Works better than an upright in some instances...
I purchased my Spotclean on Amazon over a year ago (6/2013). It has worked almost flawlessly for my intended purpose. I use it to clean my carpeted stairs, stained carpet areas, upholstered chairs, and even my car interior rugs. I also just used my Spotclean to 'clean' up the mess left behind by my decrepit Bissell Proheat 2X steam cleaner. It had left awful dirt streaks everywhere. With the help of my 3 year old, we used the Spotclean to clean up the dirt streaks. The SpotClean is relatively easy to use and requires a little less effort to pull out, assemble and clean up than my Bissell Proheat 2X (which is being replaced). The suction on the hand tool is excellent. However, it DOES require a bit of hand force to extract the water. I don't mind because I want the area to dry quicker. Also, you will have to use your hand to scrub the carpet a bit if your stain is stubborn. I think some people may have unrealistic expectations concerning these machines. A hand tool does require your 'hand'. So, I consider these efforts minimal to achieve my desired results. The SpotClean has cleaned approximately 90% of the stains I have attempted to clean. I have a husband, 3 teenagers, a 3 year old, and a Cairn Terrier. So, I consider this a small feat. I have NOT used it to clean blood, wine, or ink. I really need to get a new upright steam cleaner because I can always tell where I've used my SpotClean because the area is lighter than the surrounding carpet. This is because the SpotClean did its job. The SpotClean is compact and easy to move around. It is compact enough to sit on standard stairs without toppling over. It has a bit of weight when the chambers are filled but not enough to cause fatigue by my standards. I am a 5'3 woman, and I don't lift weights. Some mentioned the desire for a longer hose and a retractable and/or longer cord. However, I think the hose length is adequate since you can easily move the SpotClean from Point A to Point B. If it is too long, then it is unmanageable to re-coil, then you would have another set of complaints from people. Also, if the cord length was longer, it would take more time than I care to spend to wrap it up. A retract feature would be one more thing to break and then we would really complain. Regarding the noise, it is louder than I would prefer but it may be just as loud as a standard vacuum cleaner. It does not bother me enough to do sound comparisons since I am just cleaning spots. I think the SpotClean cleans a decent area on one fill up. I admit, I do more 'area' cleaning than spot cleaning sometimes. Once you have taken the time to pull it out and assemble, you want to clean ALL the spots you see. If you are doing a full set of stairs, it will definitely require 2 fill ups. I pour the dirty water down the toilet instead of my laundry sink. I recommend rinsing the hand tool and the water chambers when you finish a job. I try to let the chambers dry overnight before re-assembling to put away. However, I have left the water chamber with the cleaning solution and water between uses without any problems. You will also need to spot check for lint build up on the red filter that is covered by the water chamber. You can wipe off the lint easily. These are all just precautionary steps to reduce 'yuck' build-up and musty smells. Remember that carpet cleaning is a dirty job. No matter how convenient the machine is, we still have to clean the filth collected from our handy little devices. My last recommendation is to use the recommended Bissell cleaning solution. It smells wonderful!!!! A little is all you need. Do not use more than recommended. As a matter of fact, I use a little less because I do not want excess shampoo in my carpet.

Great machine for it's intended purpose
Bought this a few months ago for pet stains. it works extremely well. In fact I don't even let my dogs out now. I just clean the carpet every morning. No seriously, I had been using my shop vac and it was a pain to empty and clean it before and drain and clean it after and it didn't do a great job. Before I buy anything I always read the one star reviews first. I find those most valuable when selecting a product and some of those reviewers made good points. But first, using this machine for ITS PURPOSE will dispense most all of the negative comments. It is not for cleaning an entire room, area rug or staircase, however I have used it to lightly clean some of mine. It is designed for doing spot cleaning period. It doesn't need a longer hose, hold more water or need more suction. What it does well is dispense the right amount of water and suck it out just right. It is a well engineered balance. As far as one of it's alleged flaws I can't imagine how the hose will break while stored, as one of the reviewers stated, unless you cram it into a stuffed closet or cluttered garage. Here's why I am sold on this machine. When you have a pet stain and use one of the spray carpet cleaners or products that neutralize urine, they always leave soap behind that attracts dirt back into the carpet. And I recommend pre-treating with one of those first if you can. Using this machine AFTER you have treated the area with one of those products is what will really keep the carpet clean. I find that I don't have to clean them professionally quite as often. Which saves money. This machine has paid for itself. I find that using just plain hot water to remove the soaps from the spot cleaning products works best. Just work it into the area until you see that there is no more foam or bubbles coming out. I don't take it out after each event. I treat the stains with Natures Miracle or like products I will accrue a few treatments and then take out the machine and clean them all at once later. (I have 4 dogs and 2 were puppies. They're grown now so i don't have many problem now.) You can use their soap, but you are then adding more soap onto the carpet. It's ok to use soap for non pet stain general cleaning, but don't use more than recommended. Use less! This is a very well designed machine. You don't need any fancy models which "automatically" clean. Waste of money. Just buy this one and do as I say. Your mother will be watching you :)

