Taylor Instant Read Analog Meat Food Grill BBQ Cooking Kitchen Thermometer with Red Pocket Sleeve for Calibration, 1 inch dial, Stainless Steel

This is a superb, reasonably priced instant read thermometer. It can be checked for accuracy and recalibrate if necessary. I have been using these for many years, and we BBQ 2-3 times per week.

Good value and works well

While the dial is small and the numbers on the dial are tiny, it has a built-in magnifier to help with reading it. If your light is overhead, this works well; but if the light is coming in from the side it doesn't work so well, with half the dial in shadow. Also, I wouldn't call it "Instant Read," as they do. You have to leave it in for quite a few seconds, which means either taking your food out of the oven and closing the oven door; or letting a lot of heat into your kitchen while you wait for the needle to stop moving. The dial says "NOT OVEN SAFE" and the listing says the lens/magnifier is plastic; so you can't leave it in the oven with your food. Given The caveats, though, it does work well and I would expect it to do so for many years. The dial reads from 0º - 220º F; so you could use this to check your refrigerator, freezer or even room temp.

I'm sort of obsessed with temp gauges. I have all different kinds. Simple is better.

I ordered this because I hauling produce and truck stops do not sell these anymore. I checked probably 10 different placed. Don't really use this anymore but it's good to have in the truck just incase

Okay, so the positives are that the dial comes in 2 degree increments. There are too many negatives for me, though. First of all, the dial is way too small. Second of all is it's dang hard to recalibrate (but at least you can recalibrate it), Every thermometer should be coming with a recalibration tool. The problem with this one is the recalibration unit is too sensitive. You twist the thing just slightly hoping to adjust it minutely, and It sends the needle way to far in one direction. So you try to turn it back a little and it sends it way too far the other direction. In other words, it's so hard to use, that it makes it a pain to recalibrate. I spent close to an hour (literally), just trying to get it calibrated because of this mess. It makes me wonder if they tested the recalibration unit with real ordinary people. The recalibration unit should NOT be this sensitve. Another issue is that I found out that the little indentations in the shaft are the temperature probes, or something like that (used to actually detect the temperature). It is way too high. If I have a pot of liquid, then it doesn't even reach the temperature probe. This results in inaccuracy in temperature. A lot of time, liquids need to be tested that are very shallow. They should have made it sensitive to temperature along the whole shaft. In fact, most things that I test for temperature don't even reach a 1/4 of an inch! This is ridiculous that they would locate the probes that far up! If you're going to have a probe rather than sensitive along the whole length, then the probe shouldn't be more than 1/16 inch away from the tip. It's also very hard to grip due to the small dial, and it's also hard to see the numbers because of the small dial. Also, the sleeve is hard to slip the thermometer in and out of, not just on the calibration end, but also the storage end. It should not be this tight.

I bought this thermometer specifically because of the instant read claim. While this thermometer is far from instant, it still is much quicker then the other thermometer I was using before. It is quick enough that I can spot check the meat, where my old thermometer wasn't fast enough to do that. This thermometer comes with a pen style case, which is nice. It is pretty small but is still easy to read. Another neat feature is that you can calibrate it if you desire. It's simple and easy to use, and is inexpensive compared to many of the other thermometers out there. Overall, I'm pleased with this, it works and it is somewhat quick. My only complaint is that it is not instant like it claims.

Great!! Esp for $8!! Thank you!! I'm using these thermometers as incubator thermometers for hatching eggs and they are the ONLY accurate and proveably accurate ones I got out of 3 digital thermometer/hygrometer brands. I tested 2 of this brand in frozen ice water and can't complain, read 32-33 degrees. It just takes a while in the environment to read correctly. Really appreciate the red strip mark at 100f for quick visibility. And easy 4 notch marks for 2 degree temp incriment visibility which I need! 100-103 could be life or death with hatching eggs in incubator. Buying more as backups. Thank you, you saved my hatching eggs from the other thermometers lol.

This thermometer is easy to read and sits well in the conditioned air outlets in vehicles. It is accurate and , at the price point I paid, not worth losing any sleep over if it gets broken or lost.
