Only a few, small objections
Someone at my local baptist church gave this to me to use for our new baptists class.Overall, I think it is a good book, and there is nothing about its theology that I disagree with. There are three, minor complaints about it I’d like to make here and will do so, using the attached photos.1) CitationsI read this book from beginning to end and came across only one citation of an external source, given on p. 57 (see attached image). As can be seen, it is a URL. The implication is that, unless there is an ebook version of this book available, the reader must type out every one of those characters to see where the information is coming from. No professor I had would have allowed me to cite my sources like this.2) GreekI went to a Christian university and there took a year of Koine Greek. On p. 37 of this book it reads, “Ephesians 4:11 is the only Scripture verse containing the Greek term that translates into our word pastor.” (see attached photo) I did a little research on this and found that the word is ποιμένας (nominative singular: ποιμήν). What Knight and Schroeder write about it is misleading because ποιμήν occurs several times in Scripture, but Ephesians 4:11 is the only verse in Scripture where the King James Bible translators chose the word “pastor” to represent it. (my source is the entry for "ποιμήν" on the Blue Letter Bible website)3) “Fear of God”Nowhere in this book did I find the words “fear of God.” I do not say that the theology of the book denies this, but at least a passing mention of the term and explanation of it I think would have been nice for new converts when they first come across it in English Bible translations. But, although it is not a well-cited book, it seems to me that it is mostly true and well-researched information presented here. Also, Knight and Schroeder are good writers in my estimate.