Very happy with this machine. Gets rental machine results in a small compact package. Loud though.
A carpet cleaner needs to do two things: 1. Spray a controlled stream of cleaning solution onto/ into the carpet 2. Suck that solution along with any dirt, back out of the carpet This machine does both of those things well. It is intended as a small portable cleaner to spot clean as the name implies, but can practically be used to clean entire small rugs as well. It is small and portable and easily fits in my cleaning supply closet. I would not want to try to use it to do a whole room's wall to wall carpet, the suction hose is too short and the tank capacity is too small. You could absolutely do it and get great results but it would be a lot of uncomfortable work. Better to rent a commercial machine for that. Takes only a minute or so to fill and set up, so you can clean spills as they happen before they soak in, set and dry. So far (received it yesterday) I have cleaned two 5 x 7 area rugs. Each took about 30 minutes to do (getting as much soiled liquid back out of the fibers is the most important and time consuming part). Pre-treated obvious stains with Shout laundry pre-treater, then used the Bissell as instructed. Bottom line, both rugs are spotless and as new. Colors are again vibrant and clear. Probably will take 2 days or so for both to dry completely, then I'll vacuum to re-align the fibers. I may try OxyClean as the pre-treat in the future, though the Shout worked perfectly. The most satisfying part of using machines like this is dumping the soiled water down the sink. "Man, all of that brown gunk came out of my carpet?" Then you look at your refreshed, bright, clean rug or carpet satisfied with a job well done. The room looks brighter and the air smells cleaner. As I am a bachelor, my standard MO prior was to buy area rugs for $100 or less every 6 months or so. Nice enough looking but not too expensive, because I inevitably get spots and stains on them and just leave them on the curb for trash collection and replace them as needed. Red wine, food spilled, etc. I have 4 or 5 of them throughout the house. I had two such stained rugs rolled up in a closet that I've been meaning to toss, but instead bought this unit and cleaned them back to like-new condition. With this one purchase and 1 hour of effort, I saved myself about $200 in new carpet purchase which more than paid for the cleaner. I'd call that money well spent. One potential downside is that it is pretty loud- louder than a standard vacuum cleaner. You would really have to raise your voice to have a conversation above it. The motor's exhaust is on one side of the cleaner, so you can point if away from you to reduce the noise, but I'll probably use earplugs in the future just to reduce the nuisance factor. By design, you have to kneel down next to it no more than 3 ft away. 2 year manufacturer warranty means that Bissell stands behind it, which speaks volumes to me in this "offshore cheap manufacture" world we live in now.

Best of it's Competitor Machines
After a loooooot of research and review reading, I decided to buy this for our soiled white (yes white--we haven't any kids) carpet on our stairs. It was easy to use straight out of the box--I did read the book that came with it--but unless you are a complete moron, it's easy to quickly figure out. I like the length of the power cord, which allowed me to do the lower staircase from the landing to the bottom stair without changing outlets. And CLEANING--most excellent--I was shocked by the amount of filth in the dirty water collection tank (our carpet is 8 months old)! The hose length was very good, especially if you're doing it one stair at a time, you can easily avoid stretching the hose too much. Finally, the suction is really great and doesn't seem to clog at all (I'd read some reviews that claimed this had the best suction out of the other brands and I read some reviews that claimed this machine will clog if you push down too hard. I have not had this experience at ALL). Our carpet looks brand new and I'm SO glad I chose this machine over the other brand. Of the negatives--I cannot believe people give this ONE star because the hose is a bit fragile--I mean, there's SO much more to the machine. Just wind the hose somewhat loosely and you shouldn't have problems. Another, somewhat negative, issue is limited to my husband's personal opinion that it left the carpeting fairly wet. Now, I've used a lot of steam cleaners and they ALL leave the carpet fairly wet, so--not really an issue. And finally, a minor complaint is that, when you fill the soap and water tank and replace the cap as tightly as possible--it still drips until you get it back into the machine. All very minor things. I have to say, this is your best option when choosing a spot-cleaner. It's fairly priced, works REALLY well and really takes care of even deep dirt in carpet. I have not used this on upholstery, but wouldn't hesitate to--it's that good.

