The sole is thin but protective of rocks, obviously not made with cushioning for hikes. I wore them first in water with a sandy bottom. Sand does come up through the drainage holes. The liner protects you from most of the sand, but the shoe bottom is an array of waffling that collects sand. When I took out the liner and dried them, sand rained out of them. I don't think there is a water shoe that will keep sand out. I got these to replace water shoes that didn't drain, so I was schlossing around in water weighing them down.
