Great fan for pushing tons of air. Not a quiet house fan.
I bought this to cool off my garage at the peak of summer. I opened the side door of the garage in the early morning or late evening and turned on this fan and it would bring down the garage temp by 5 degrees in a few minutes. It worked perfectly. Some rain recently leaked through a gap under the side door of the garage and I had a mini-flood in the garage. No problem. I swept out most of the water with a push broom, and then turned this fan on. It dried the floor off in 30 minutes. I then pointed it to the other areas got wet and it dried those out too. If you want to move tons of air and get the job done with gusto, this is a great fan. If you want a quiet fan to gently circulate the air in your house, this is NOT the fan to buy. Speed 1 isn't too bad if you are near the fan--but it would probably drown out a typical TV or radio volume. Speeds 2 and 3 produce some serious wind noise (and crazy wind), so I don't use those too much. The fan is not perfectly balanced, so with mine there is a slight vibration, but it is not enough to make it move. The rubber feet keep the fan firmly planted. There are no rattles or other noises--just the motor and the whine of the blades along with a healthy sound of wind. I was curious about the power consumption. Mine uses about 100W on speed 1, 110W on speed 2, and about 125W on speed 3. Perfectly acceptable for me.

Not the PATTON I grew up admiring!!!
This fan moves air lik it should SO FAR. I have only had this fan for a few days it is is already making a odd humming noise that I DO NOT LIKE! Im going to be stuck with one as I tossed the box but the other is going back. This is not the same quality as the old fan from this maker I still have from the 80's. Sad that a company like this has sold out for profits rather than just making enough to keep going on and have satisfied customers. Just another cheaply made fan with a trusted name thrown on it. I dont have any suggestion for a replacement in fact I am taking suggestion if ya have some. Update 9/23/2018 Well the fan is somewhat ok but for the price I paid I expect a bit more. First thing is the fan tubular steel they used as a base is crap. After only few months this fan is moving on its own and I have to keep tightening the bolts every other day sometimes twice a day. That pinched tubular steel is going to start to split at the pinch and I am going to have a fan with no base.... WTF PATTON? Update 5/25/2020 This fan runs 24/7 since it arrived. Easy to clean, easy enough to keep a 13mm wrench to tighten up the base bolts. All around superior product it seems. Price has come down more since I purchased it so DONT TRUST AMAZON FOR FAIR PRICING!

I LOVE this FAN!
The Patton 18" high velocity fan is a wonderful product, and we are so happy we bought it. It is extremely powerful, and just emits the standard, white noise purr of a fan. It is sturdy and strong. Be prepared for a real wind storm when it is on the highest setting (it has 3 speeds). This is not a cheap, plastic "toy" of a fan, it is the real deal. Lasko also makes a metal fan similar to this model (I believe the Lasko fan is 20" in size), but, the advantage Patton has over any Lasko fan is that the circuit breaker in the plug in the Patton fan is completely replaceable if it is ever "blown" for some electrical reason. Not so, with Lasko fans. None of their fans have removable circuit breakers in the plugs, so if a breaker fails, well, I guess you throw away the Lasko fan? Seriously, at the very least, you would have to take it in to be repaired and to have the cord replaced and that could get expensive! Does it sound like I have a problem with Lasko fans? You bet. I purchased this Patton fan to replace the Lasko #3723 20-Inch Premium Box Fan 3-SPEED I previously purchased from Amazon. The Lasko fan has cheap and flimsy plastic blades, no where near the power of this Patton fan, and, after just 3 days of use, started to emit this terrible clicking noise when it was running. The Lasko fan was promptly returned, and I ordered this Patton model to replace it. I have never looked back. This fan, for only a few dollars more, is twice the fan the Lasko model was. If you need an indoor fan (or even one for the patio in dry weather or the garage), definitely go with this Patton 18" fan. You will be glad you did!