Small unit but has sufficient power for spot treatment and upholstery
My primary reason for purchasing this unit was to cleanup occasional pet messes for our two cats (hairballs, vomit, urine). I am so far pleased with the power, performance and portability of this cleaner. I would caution against smaller machines, as their motor power which is about half this Bissell unit clearly won't have sufficient suction. This machine will pull the vast majority of the water/cleaner you deploy with the sprayer, so it will not leave carpets soaking wet. The nozzle attachment has a nice clear window of the suction action, so you can easily tell when cleaning solution and soil is being pulled up into the vacuum. The size of the tanks are well proportioned, allowing you to cover a decent sized cleaning project without multiple refills. I read in other reviews that users have had issues with the durability of the hose, especially at connection points with the vacuum and the attachments. I am taking care not to overly stress these areas...but I also think some of the negative posts are over-rated. Clearly if you handle the equipment in a rough manner, you will prematurely wear and break the hose. This isn't a stretch hose, so pulling on it with excess force or trying to expand it beyond its actual length is going to break it (your fault, not the machine's). Also, I can tell from some posts/pictures, the users did not take care to keep the machine clean after use and likely also stored the machine without allowing parts to dry. I'd fault the user/owner for improper care in that regard and not fault the equipment. Like any tool or appliance, if you take proper care of the equipment and follow manufacturer guidance (aka READ THE MANUAL), you'll avoid these premature breakage situations. Bissell clearly instructs owner to run clean water through the machine after use, clean components and stow away when dried. If you will be too lazy to do this then that is on you. In closing, this is a quality machine that will perform well for smaller, targeted jobs...which is entirely what it's intended to do and within its designed purpose. It is accurately represented in the manufacturer details. It's got a functional and logical design. Fair purchase value.

Impressed!
My home has 4 dogs, two cats, and three birds. We have 5 and 7 year olds as well. We have hardwood floors with multiple smaller rugs and an area rug that we clean and launder often, which is a pain. We also switched from leather furniture to cloth upholstery last year for affordability (our leather couch and chair was fabulous, but contemporary and small, as well as 11 years old). With needing to do some rug cleaning and the couch, I started doing research and found this gem. We didn't need a full blown carpet cleaner but something that could work to clean the couch and loveseat along with the rugs (spot cleaning as needed is a bonus). I tested this out on two items thus far and am impressed! I cleaned a rug that sits under my kids table in the kitchen; the kids play and do crafts at this table, play with sand, playdoh, paint, they eat dinner, spill their chocolate milk etc. I figured this was the most dirty and the lightest colored rug I own, so it was time for a clean. It's a 3x4ft rug that normally gets thrown in the wash with minimal results. It also had playdoh and silly putty stuck to it. I also tested it on my loveseat (totally grossed out by how dirty it was). The rug took me maybe 10 minutes to clean. It combined with a bit of scrubbing and the included cleaner removed the playdoh. The love seat took about 45 minutes and that didn't include all surfaces. I found it easy to use/set up and intuitive. The plug in cord is nice and long. I didnt particularly find the cleaning hose very long (though I'm used to a vacuum and not a spot cleaner) and think an additional foot would have been nice. I had the machine sitting on the floor and cleaning the top of the couch on the back was a bit annoying due to some tension from the hose being a bit short. I found the the bristles on the brush to be useful for quick cleaning but I think spraying down the rug/furniture and using a bigger carpet brush is easier and would take less time. Again, for portability though, not bad. I cleaned my couch and rug with the 6" brush but I'll probably use a separate I already have for ease of use and surface area. A note for the animal hair: sweep first, spray and then use down motions. I found this effective but noticed some of the hair was still hanging in the head of the nozzle and being redistributed back onto the couch. I grabbed a bowl of water that the cleaner head fit into and sucked up clean water to flush the hair, that did the trick! Lastly, I tried both the heavy duty cleaner sample included and the pet odor remover. The odor remover had a strong scent, but was not over powering. They smell similar to generic fabric softener. I don't mind the scent. Unscented would be a great option but the cleaner worked well so I don't mind. I can't wait to finish cleaning my living room! It's fun to use and is like the indoor equivalent of power washing your furniture and rugs!

