictures we have so far are starring the outside cat, but I have managed to catch a few birds. Nice camera! :)

These work well if placed in the right position. 2 out of 3 of the units shut off for a second when you switch from off to any of the settings but seem to function just fine. When I first set them up, they had a hard time catching me on camera as I moved slowly around them at different distances. I was just about ready to return them but after lots of experimentation I discovered a few things. 1 they work better when something moves across the sensor as opposed to moving towards or away. 2 they trigger better on an object moving faster rather than slower. 3 they activate better when they are mounted in an elevated position pointing downward. Taking these three discoveries into account and placing the camera in an optimized position, it worked excellent in picture mode. I have not had any luck with video mode. While I do not believe the camera actually takes a full 8mp picture, the quality is very good. I did not notice much of a difference between .5mp and 10mp. I played with the cameras in total darkness and they take excellent black and white photos and video. Out of the many experiments in the dark, only once did I notice a very faint red glow. I used the SanDisk 32G ExtremePro which worked perfectly. I installed 8 fresh eneloop rechargeable batteries in one camera and aside from a little faster battery drain, they worked well. By the way, Audio came in nicely on the units in video mode as well. Another added bonus is the option to put in a security code so that if someone steals the unit it will at the least cause the thief some grief. If the video could initiate fast enough to capture a subject I would have rated this 5 stars. I am happy enough with these three that I will be purchasing more today.

If I could give this product a zero, I would. It is hands down the worst trail camera I have owned. I have owned other Stealth Cams and a competitor. Even though we live in a city, we have gotten some amazing shots of bears, coyotes, bobcats, and mountain lions. I have had good experiences with Stealth Cams in the past so I gave this one far more opportunity to work than I should have and now it's too late to return it so I now have a very expensive paperweight. Where to start with this disaster of a product. First, it takes hundreds of photos of absolutely nothing for no reason. Then, when an animal or person walks directly in front of it, it does not take any photos. When I first set this up, I thought grass or a tree branch must be triggering it. But, it turns out there was nothing. I know this because I moved it to my driveway and there was no grass or tree branch to trigger it. For some reason, the camera triggered and then it would trigger constantly for hours. I'd be left with over 1,000 photos of absolutely nothing. Then, the times I knew my dog or my kid had walked in front of it, there was not a single photo of the animal or child. I thought I had set something up incorrectly so I reset it to factory settings and then followed the directions step-by-step. Still no photos of anything actually moving in front of the camera. Only photos of the area in front of the camera with nothing moving.I kept trying to figure out what I was doing wrong. I went on vacation and left the trail camera set up hoping for some great shots while we were gone. We live in a city so the wildlife is out mainly at night. It's very unfortunate, then, that this camera doesn't take night shots. Well, it does take night shots but every single one of them is entirely black. I have attached one of the photos. I have thousands of them. All of them are black. The camera would trigger, just like during the day, and take thousands of shots overnight. Every. Single. One. Black. Was there actually an animal that walked through every now and then? Or was it just the camera triggering itself? I have no idea. And I'll never know because everything is pure black. When I discovered this, I again assumed I had done something wrong and went back to the factory settings and followed the step-by-step directions for setting up the camera for the third time. It did no good. The next night, over 1,800 black photos. And, then, after five weeks, the batteries were completely dead. This trail camera is a complete waste of money. I'm taking it to the electronics recycler when I go next time. Save yourself money and hassle and missed photos and pass on this trail camera.

Important - purchase a full sized 32G SD card, not a micro - I bought Scandisc and it works great. A lot of thought went into this camera and there must have been improvements made as the things folks complained about in the feedback are not be an issue with this one. I've only had the camera for a short while so I can't speak to it's longevity but it seems solid enough.This camera is an absolute breeze to set up, I plugged in the SD card, set up the optional password, created a custom recording program and was ready to strap it to a tree in less than five minutes and I've never used a trail cam before. The instruction book was excellent. The strap is high quality, and long enough to strap around a decent sized tree. The camera is securely fastened, no chance of it falling off.The first night at midnight, it captured an unusual sight, a chipmunk dashing down a tree and racing back up. I didn't know chipmunks climbed trees or were active at night. The internet says not but I now have proof otherwise. The chipmunk moved so fast that at first I didn't even see it and wondered what had triggered the camera. I was really impressed the camera caught it on video - I watched the video in slow motion and had to pause in order to confirm that it was really a chipmunk. The chipmunk image was a little blurry but the tree and surroundings were very clear. Got some excellent deer foraging activity in the dark - very good images. No sign that the deer knew it was being filmed.I purchased a card reader that plugs into my phone so I can pop the card out in the field and look at the pics and videos on my phone, delete what I don't want and put it back in the camera. This camera does not have wifi or blue tooth - I wasn't interested in spending that much money. The card is easy to remove and install without removing the camera from it's position on the tree.Password feature is great (use it if you want it) - you can't do anything with the camera without first entering the password so if someone steals it they won't be able to use it or even take out the SD card or batteries. The camera is designed to accommodate a physical lock but I didn't buy a locking strap either. I did buy energizer lithium batteries because the camera worked well with my rechargeable alkaline batteries with no issues but the battery life was not great.The camera has a rubber gasket around the face so when it's closed, the water can't get in. It's been raining for days and no sign of fogging at all. The test feature is nice after setting up to see what range of motion is being detected. Also the pre-set recording features made it easy to turn on photo burst and check the images to make sure I had the lens lined up with what I wanted to see. I then switched it to my custom program and walked away.I set up for 10 second videos at 8 Megapixels and each took 13MB on the SD card. So 35 GB will go a long way.Extremely happy with this purchase and will soon know what's tearing up my lawn at night!!