This is not your grandfather's fan...
...and it's not meant to be. Those fans, which can still be bought, are 20" and are built with more heavy duty parts. This is not that fan and is not intended to be a replacement for one. Those that have rated this one compared to the old ones are not rating it on it's own merits but instead on what they wanted it to be. Others have rated this relatively low based on the noise level. Well look at the thing. It's obvious just from the picture that it's a loud fan. Patton is in the business of moving air. Lots of it. Moving air about generates sound. The more air you move, the more sound you make. There's no way around that fact. Congratulations, to both groups of reviewers. You failed. To the rest that rated this fan on what it is, good job. Now, on to my own review: All in all, a great fan. I've had it for some months now and the black paint hasn't peeled or scratched. It's looks just like it did when I took it out of the box. It moves air. Tremendous, unbelievable amounts of air and it does it with fairly little sound. Don't get me wrong, it's a loud fan. Just not as loud as I had expected. I bought this to replace for a 20" Patton knockoff fan that had given up after 5 years of heavy use. On it's low setting, this fan moves more air than the 20" it replaced did on high. Swap that around. This one on high made less noise than my bigger one on low. Compared to other fans it's own size I've dealt with through the years, it also stacks up very nicely. It moves a lot more air and is relatively quiet about it. The cage is sturdy enough although made of slightly lighter steel than would prefer. It collects surprisingly little dust and, in my house, dust is a cash crop. I've only had to give it a cursory wiping with my hand once. Even on the highest speed, there is fairly little resonant vibration in the cage. That is likely a good part of the reason the fan is comparatively quieter than similar ones. Again, though, I must stress that this isn't a quiet an and isn't meant to be. It stays where I put it on the floor and at the angle I want it, regardless of the speed setting. I've seen similar fans move themselves up and down as well as all over the place, on a smooth floor. I would like to have seen this come with a heavier gauge cord too. It's 18 gauge. While that is adequate, after my 1 year warranty is up, I'm almost certainly going to replace it with 14 or 12 gauge wire. The length is acceptable too. Another 2 or 3 feet would be better and is another reason for me to replace the cord, when the time comes. The motor housing does get hot but not to the point that I really worry about burning myself. After several hours on low, I can hold my hand on the housing for upwards of 20 seconds before it gets uncomfortable. I should note, though, that I work heavily with my hands and can tolerate things better than many people. As an example, the temperature of the dishwater I use turns my wife's hands bright red. Anyway, to the point. The housing doesn't get too hot. When I replace the cord, I suspect it will run even cooler because of the reduced impedance. Which, not entirely incidentally, will extend the life of the motor. Not that I expect the motor to fail any time soon. Peeking into the housing, the motor looks well made. The copper windings are tight and neat. I've seen electric motors so messy that it was a wonder they even worked let alone didn't catch fire. The fan blades are quite well balanced although not perfect. A perfect balance is a very difficult thing to do to be sure. I'm certainly not going to take the fan apart to try and get it better. It's easily more than good enough as it is. Here's another area that I'm surprised with. The amount of dust on the blades is quite small. The fan spent most of the summer running between 4 and 16 hours daily. Yet there is very little dust on the blades. I don't have any reason to clean the blades. So, for my 4 star rating. If the cage were a little heavier gauge and but for the merely acceptable power chord (<--- ha! heavy metal!), I would have given this 5 stars with no reservations. As is, it easily earns the 4 I gave it. There seems to be some confusion as to the assembly required. Here's the instructions: Step .01 Take it from the box and remove all the packaging. Step .02 Plug it in. Step .03 Turn it on. There's also some question as to where it's made. That would be China. In many people's minds, "Made in China" automatically equates with "It's JUNK". Well it doesn't. The Chinese are just as capable of making a quality product as any other country and this is one of them. I do prefer buying things that are made in the States. That's not because of quality. I don't want burst anyone's bubble, Actually, yes I do. I like it when people are forced to think for themselves. Americans make just as many flimsy, cheap piece of junk products as the Chinese do. Don't buy something based solely on where it was made unless keeping your money in your own country is your main concern.

This may be a more powerful fan than you want or need.
This little fan kicks some serious butt. I was replacing a twenty inch metal fan and ran across this eighteen inch thinking that it would be less powerful than the last one. But to my surprise this little beast on the low setting moves more then twice the air that my last one did. A fan that moves this much air is going to be somewhat audible. The motor is not that loud but the air that it moves does make noise. If you are looking for something that is quite this is not it. But if you are wanting to move a lot of air you won't be disappointed. I am so impressed with it that I will be buying another one shortly. Quality construction that should last for years to come. Some times you get more than your moneys worth, this would be one of those cases.

really keeps the room cool!
Although some folks may think this fan is too noisy for household use (I think it is considered a commercial-type fan) - I use it in my living room and love it! I rarely use air conditioning and prefer a fan to keep the room cool and generate a breeze, so I am used to the sound of a fan -- so I don't find it annoying, but can imagine some might. I watch tv with no problem - without the need to turn it up much more than usual. I run at on low and turn it away from me, since it really can give you a chill - at least for now. The warm season has only just begun, so I do not need it blowing on me yet - just circulating the air. When the summer comes into full swing, I can imagine I'll be appreciating this fan even more - but will probably still never use it higher than the low setting. So did I really need this type of fan? Perhaps not, but since I use a fan - sometimes 24/7 during the summer months - and rarely turn on the a/c - I need a heavy duty fan that will take the abuse of being in constant use - without me worrying about the motor overheating. I have been using 'commercial-type' fans for years in my home and find that they last a very long time with just once a year cleaning and adding a few drops of oil to them. They are dependable and I never worry about leaving them on when I have to leave the house for a bit but want to ensure my dogs are comfortable. Speaking of my dogs: my two Great Danes love this fan. I often see them sleeping in front of it - so it is dog-approved too!

It's a BLAST
This fan absolutely blasts the air. Bought it to move my cool a/c air from a window a/c into another room and boy does it do the job. I now use it when I'm on the treadmill and a quick way to dry my hair which is long and thick. Heat from blow driers damage hair but you can dry long thick hair sitting in front of this fan for 2 minutes. Best money I ever spent.

Good fan overall but a little pricey
This is a good fan overall - but a bit pricey. The fan cuts through the humid air (I have no no a/c) and provides relief but didn't have a strong cooling breeze as I expected.
