Hydration! Lowers bun and creatinine- my dog loves it!!!
My 10yr lab/bloodhound mix ho is 65 lbs was diagnosed early May 2025 with first stage or start of kidney failure- it was horrible news. The vet sent us out with 8lbs of hills Kd food for 60.00. She wouldn’t eat it. I tried adding the canned kid food to the kibble..still meh on food and the cans are 7.00 each, so I started researching- I found this base. I added about 5-6 oz of slow cooked chicken beast in water and shedded it out. Added organic steamed baby carrots…and mushroom powder along with omega 3 fish oil to her food. The big thing with kidney failure is HYDRATION…and here’s how I tweak her diet after her 1 month check up we just had. The vet thought I was definitely doing wrong by dog feeding her a “homage diet” he really put that down UNTIL her bloodwork came back 30 mins later. Her Bun was back to normal. Her protein was down 3 points and she’d lost 2lbs. So the vet was thrilled and told me to keep doing what I’m doing but reduce her to 1.5 oz of chicken per meal, add rice for carbs to keep her weight up and add beans to her food. So I’m now slow cooking her beans (more hydration) rice (more hydration) and I just hit Phos-bind In. That will attach to the proteins in blood and force it it when uses the bathroom. This reduces the phosphorus in her blood created from animal proteins- she can have all the vegetable proteins she wants. And now I’m cutting her omega 3 oil in 1/2 and using evoo or flaxseed oil to her food daily. This base mix is 50% hydration - my dog in 2 weeks from starting this diet is drinking normally again. Had not incontinence issues anymore and boy is she back to 100% of her energetic self. She loves the food, loves the rice, carrots and beans. I cook it all myself because you don’t want the sodium of pre made. We go back in 3 months and see what her bloodwork says. But this food and the trouble of cooking all her food and bathing each item separately is really worth it. I do see the improvement in her before adding the beans and carbs last night. I can’t wait to try the phosphorus binder. I just want her happy and pain free as long as I am blessed to have her. BadThe 10 lbs bag last about 6 weeks for me with a large dog. The cost of everything is about 1/2 or more than if I was buying hills kibble and canned food. Nope not healthy for them. Kibble is the devil for real. It hurts their bodies. It over cooked and not moist. I need to find her some kind of hard thing to scraper teeth to eat. Bones are no due to animal products…but she’s so much happier. No more waking me up to go out 3 times a night. Or wetting the bed (happened 2 times/ first time I took her in that week to the vet- she’s never wet the bed In Life) I hope this review helps. I wax overwhelmed and spent 1.5 weeks researching hours a day on how to best approach kidney failure/ disease in dogs. I’m glad I tried this food. It’s a life saver. I wish I’d feed her this since I got her at 7 weeks old. I doubt we’d be seeing kidney issues now if I’d known better.

