does it filter out fluoride?

I have a fluoride hypersensitive adult son with autism who gets headaches within minutes of a fluoridated shower, and that's WITH a typical carbon shower filter.  This filter is the only one I have found that takes enough of the fluoride out for my son to be able to shower.  We have very soft water and the results will be different for those with hard water, but if you follow these protocols that I use, you will get the maximum fluoride and contaminant removal:  1) Shower 4 minutes or less, 2) Use warm, not hot, water to reduce absorption, 3) Keep water pressure as low as it will possibly go for maximum contact time with filtration materials, 4) Change filter every 3 months, not 6 as the manufacturer recommends.  Of course, these recommendations are for my massively fluoride-reactive son, the most vulnerable of those "miner's canaries".  Most people will simply enjoy this filter for the full 6 months, and without all the fuss that we have to do, and will be pleased that it is much more effective than other shower filters.

Is this good for hard water and not simply chlorine?

A shower head filter cannot soften water (remove hard water minerals). It's easy to confirm this by using a hard water test kit. The only way to get soft water in a shower is to install either a whole house water softener or the "ShowerStick" shower water softener made by WaterSticks (watersticks.com). You won't get the results you're looking for unless you remove the hard water minerals.

Does the filter affect the water pressure?

No, not at first, but as the filter fills with things it filters the pressure decreases. You will need to change it out routinely depending on your water.

Can I use my own handheld showerhead in place of the one that comes with it?

I believe its the shower head that attaches to the filter has a smaller connection than your hand held.