I have 8 of the older version of this camera.I JUST RECEIVED TWO MORE AND THE SECUREMENT IS DIFFERENT. I don’t know how I’m going to lock them down like I did the older version. I may end up returning them if I can’t secure it and easily access the inside.Everything below applies to the older version of this model:Used them for the past 6 years. The night vision on the 2nd set no longer work, stopped about 3 months after purchase. The screens on those two cameras also won’t allow me to adjust settings/time. I keep feeding it batteries bc videos are still recording.The video mode seems to take about 5 sec (not 0.5 sec). The cameras are staged along roads and paths. I’ll often see dust from vehicles or hear wildlife as they’ve already passed the camera. While checking my own interaction in front of the camera, most of the time, the camera doesn’t even turn on (all 4). The 100 ft claim is a far stretch. Generally it’s max detection is about 50ft. It does seem to pick up on noise, which has been helpful catching shots it would have otherwise missed. It’s as if it preloads time start early, but that could be a delay from something else I missed.Video quality is relatively good. I wish I could have longer videos. It takes minutes to start up a subsequent video, so unless your game or thief is just hanging out, you’ll miss important footage.Night vision seems to work fine.The two I bought 3 years ago are still working. I’ve switched to rechargeable batteries because they’ll suck the life out of normal batteries within two weeks.They aren’t water tight as condensation collects inside the camera sensor area and in the window making it nonfunctional.I have pulled license plates and gotten decent screen shots of trespassers.Will I buy this camera or brand again? At first thought, it was a No; however, I’m buying four more right now. Primarily because I lock the trail camera down (1/4” cable) to prevent theft. The way I lock it down, this is the only camera and model that I could find that meets my needs.

***CAUTION*** READ THIS BEFORE YOU BUY YOUR MEMORY CARD FOR THIS CAMERA!!The product is just as most describe it. Solid built, quality workmanship, etc. but important information has been left out of the instructions & product description from the manufacturer. I just got off the phone with their customer service about 1 hour ago (1-26-15) because all of my pics were coming out very blurry & grainy. The first question he asked me was what brand of card did I have- he said he camera is supported by 2 brands- SanDisk & PNY. I explained I had a Class 10 32gb PNY SD card(second card I had bought as first was class 4). The new 32gb card I got was A MICRO card with the adapter that comes with it.That's when he told me that NO Micro cards were supported by the camera. I explained I had not seen anywhere in the instructions nor advertising/promotions stated that fact. The Stealth Cam tech guy said it was in the instructions, but I got my manual out & there was no mention of the unsupported Micro cards. I was surprised that he had told me it was in the instructions when in fact it had not.If I am wrong about this please let me know & I will change my rating.***UPDATE***. I have owned this camera for about 6 months now I am so pleased with the camera I am now rating the product 5 starsinstead of the three stars I first rated it due to the SPECIFIC type of memory card. The recommended card is the full sizeCard that is a type 10 NOT A MICRO with the adapter whether it is a Type 10 or not. These memory cards have super fasttransfer rates so the abilities of the camera can be seen in perfect clarity.BTW- go ahead & spend the few extra dollars for the Energizer Ultimate batteries they really work well. I had the cameraout for about 6 weeks taking LOTS of pics, etc, the batteries were still full strength. Picture clarity, distance of detection,& excellent camera standby to help make an excellent product.New 5 star rating for camera because it's AWESOME! Just make sure to get the right memory card & use the best batteries

This ain't a bad camera at all. I live out in the country, and I've had more than a few of my dogs come up poisoned, or shot, or simply just show up dead. I guess you could say I'm the local animal shelter, in a way. I'm just the sort of person who isn't going to turn away a stray. If they show up at my house, they'll have food, they'll have water, and they can stay as long as they like. I simply abhor anyone who kills animals merely because their existance displeases them. Numerous police reports have been filed, more than a few stray dogs have been buried on my property out of respect and love for man's best friend.Enough is enough. I ordered this camera and a 32GB SD card(as well as some supporting hardware for my computer, namely a USB splitter and an SD card reader), and I have the set up in the most likely avenue of attack; aimed straight at the only road in front of my house.Set up was surprisingly easy if you have a bit of knowledge when it comes to technology. I have it set to be pin protected, and to run in 3-shot bursts from 6pm to 7 am, the times of night when the traffic outside would be busiest, all the way through the dead of night. It came with one strap, allowing you to mount it easily to the side of a tree, or in my case, a post on my front porch, up high enough to where no one can steal it without first climbing onto my porch and in turn, being mere feet away from my bedroom. The resolution I have it set to right now is 8 megapixels, and so far, I'm impressed.The daytime photos it takes are clear, sharp, and large, allowing you to see a lot of detail, and the night time photos are grainy like any other infrared setup, but they are still large, and plenty clear enough for you to pick out fine details.The unit itself is surprisingly small, about as big as two boxes of ammo stacked one on top of the other. It's surprisingly lightweight as well, seeing as only a simple nylon strap is more than capable of holding it firmly in place on whatever you mount it to. It's also extremely efficient, even though it uses 8 AA batteries. I put some Lithium-Ion Energizers in there, and going on its third night of sentry duty, it's still at a full charge.This was actually my first trail camera, and while I wish it was under better circumstances, so far she has impressed me. For the price it's a damn good addition to any hunter's kit, or in a pinch, an impromptu security camera.

I am very happy with this purchase as the camera itself is small, solidly-built, and well-camouflaged. It is INCREDIBLY easy to set up and the battery life has been quite long: nightly use for about a month. I find the image quality to be very good for my purposes, which is shooting at close range...the goal was to see how many skunks were living under my deck. :-[ I have not yet used it for distance but the wide-angle lens should be effective if the motion is sufficient to trigger it. Nighttime images have been clearer than on some other trail-cams I've used in the past.
