Synology DiskStation 2-Bay Diskless Private Cloud NAS (DS214se)

I don't really write many 5-star reviews, but this little unit has been great! I'm a photographer and video artist so I create a ton of data. After some backup issues, I decided that I was finally going to go all in on a RAID system. I considered some more expensive options and some cheaper options but this seemed like a great value unit that would have the functionality that I wanted. ( A RAID 1, Redundant setup)Additionally, I was really surprised and impressed with the functionality of the DSM (the name for their system software). Easy enough for slightly-above-novice level. And there's so much functionality and so many options for the advanced user.Positives:Easy to use, intuitive, web based GUI. Supports shttp and ssh.Software is updated constantly with security fixes and improvementsTons of software is available to run on this little guy, Including a whole bunch of community supported software. (surveillance server, webserver, domain server, etc) Check out [...]Two USB ports in the back to extend functionality.Based on Debian Linux. Very Stable. Configurable.Runs a timemachine server to automate backups over the network on OSX.Cons:File sharing links seem a little weird, they seem to go through a 3rd party link system that doesn't always seem to workDynamic DNS was tricky to get set up but seems to work.Not really a con because I knew it going in but.. Processor is a bit slow so a bit more resource intensive programs aren't going to be happy next to each other.Overall I would definitely recommend this product to anyone looking for a NAS that is easy to use and secure. Very pleased with this product.

Anymore in my life, hassle-free is always better. I REALLY appreciate things that work like you would want them to and that you can get to do that with the least amount of messing around with them. This Synology Diskstation does just that. We needed to replace a couple of aging WD MyBook World units in our church network, and I wanted to go with something that did RIAD mirroring to minimize the impact of a single drive failure. Initially, I copped for a significantly lower price of a competitive model of NAS. That unit failed within a week of installation. Needless to say, you want and expect your NAS to perform with no malfunctions or errors because of the mission critical nature of the service it provides - especially on a small business network with multiple users. So, I sent back the defective brand X and spent the extra money for the Diskstation. I took it out of the box, installed a couple of Synology approved Seagate drives, turned the power on and plugged it into the network. After a little while, the Diskstation was finished setting up the RAID, and it downloaded and installed the latest software. From that point it was only a few more minutes of using a completely intuitive web interface to set up all the shares I needed, assign a dozen users with password authentication, and start copying the existing WD drives to the Diskstation. I'm only using a fraction of the things that the unit is capable of, but what I have turned on works beautifully, reliably, quickly, and with absolutely no hassle. This is a smooth piece of equipment that I cannot recommend highly enough. For me and my clients, there is absolutely NOTHING not to like about it.

after researching for months on which NAS box to get i settled on the DS214se. After talking to some friends and looking at interfaces, features, etc. Synology was by far the best rated and most well put together of all NAS that i saw. If you knew nothing about setting this system up, synology will simplify it if needed. making a synology account you can skip all potentially frustrating network setup options. But I went the hard route and I have to say, I am impressed with all the advanced features of this "home or small business" NAS box. This has enough optinos for any business and although its for my personal use, its has everythign i need.The box construction is very solid and very simple to install by removing the side plastic which exposes the conntion and internal componets. the fan appears to be a farily typical fan so upgrading it could be an option if desired.I used a WD red 4TB hard drive and the first drive shipped to me was DOA, after setting up the system multiple times before figuring out it was the drive was actually informative as i am now familar with synologys companion software. it will be in your best interest to download the OS from synology called the "DSM" and also their setup software that automatically detects the box on your network when nothing is setup yet. without the software you have to manually find the connected local ip's on the network and connect that way. the dsm can be downloaded throught the NAS box but will be quicker if downloaded before setting up the box through a web browser and imported to the NAS during setup.Mobile apps are great, simple and once ready the nas is responsive and connects without issue everytime. although i do wish that all 5-6 apps would be combined so it could be one app that does all that in one. video streaming, photos, download manager, file manager, etc all combined into one app with a single login. wishful thinking i guessall in all, definately recommend and will buy again for any busines or friend that is curious

Il peut sembler contraignant au départ de n'avoir aucun disque d'install et une seule fiche papier avec une adresse internet.MAIS il faut reconnaître que l'initialisation est remarquablement simple .Une fois sur le site de SYNOLOGY, Le NAS est détecté automatiquement .l'ergonomie est très bonne. Affichage simple et intuitif.Bonne  qualité de fabrication.Très silencieux avec 2 disques Western Digital WD Red - 2 x 3 To (Pack de 2)ATTENTION: il peut sembler anormal que le CPU du NAS soit utilisé à 100% pendant de nombreuses heures, voire plusieurs jours  dans le cas de galeries photos archivées (comme c'est mon cas). Cela est normal, le NAS effectuant une tâche de création de vignettes qui est assez lente (le CPU du NAS est bien moins puissant que celui d'un PC) Une fois la partie indexation terminée, le CPU revient à un taux de charge faible.

La verdad es que no puedo estar más contenta con este NAS.Estuve dudando bastante entre unos y otros pero creo que esta fue la mejor opción calidad-precio.El dia de mañana igual me pillo uno algo más rápido pero vamos que este va bastante bien para un uso semi profesional. Si tuviera que darle más caña o si lo usara en red con más usuarios se me quedaría algo corto.Lo de conectarme desde la calle para ver mis documentos es una pasada..La instalación super fácil, y es bastante bastante silencioso. Luego por la noche desde el mismo móvil lo apago porque si que las lucecitas a oscuras son algo molestas.