Finally a dog food that I can gear to the needs of each of my dogs!
This post is about my positive experience with a new dog food that I tried called Dr. Harvey’s Miracle Dog Food Pre- mix Health Food. My husband and I adopted another rescue greyhound in late January and he was nothing but skin and bones. He broke his ankle on the track and was retired. You may not know this but racing dogs are fed raw meat. Of course when he went to the rescue group he was switched to a dry kibble food which I could tell was not agreeing with him due to his terrible gas, upset stomach at least 3 times a week and loose stools. I know, TMI! So I wanted to put him on a high quality, high protein, good fat, and low carb diet which is very expensive as carbs and meat by-products (road kill, and all other parts of slaughtered animal other than meat, skin, or organs, such as beaks, feet). Gross right? I tried at least 5 different very expensive dry kibble with no luck. He didn’t gain weight , he continued to have upset stomachs, and horrible gas! He is 3 years old. In the meantime, my 11 year greyhound was recommended to be put on a prescription diet for kidney care where she needs no more than 14% protein, high Omèga-3 and low phosphorus. Well, I put her on that but of course she wouldn’t eat it. And did I mention that I always put either wet dog food or toppers to entice both of them to eat their food. However what ended up happening was that my senior dog wanted the young one’s food and vice versa defeating the purpose of trying to get them in the best health possible. I then heard from a vet online on how to slow cook protein such as beef, chicken, turkey, pork , or eggs with green beans, sweet potatoes, rice, peas with some fish added about twice a week, for their daily meal. This worked for about 2 weeks but it was very time consuming trying to feed two 75 pound dogs. I would have 2 crockpots going at once. The vet said if you slow cooked the food for 20-24 hours, then they could eat the chicken bones because they would just crumble apart but of course, I didn’t trust that and I would find some leg bones and thigh bones which were still hard and splintery so I would have to mush through every thing which was very time consuming. But the worst part was that my young one continued to have upset stomachs and horrible gas and I wasn’t sure if this was best for my senior dog’s kidney issues. So back online I went and found a vet nutritionist who has been selling a dehydrated, human grade dog food for over 20 years that you add hot water to rehydrate and add the amount of protein and oil your dog needs. In the pictures below you can see a list of the ingredients. This way I am able to control the amount of protein that my senior dog needs daily, 8-10 oz, and a good omega-3. I was using canned sardines but at 1.99 a can, which would be a little under half the amount of protein she needs, that was getting a little expensive. My young greyhound gets 20-22 oz of protein a day along with some olive oil. I accomplish this by baking 4-5 chicken leg quarters per day which yields me about 2 lbs of protein per day. I recently switched to marine phytoplankton which is plant based pure omega-3 which is grown or farmed in ocean water so it’s a sustainable supply. You only need a fourth of a teaspoon per day per dog (powder form) mixed in their food. This dog food has truly been a miracle food source for them. They both attack their food like they haven’t eaten for days. They eat twice a day. My young greyhound has not had a stomachache since starting this food, no gas, no licking of his fur or paws and he seems to feel so good. My senior dog is getting the right nutritional balance for kidney issues and absolutely loves her food. She still plays with her squeaky toys every night after eating. They also do zoomies in the back yard every day to get their 3 minute exercise routine done. If you have dogs with particular nutritional needs or you just want your fur baby to eat a great quality food, I highly recommend this food, and no, I am not being paid for this review. It’s been a 6 month struggle to find a good dog food that works for both of them. Arlo and Kibbles give it 5 stars!

Changed my Dog's Life!
My dog has kidney disease and has been prescribed kidney safe dog food - and he refused to eat every single brand. He was wasting away, his coat was dry & scraggly, he was lethargic, & sad. It truly appeared that he was no longer thriving in any way. I was devastated. Out of pure frustration, I started googling different food options & found Dr Harveys, who offered a free sample. Because my dog is small it was enough for about week of food. I follow the directions, gave it to my dog, and for the first time in many, many months, he immediately ate & then are all of his food. I just couldn't believe it. I went ahead and bought the bigger bag hoping that it wasn't a fluke. Since then, my dog has eaten all of his food at every meal!!! Within several weeks everything changed for him. My dog, it's like a whole new dog! His coat is full, shiny & soft. He is running around and happy again... It almost feels like I haven't seen him like this since he was a puppy. Before I thought he was pretty close to death and now I know that we have more years ahead with him. I feel so good giving this food to my sweet boy. I love that everything is organic and whole. I love that he is getting his healthy fats from coconut oil or extra virgin olive oil. I love that I am able to rotate different kinds of protein for him. He goes for a check up next week & I can't wait to see his bloodwork results. I'm forever grateful to Dr Harvey!