You (may) Never Need to Buy Another Hose Again! (My Easy Tip)
Ever since hand held rug cleaners were put on the market I believed I've always had one, and this one by far is the best I have yet owned! Let me get straight to the point of my header because that's why you're reading this review! It's been my experience that it doesn't matter what make or model portable rug/upholstery cleaners in in terms of your hose & nozzle head getting clogged. Especially I f you own pets, fur is going to jam it up every time. It also doesn't matter If you are cleaning a runner or a large area rug. It's just the nature of the beast. Nozzle heads usually don't need replacing but they get gross & I've tried everything to clean them. Then often you will find that if you can find a hose that the manufacturer hasn't discontinued, good for you! If not, it is expensive. I figured this tip out years ago when my husband & I could not even afford a hose. We took the whole machine apart. Not only was the base of the hose clogged with fur & other gunk, it extended far into the interior. So, if you think replacing the hose will completely solve your problem, think again. We then of course killed the machine! So far, for over at least ten years this has been MY full proof method. Before you begin cleaning, fill a bucket with tap water, cold or hot. If you don't have the strength to carry that like me, just fill it 1/4 of the way & refill 1/4 of the way & add water when needed. As you are cleaning, every 5 minutes are so, put the nozzle into the bucket of water and make sure it is running freely through the hose. If it's not, keep pumping water through until it does. After you clean your rug, do it once more. This little bit of upkeep will save you money and a ton of frustration. As to this Bissel, many of you probably don't understand why others rave about the solution tank having a flat bottom. Once you've had flat, you never go back! This machine has great suction. Don't stop passing over the area once you no longer see the foam, that's when you will really see the dirt come up! It's design makes it very compact which makes it easy to store and pleasant to look at! One last tip. I purchased the kit for pets. Because of what they track inside, I use both pretreatment solutions. I have been using about 1/3 of the recommended amount of shampoo. By using all 3, your rug will definitely get clean & definitely save you a lot of time sucking up foam. For such messes, I recommend hot water for both the tank & the bucket for obvious reasons! I highly recommend this Bissel SpotClean for upholstery and small to medium rugs!

Great For Spills and General Cleaning
I purchased this product as it had gone on sale for a brief moment and had been needing a Portable Carpet Cleaner for my house. We have a dog and a small child so messes and spills are abundant, especially when the entire house has carpet. This is great for when something is spilled on the carpet as I can grab it and have it cleaned up in less than 5 minutes. I usually keep some water in at all times just in case to quickly suck up a spill or clean a mess up. Pros - 1. Very easy to use - I am able to have it full of hot water with cleaner in just a few minutes, the power cord is very long so that eliminates having to use a extension cord, the vacuum hose and two heads work very well and are a great length. 2. Maintenance - After every use I will be sure to empty the dirty water out, clean the vacuum head out with clean water, and if I used for for a while I will turn it on and run clean water straight through the vacuum hose to remove dirt and dog hair from it. 3. Storage - I think the biggest benefit of this product is how the power cord and vacuum hose are stored, there is no way that they are able to come unraveled or loose when it is put up. 4. Cleaning Ability - I have used this multiple times to clean spills from drinks, food, or when the dog has an accident. I have not had an issues with it not being able to clean it up and remove the spill or stain. If it is something that has had time to dry, I will spray it with cleaner and let it soak a few minutes, then use this on it. 5. The other reason I purchased this product is to help when cleaning vehicle upholstery like seats and carpet. The smaller vacuum head is perfect for this as I am able to get into the smaller spaces of the cars and clean the carpets and seats with it. Cons - 1. The only con is that sometimes the clean water container will leak if it is not seated properly in the unit, not a huge deal as it is clean water, but still something that can get annoying. However, this is something that does not take away from the ability of unit. 2. It does come with two vacuum heads, however, I am only able to store on head on it easily. I could keep the smaller head in the dirty water container, but end up just sitting it on top of it. But this is a minor thing. Overall, this is a great unit to have on hand for easy clean up of spills on carpet for furniture or to be used in a vehicle.
