I purchased the 80cm x 40cm pad in black to protect a new oak desk from knocks, scratches and spills. Initial impressions: it’s a bit plasticky, but the presentation and finish is good and it has a nice texture on it to give that faux leather vibe (note ‘vibe’ not ‘look’ ). It’s double sided like all the best vinyl... It fits on my 120cm x 60cm desk very nicely and has enough space for a 13” laptop, mouse and comfortable writing space. After a few weeks of use it still looks like new and is very easy to clean - a damp cloth is all that is needed. To address a few common complaints I’ve read in the reviews: - it is rolled when delivered so naturally will have some curl when unrolling, it takes nothing more than rolling in the opposite direction and a bit of hand smoothing to get it flat, it took no more than 2 minutes. This may be more of a problem for the smaller pads which will have less weight to them... but even then, I can’t really see it being a long term problem. - the pad does slip on my desk with reasonable lateral force, but then again the surface is a satin smooth, so why would that be a surprise. With the weight of a laptop and other bits and bobs it’s not going to go anywhere, unless you’re an extremely vigorous typer... or mouser... or a bit elbowy when you write. For the money I think you’d struggle to find anything that betters this (apart from other identical rebranded Chinese alternatives) and it does the job well. If it wears quickly or gets damaged, oh well, I’ll buy another. But truthfully I can see this providing a good service for many years. So, yes, I would recommend this. It's the best thing I have ever brought **Q: is it good for gaming?** A: I get what you mean - I would classify it as "OK" for gaming; You need to keep the surface of the desk mat VERY clean to facilitate the mouse sliding over it, otherwise it might offer some resitance. I find it fine for more calm/single player games, but perhaps if you're playing more fast paced games in multiplayer, you want to get a mat that offers less resistance. This really it more of an office oriented product. **Q: Is it heat proof? Can you put a hot coffee mug on it without it leaving damage?** A: Yes it is heat proof. I have got one for my laptop and I regularly put a hot coffee mug on it and it has never damaged it. Great size, great quality and a nice little upgrade for any workspace. 👌🖥️ ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Reliable and durable desk mat *by M***K on 29 November 2025* I previously bought the K Knodel 40cm x 80cm in 2023, and two and a half years later I feel it’s honestly been amazing - no marks, no damage, it still looks new, and it’s kept my desk safe from drinks. I’ve been so confident in the mat that I never even use a drinks coaster; it just remains untarnished. So, I decided to buy the larger 43cm x 120cm version to fill more of my desk space. And for sure, it’s much better having a larger mat - I have more room for my mouse to move and it still feels very similar in terms of durability. However, from what I can see, they’ve changed the material from PU leather to what seems to be a cheaper polyvinyl chloride, which is a real shame. It’s very shiny, a little more slippery with less texture under the mouse (although still good enough), and the black loses that nice matte finish I originally loved. So yes, it’s a worthy upgrade within the same brand of desk mat, but be aware that even though the product link is the same, it doesn’t appear to be exactly the same product it once was. One negative across both mats I’ve owned is the logo. I decided to cover it, and it would be far nicer without one. Most importantly for many people, it’s extremely protective - most liquid left on the mat doesn’t absorb or dissolve, even after days. I wouldn’t buy another brand; I just wish they continued to offer the exact same material.
