Collins COBUILD Advanced American English Dictionary

This is an excellent academic reference for English language learners. Even for a paperback, the quality of binding and typeface is excellent. It is more comprehensive than the Longman Advanced American Dictionary, and is on par with Merriam Webster’s Advanced Learner’s English Dictionary. Easy to read, lots of helpful word usage examples. Since it bills itself as an American Dictionary, it is sometimes puzzling why they included certain words or phrases, like ‘jai alai’, or ‘crying jag’, and yet omitted others like ‘mailing it in’.In the end, this is a book worth having if you are OK paying a premium for it. If you want something less expensive, go for Merriam Webster’s Advanced Learner’s English Dictionary.

A great dictionary for English learners!

This is a must have, a very, very good buy. The best of all the Collins Cobuild.

This book is good when you live to America or Canada to use it for school or university.

2007年にCollins Cobuild Advanced Dictionary of American Englishが出ている。少し書名が異なるが、本辞典はこの辞典の改訂第2版である。改訂版のための序文がないので、改訂の趣旨がわからないが、総ページが1951頁から1610ページに増えているので、増補版と言っていいだろう。selfie, cyberbullying などの新語が追加されているし、前付も修正が加えられている。例えば、Dear dictionary user で始まるLetter from John Sinclair が削除されてAbout COBUILD dictionaries に置き換えられているなど。Sinclair の没年は2007年であるから、徐々にCOBULD辞書から名が消えてゆくのであろうか。コラム記事の写真がかなり入れ替えられているが、その理由はよくわからない。ともあれ辞書は1年ぐらい使ってみないと詳しい差異は分からない。気がついたら追加報告します。初版にはCD-ROMがついていたが、本辞典には付いていない。後で独立して出るのであろうか。米国系のEFL辞典は少ないので最新辞書として利用価値は大だろう。