Determined to give the best quality of life (kidney & liver disease)
TLDR: Dog has liver & kidney disease. I am using this, a renal diet, immunity boosting mushrooms, milk thistle and goats milk w/probiotics. Day 1 he loved it, will update. I intend to follow up with this review as time goes on. He has a follow up vet appointment in a few weeks where I will request another blood sample to be taken and I will share the results. Background: I have a 14 year old Shih Tzu named Diesel. 14 pounds. He has been my rock and support system for all these years, best believe in his golden years I'm going to give him the best quality of life and love I can afford. He had been picky about eating, chewing/gnawing on treats, had an occasional cough/hack and random bouts of vomiting. The vet diagnosed him with a small heart murmur and his lab work showed signs of stage 2 kidney failure and liver disease. The vet recommended I change his food and provide him supplements. Science diet/KD didn't feel like a good choice to me. I did some research on his lab work (included photo) and scoured all available resources to better understand his complications. I'm NOT a vet and neither is the internet, but after hours of reading research papers and random commercial websites to understand what was going on I found Dogaware.com a thorough and easy to read resource on both kidney and liver disease. I highly recommend you give it a reading if your fur babe has the same issues. Basically, "the goal is to reduce phosphorus by feeding moderate to high fat, moderate amounts of high quality protein, and low phosphorus carbohydrates to provide calories...fed several small meals throughout the day rather than just one or two large meals." I looked at all the top rated at-home treatments for his condition and found that certain mushrooms were the main ingredient and milk thistle. I then searched for what foods are recommended for a liver and kidney cleansing/healing diet. I found this dog food and was impressed with great reviews on both Chewy and Amazon. Many of the reviews spoke of it improving their dogs kidney and liver disease issues, let's give it a shot! I have paired it with goats milk containing pre&probiotics, an organic mushroom blend (ideally for the turkey tail and cordyceps), milk thistle and bene-bac plus probiotic (for an occasional boost). This food is meant as a base, meaning YOU HAVE TO ADD PROTEIN!! So on the side I have prepared ground chicken in coconut oil paired with recommended vegetables (i.e. sweet potato, carrots, peas, green beans, kale, pumpkin, asparagus). *note* if you can get green Tripe it's supposed to be really good for them). BASICALLY MY PRINCE IS EATING BETTER THAN ME LOL 1st review 6/26/2020: Opening the food I was very impressed, it just looks "healthy." I also like that it has ground egg shell included for calcium and it balances out phosphorus. I added one scoop with hot water and let it soak. After a few minutes I mixed in the ground chicken-veggie mix I had prepared, a tiny bit of mushroom powder, his first 1/2 dose of bene-bac plus and the goats milk. (The milk thistle will be delivered in two days). Honestly, I wasn't prepared for his reaction. He's usually a bit picky and will stare me down if he doesn't like it. He chowed it down with no hesitation!!! Only time will tell if this will be a component to his recovery, but I look forward to utilizing this as the foundation to his success. Please note: I know there's a kidney supplement Dr. Harvey offers, but it had limited reviews and my intuition felt it would be best to stick with the mushrooms and milk thistle which I know are key components to many of the elixirs offered. July 24th update: TLDR: Dog is happy, energetic and fur looks great. I haven't had a chance to go back to my vet yet for lab work, hopefully soon. However, He must have been feeling sick before because within a week of his new diet he was more energetic, playful and would actually go on walks whereas before I practically had to drag him out. Also, his breath smells WAY better, his fur is looking thicker and shinier, he has an appetite now and has gained a 1.5 lbs or so. I have been meal prepping for the week. I prepare and store the meat cooked in coconut or salmon oil and Dr Harvey's mixed with the mushroom powder separately. When serving meals I add the meat to a bowl, reheat it in the microwave, take it out and add the pre-prepared dr Harvey's. I Then top it with the Epakitin, milk thistle, goats milk with probiotics and occasionally benebac plus for a boost. **NOTE: I have since included Epakitin a recommended chitosan-based phosphate binder to sprinkle on his food. If you read the articles you'll know why its important. Will update again soon xoxo

Worth every penny!
This is a great product. The base mix of Dr. Harvey's dog food line is as close to homemade as you can get but with the assurance that all your dog's nutritional needs are being met. The best part is that my dog loves it. Before I found Dr. Harvey's, my dog just wouldn't eat for days. I tried every kind of food in the retail market at pet stores I tried top grade kibble, top grade fresh, and my dog refused it all. Finally, I received Dr. Harvey's base mix and my dog is ready to eat when I put his bowl down. He is now in the best of health. His coat is healthy looking ad shiny. My dog has more energy. I can vary the proteins added to the food too.

