Fun
This is a great game, my daughter loves it, sometimes the pirate won't pop out with all the swords placed in the barrel, but my husband was able to fix it quite easily. Our 4 year old is able to play the game easily, it would be even better if the pirate said good ole pirate phrases like "shiver my timbers," "Arrgh" or other phrases when he is popped out of the barrel

Simple, fun, and perfect for little ones
My 4-year-old grandson just started getting into games, so we were looking for something age-appropriate—and this was a hit! He loves playing with it, and it’s definitely suitable for younger kids. No assembly required out of the box, which is a win. You just separate the swords from the plastic and you’re good to go. This is actually a rerelease of a game I played when I was a kid, and honestly, not much has changed—which is kind of the charm. Same basic setup, same suspenseful pop. It’s nice to see a classic still holding its own with a new generation. Now, I’ll admit: I had a moment trying to figure out how to get the pirate into the barrel. There are no real instructions aside from a note on the box that says “twist the pirate in place.” Turns out, there’s a notch inside the barrel you need to line up with the base of the pirate—then twist to lock him in. Once I figured that out, smooth sailing. When the pirate pops out, it’s not exactly dramatic—don’t expect him to launch across the room. But for a 4-year-old, it’s just the right amount of surprise, and my grandson laughs every time. No batteries required, which is great. One small downside: there’s no built-in storage for the swords, so you’ll either toss them back in the box, find a little container to keep them together or keep them stuck in the barrel but if you go that route the barrel will not fit back in the box. One note for parents—if you're hesitant about the whole “sticking swords in a barrel to stab a pirate” concept, there are other themed versions out there like Bluey or Super Mario that might feel a bit more playful and less pirate-pokey. Same game, just a different vibe. Overall, it’s a simple, engaging toy that’s perfect for young kids. Great value for the fun it brings!

Fun but a miss on the 'fun'damentals
The game is played exactly as you might suspect. Take turns pushing swords into the barrel until the head pops. OK, it's the suspense that is the fun part. The only complaint I have is in the mechanics of the game. The swords need to be pushed into the barrel with a very minor amount of force until it clicks in place. This is OK as the amount of pressure isn't difficult, but it is hard enough to push the whole barrel. So really, you should use 1 hand to push the sword while the other hand holds the barrel from toppling over. Not a real big deal, but it is what it is. Maybe, at the final pop, while you're holding the barrel, it adds to the surprise. Otherwise, I really like the game and the kids get a real kick out of it too. I can easily recommend this game for fun, and quality of product and value.

Great quick game!
This game is great to play with my 3 year old. It is a quick game so attention span is not an issue and it helps with fine motor skills. The first one we received worked once and then the pirate quit popping but a new one was sent right away.

Fun but doesn't always work
This is a fun little toy, but the pop-up mechanism does not always work. There have been times when we have put swords in every single slot, and the pirate just remains in the barrel.

Buy it.
Fun and simple to use ! Does not require batteries! My child is on the spectrum and she loves this game. She sets it up by herself and we have played it several times. It was bigger than I expected too. (Not in a bad way ) you should get this. It would be a great birthday gift. They can play on their own or with others.

Defective
Defective. It rarely works properly. You can insert all the knives and the pirate often doesn’t pop up at all. It works maybe once every five tries, which makes it pretty much useless.
