Now, I may not be the handiest homeowner on the block, but let me tell you about a game-changer that saved me from a watery disaster: the Schluter Kerdi Waterproofing Membrane! Let's start from the beginning. I made the audacious decision to remodel my bathroom all by myself. Armed with a toolbox full of optimism and only a vague idea of what I was doing, I dove headfirst into the deep end. Little did I know that beneath the surface lurked the potential for a veritable flood of chaos. Enter the Schluter Kerdi Waterproofing Membrane, my savior in a roll! This little wonder transformed my bathroom into a fortress of imperviousness. From the moment I unrolled it, I knew I was in the presence of something special. It's lightweight, flexible, and remarkably easy to work with โ a far cry from the unwieldy materials of yesteryear. Pros: 1. Foolproof Installation: The Schluter Kerdi membrane practically holds your hand during the installation process. Whether you're a DIY rookie like me or a seasoned pro, you can easily cut and shape it to fit any bathroom space. It adheres like nobody's business, creating a seamless barrier against water and moisture. 2. Dependable Waterproofing: When I say waterproof, I mean this stuff laughs in the face of H2O. It's like a superhero cape for your bathroom walls and floors, shielding them from leaks, cracks, and all manner of aquatic calamities. 3. Peace of Mind: Thanks to Schluter Kerdi, I can now confidently belt out my shower songs without fear of damaging the drywall or causing a plumbing nightmare. Simply Amazing
I was an early adopter of Hardi-backer after seeing the after effects of the old cement board systems. I now have used this product a few times and it is amazing. I recently changed the diverters on two different showers. One had Hardi-backer and one Hardi-backer plus the Schluter. Guess which one was the biggest pain to remove the tiles... the Schluter. For me, this is the biggest test of the product. The adhesion was fantastic and I have no concerns of any tile ever falling off the wall as they used to do with older cement board products and I literally can see that this product is waterproof with my test. I lost a small amount of the fiber fabric from the Schulter when removing the tile, but did seemingly nothing to the sheet itself and have plenty of fiber to adhere to another tile too. After 24 hours I tried to rip off the new replacement tile with a lot of force and it did not budge. Installation was a breeze and you can start tiling as soon as you're done putting up the Schluter. It is amazing. Putting up the Schluter added 30 minutes to my install of a 48" x 42 x 96" shower stall. 30 minutes, that is it. That 30 minutes would still be worth it even if you need a 24 hour cure time, but the fact you can start tiling is a no-brainer. The product also has a grid printed on it for basic reference but is no substitute for your eye, a level, and a laser line. This is just a well made, amazing product. I will NEVER install tile without this product including something as innocuous as a backsplash.

Nice product but a pain to install
I used this in my shower and itโs a great product but decided to use paint on membrane in the bathtub and let me tell you it was so much easier. Now that being said I would not use the paint on stuff for a shower pan. This product is the only way to go for a stand up shower

Easy install and will work great.
This was my first time trying the Schulter membrane. I have done a lot of DIY and I wanted to try this because it seems a lot better than traditional ways. The install was pretty easy and I followed instructions on their website and also there are many videos on YouTube about this. Very pleased with how it looks and the durability of the membrane. I still have to complete my curb and the corners and edges but I think this will be great.

South Shore Flooring made it good
Through Amazon, I ordered 108 sq feet of the Kerdi membrane, which should have been about 33 feet long. It came rolled up, of course. When I started cutting it up into sections for my shower stall, I discovered there was only a bit more than 16 feet. Obviously even though I ordered and paid for 108 sq feet, what I received was 54 sq feet. Not happy. Update: I finally looked at the wrapper that was around the roll of membrane. It identifies the roll as 3'3" x 16'5" = 54 ft squared, Item# KERDI200/5M. I should have looked at this wrapper more closely when I opened the package. Somebody screwed up and I didn't catch it when I received the package. Second update: Contacted South Shore Flooring and they promptly made things right. As far as the product goes, so far I have had no problems with it. Works as advertised. All in all, this turned out to be a good experience. Another update: The Kerdi membrane was easy to put up on my shower walls (over cement board) using Versabond mortar (not recommended by Schluter) and the tiles went on over the Kerdi with absolutely no problem, again using Versabond. The shower has been in use now for several months and it looks great. Even more than that, I'm sure no water is getting past that Kerdi membrane. Great product.

Good, but difficult to installl...Next time - Kerdi board
I used this to seal a 3 1/2 by 6 1/2 foot shower with 7 foot walls. 120 sq feet including the floor. I used 1/2 Hardibacker board over the studs and then used the Kerdi membrane over the Hardi. For the floor I make a dry mix mud base and then the Kerdi membrane. I also used the Kerdi drain. Putting this stuff on walls is difficult and time consuming. The hardibacker makes it worse. The hardi sucks up the moisture of the thinset quickly and makes it dry quickly. Gettting the thinset on the walls alone is a pain. They say you can put this over drywall, but I just couldn't bring myself to do that. It would probably be much easier. Fighting air pockets and getting good, thorough adhesion are the major challenges to putting this stuff up. So here are my suggestions. If you are going over hardi - use a mister bottle and mist the hardi deeply before you apply the thinset. Put the thinset on thickly. To me the 1/4" x 3/16" was not enough thinset. It was easier to have too much thinset and push it out at the seams than not having enought and having to peel back the membrane and add more. Cut the sheets no longer than 4-5 linear feet at a time. Don't try to make a corner with the Kerdi. Meet at the corner and use the kerdi band in the corners. It took me about 6-7 hours today to apply Kerdi for the shower described above. Add to that several hours to cut and put up the Hardibacker. Bottom line. This stuff was $1.80 a square foot.. Add to that your thinset and then the hardibacker (and cutting and putting up the Hardi is no picnic) - at almost $1.00 a foot. Almost $3.00 a foot. I found the 1/2 inch Kerdi board for $3.25. If I ever do this again, next time I'll do the Kerdi board. But now that it is done, I'm pretty happy with the outcome.

Easy to create a fantastic shower
Initially I was going to do an old school mud type shower but after looking and listening to plenty of experts in the tile working field I decided to try the Kerdi shower system. I applied the Kerdi directly over drywall per the instructions. I even went ahead and bought the 1/8" square notch trowel. You do have to work fast so the thinset doesn't start to dry before you apply the Kerdi. I precut all the pieces before I started. Then I mixed enough unmodified thinset to do one wall. Dampen the drywall with a sponge before you apply the thinset. Overall the product was pretty easy to use if you follow the instructions. There are some good youtube videos you can find as well. My shower turned out great. I shared pictures so you can check them out in the product pictures.

expensive but great product
Used the kerdi in a 3' x 6' x 9' (height) shower to make it waterproof. It is not cheap, but it works well, bonds well to concrete board, and holds heavy 2'x4' tile without issue. There are other "paint" on waterproofing systems, but I find this product to be easier to work with, take less time to apply and begin tiling after application. To each their own though ...