Good ingredients, high price
Started buying this since the quality dropped drastically with honest kitchen dehydrated food. This dog food has lots of whole ingredients and makes meal time a breeze. We use this as a nice little topper for my dog’s food and they love it. I am also able to freeze small portions in ice cube trays and give it to my pets as a treat

didn't tempt my very picky eater
My dog was diagnosed with stage 2 kidney disease back in October of this year (2025). It has been an ongoing battle since then to find a kidney friendly diet that she'll eat. She is SO picky. I was excited when I discovered Dr. Harveys canine Health. The idea of adding my own protein to the mix sounded like it would suit my girl perfectly - i figured I could rotate the proteins to keep her interested. The first day I made it, I offered it with a bit of ground turkey and she licked the bowl clean. She did the same for her other three meals of the day (we are feeding her little and often to help manage her low appetite (she's lost a lot of weight whilst in the animal hospital recently, and needs to gain her weight) so I was really excited that I'd found something that worked. Two days later, she turned her nose up. I've mixed the food with various other proteins (which she will eat just fine when fed on their own) and she won't touch this stuff when the protein is added to it. To be honest, I think maybe part of the problem is that the texture is so 'gluey' she might be actually having a hard time eating it. I've tried adding more water, but it doesn't seem to encourage her to eat it. I'll try feeding her again with this Canine Health food in a few weeks and see if I can slowly get her to finish the bag (really hate that Amazon return policy is not very friendly towards pet food and treats or I'd just send it back) but once it's gone, I won't be buying another bag. I've had better success with Forza10 renal diet for dogs (which you can also buy on Amazon). It's expensive, and my dog's (about 10lb) recommended feeding amount is four trays a day, but she LOVES it and hasn't gone off it yet. We tried the k/d prescription diet, but she wouldn't touch it.

This cures what ails dogs. Miraculous turnaround in the health of my sickly pups!
I can't say enough good stuff about this food. I have two rescue pups, just turned a year old. They’re brother and sister pit bull mixes who had a rough start to life and I assume were malnourished in the womb as well, based on their many issues. I’ve had them for 6 months and through this time, we haven’t gone a week without consecutive days of diarrhea. They’ve been treated with antibiotics, probiotics, yogurt, pumpkin, rice water, everything the vets could think of for “shelter gut”. I finally got them somewhat stable (we could go 3-4 days without an episode and the episodes only lasted a day) with homemade turkey and rice supplemented with a limited protein turkey-only kibble but we still had issues weekly and they were always scratching and biting themselves. The female, Pepper, had recurring ear infections and her eyes were always goopy. The male, Salt, is naturally super anxious and skittish and when he’d get ill all over the house, he’d be even more upset by the aggravated humans cleaning up the hellacious mess so it was sort of a vicious cycle. Not a very fun start to their lives with us! I was constantly researching what I could try and one day Dr. Harvey’s food prep video popped up in my Facebook newsfeed. I went to the site and poked around. Even after reading all the testimonials, I was nervous to try something new yet again because I was spending so much on the special kibble with limited success and I really didn’t want another “semi” fix. Looking back, I wish I’d bought the 10 lb. bag the first day I saw it! I was able to switch the dogs over pretty much immediately with no ill effects. They LOVE this stuff which is surprising because it looks like weird veggie oatmeal. But when the kettle goes on, they’re glued to my side until the stuff is cooled and ready to eat. They’ve never been healthier. We’ve had no diarrhea since day one (and believe me, I am FAR TOO AWARE of their every movement. I'm really looking forward to new hobbies!) Their coats, which I thought were just naturally coarse and wiry, are so soft and shiny now. Pepper’s ears have cleared up and her eyes are improving dramatically. Their constant scratching has decreased a lot and Salt even seems calmer and less twitchy, which is simply amazing. I think it has everything to do with the fact that they both feel great and their humans are finally at ease. And they’ve only been eating this stuff for TWO WEEKS. Can't wait to see how much better they get. All this to say: Dr. Harvey’s Canine Health Miracle Food is truly fantastic. It cures what ails dogs, I have proof. It improves their health and well-being beyond what you’d expect for mere food. Health really does begin in the kitchen! My pups will never eat processed kibble again. I only wish I’d known of this food for all my previous dogs.
