Shaan Daal Powder is a true kitchen essential! The blend is aromatic, balanced, and adds an authentic homemade flavor to daal dishes without the need for extra spices. It saves time and brings consistent results every time. Perfect for busy weeknights or when you want something comforting and flavorful with minimal effort. Dal Masala
I'll have to keep looking because I cook for someone on low sodium. Way too much salt. Way too much cayenne. Package says "mild" but had a ton of cayenne & black peppercorn. By the time I kept adding potato, extra vegetables, extra fresh tomato, coconut milk to cut the saltiness a bit. All I could taste was the heat of the pepper still & not much else. At least don't add whole package like I did, maybe less to start & have other fresh herbs, ginger & other things for flavor.

Just what I was hoping for
This was everything that I was looking for -- a new flavor, strong punch, low calorie with a soul-food feeling. Admittedly, I'm not from India or really part of the culture in any meaningful way, but my understanding was the food was powerfully hot and tastes best when the spices are fresh. As a person searching for a new tummy patting bowl of spicy peaceful bliss, this did it for me. Putting the compliments aside, I have some additional information. First, you'll need Mung Beans for this recipe, which fortunately were available at a local Sprouts Farmers Market or via Amazon. I used whole organic mung beans, although the recipe called for split. I skipped the ghee and used a small amount of olive oil (this probably was why my version was flaming hot). My cooking technique wasn't stove top -- instead I used 60 minutes on high pressure for pressure cooking in an InstantPot.

Renamed Daal Masala: Different Name, Same Product
I really love Shan Dal Curry Mix. Only problem is, Shan apparently changed the name and the box so what you see on Amazon is not what you get. The photo shows a Dal Curry Mix box, what you get is labelled Daal Masala (see my photo). When I contacted the vendors they said it's the same thing. So I compared ingredients to the previous curry mix, and they were right. Same ingredients, different names. In my experience, Dal Curry and Dal Masala mixes have always been two completely different spice mixes - the curry generally hotter, more pungent with cumin and turmeric, and the masala - generally sweeter, with dry mango, clove, star anise and nutmeg. So to repeat, Shan Dal Curry Mix is excellent - but it's apparently been renamed: Daal Masala. I've repeatedly told the vendor and Amazon to change the photo. Maybe they will.

Spice up your dal with Shan Dal Masala
Dal Masala by Shan has an ultimate flavor and imparts great taste to almost anything you make out of Toor or chana dal. It's a raw blend (spices bluntly ground and not a complete powder) of all the spices we Indians use in the "tarka" and hence I use this masala while giving tarka to various dals. Dal fry is the best one when added with this masala. Great taste. And a must buy! And can be used almost everywhere!
