Celebrating the Chinese New Year (Chinese Festivals)

Great book

I bought this book for my Great Nephew. My Niece said he really liked it. I give him a book for each Holiday every year.

Ordered this to read in the library during CNY. Nothing negative to post.

Nice way to introduce kids to celebrations from another country.

I wish there wee more explanation to as to why we celebrate Chinese New Year. It basically talks about a girl asking everyone in the family for the reason we celebrate Chinese New Year. Each family member will be a quick answer. For example, brother said it’s because we get red envelops from adults. It didn’t fully explain single people gets them from married couples and why it’s called “lucky money”, etc. My 2 year old drifted off as I was reading the story because it wasn’t that interesting and the pictures aren’t that colorful.

Wonderful book for childcare

I thought the illustrations of the dragons were beautiful but inconsistent with the rest of the illustrations in the book. I noticed the edition I received is different from the one listed. It almost looks like two different editions meshed into one. The story was very simple, didn’t have a good flow, and did not offer much education description of the holiday. The way things were worded was difficult to read, and it used the word “commemorate” instead of celebration which I think is a difficult word to understand for a young toddler. Also there’s a really inappropriate drawing of the sister getting dressed, where she’s in undergarment. I don’t know why such a short book thought it was necessary to depict a young girl getting dressed. There’s other ways to illustrate the point of “wearing new clothes”. I would return this book if it wasn’t basically for $2.

I bought this to read to my preschoolers class for Chinese New Year as she is from China. It gives an interesting history of the holiday but is very scary in the end with the tale of a monster who is chased away by the fireworks they use for the holiday. Very interesting but maybe not for little kids. .

This is the second book I have bought by this author. It is beautifully illustrated and makes a wonderful read for an older child or story time.

These are fantastic books and my 3 year old son wants to read them over and over.

The delivery was very slow and arrived later than expected but the book was in perfect condition. It’s a great story and perfect for sharing CNY traditions with children. Would recommend for parents or teachers ~