Ho deciso di comprare un NAS perché, se qualche anno fa occupare 500 GB di un HDD era un'impresa, oggi basta davvero poco. Chiunque abbia a che fare con l'informatica ha costantemente bisogno di spazio, sia la causa il disordine, i progetti voluminosi o la grande quantità di dati che si possiede. Io tocco tutti e tre gli aspetti, perciò, un NAS era d'obbligo. In secondo luogo, ho deciso installare una Telecamera Foscam FI9805W nel negozio e avevo bisogno di una unità compatibile dove poter registrare i filmati. Dopo non molte ricerche, ho scoperto questo prodotto, consigliato, del resto, nella pagina dei NAS compatibili per la telecamera IP. Così, dopo essermi informato sul marchio e sulla qualità dei prodotti Synology (a quanto pare i migliori per uso consumer) ho deciso di acquistarlo assieme ad un HDD Western Digital Purple da 2 TB.Il DS214SE si presenta bene: ha un bel design, non produce rumore (forse si può sentire la ventola ma solo se nella stanza c'è assoluto silenzio) ed è molto semplice da usare fisicamente; l'installazione dei dischi al suo interno è particolarmente facile ed esso può funzionare anche con solamente un HDD installato. Possiede 2 porte USB alle quali si possono connettere altri HDD esterni in modo che anche quelli facciano parte del NAS e una porta di rete Gigabit. C'è anche la possibilità di installare una chiavetta wi-fi (credo siano necessari dispositivi compatibili) per usare il collegamento wireless. Ma veniamo al vero potenziale di questa Disk Station: il Sistema operativo. Si perché non ha un semplice firmware come, ad esempio, i classici mezzi di interconnessione di rete quali router o bridge, ma un vero e proprio software, chiamato Synology DSM (per ora, versione 5.1). Questo gli consente una dinamicità immensa, può tranquillamente sostituire un computer. Possiede, infatti, un processore e una memoria RAM e anche se il processore non è esattamente ciò che ci si aspetterebbe (MARVELL Armada 370 88F6707), consente comunque un utilizzo fluido e reattivo. Per accedere alla Disk Station è necessaria una configurazione iniziale, attraverso la quale è necessaria l'iscrizione e la creazione di un account nel sito Synology le quali credenziali usate saranno essenziali per accedere, poi, al NAS. L'interfaccia che ci si trova davanti, una volta completato l'accesso, è estremamente user-friendly: è, praticamente, una fusione fra interfacce grafiche usate da linux e da windows. Da qui si può accedere al pannello di controllo, attraverso il quale si può accedere a tantissime impostazioni: c'è, infatti, la possibilità di:- Gestire i dischi installati, partizionandoli ed eseguendo, a scelta dell'utente oppure programmandolo, un controllo del disco veloce e completo. Le verifiche dei dischi sono molto lunghe ma restituiscono moltissimi dettagli su come il disco è stato formattato e sullo stato fisico dello stesso, mostrano se ci sono problemi di settori o altro (tramite valori S.M.A.R.T.).- Gestire cartelle di rete e impostazioni di condivisione- Gestire gli utenti, le autorizzazioni o i gruppi- Gestione delle connettività, attraverso le quali è possibile accedere alla Disk Station anche attraverso internet, utilizzando DDNS Synology gratuiti, configurare Router, utilizzare la Disk Station come server DHCP, Creare collegamenti PPPoE (punto a punto), Controllare il traffico di rete, impostare percorsi e creare manualmente tabelle di routing, gestire connessioni wireless o bluetooth (con appositi adattatori) e modificando impostazioni sulla sicurezza, come il firewall integrato, la protezione da attacchi DOS o, cosa che mi ha interessato molto, l'accesso al NAS tramite certificato generato dallo stesso.- Leggere informazioni sullo stato dei dischi, sulla Disk Station o sulla rete- Modificare stili di accesso- Attivare controlli avanzati da terminale, Telnet o SNMP- Attivare le notifiche (utilissime) via mail o via SMS (in questo caso sono necessari servizi a pagamento)- Impostare pianificazioni- Modificare impostazioni sull'Hardware e sul risparmio energetico- Modificare privilegi- Scansionare i dischi in cerca di file multimediali da condividereOltre a tutto questo, c'è la possibilità di accedere ad uno store di applicazioni (gratuite) installabili nella Disk Station. Per esempio, io ho scaricato l'applicazione che mi consente di registrare il filmato che mi arriva dalla telecamera e l'applicazione che mi permette di usare il NAS come Download Station (File torrent, emule, HTTP, FTP, ecc..). Si possono installare antivirus, applicazioni web multimediali, compilatori per la programmazione e qualsivoglia pacchetto. Il lettore multimediale integrato legge qualsiasi tipo di formato audio, dai Lossless, ai lossy fino ai formati playlist.Altra cosa molto importante, Synology rilascia aggiornamenti costanti per il sistema operativo, aggiungendo dispositivi per la compatibilità, risolvendo problemi sulla sicurezza o migliorando l'interfaccia.Sono davvero soddisfatto dell'acquisto, ha completamente superato le mie aspettative. Sento che i miei dato sono al sicuro. Come sempre, nulla da dire sul servizio di spedizione di Amazon.
