Excelent device
I have owned multiple of these devices. Each one I have owned was for work and each one was passed on to a co-worker when their old laptop that had an RS-232 port died or when their USB to RS-232 adapter failed. Some of these failed adapters my co-workers used did not work because windows was not able to load drivers automatically. Instead of searching for proper drivers I pulled this device out of my tool bag, plugged it in and they were able to use it within a few minutes with no searching and no trouble on any windows PC I have tried(XP, Vista and 7). The only thing I recomend would be to get a good USB extension cable with it as the small 3 foot one is to short for some situations, if you wont need anything longer the cable did work. I also recomend getting all the adapters you need for this to work for multiple interfaces, the three I purchased were the gender changes (both types) and a NULL modem adapter. I had to get two gender changes for situations where I needed some extra lenth at the RS232 end. But why I still give this 5 stars is for the fact that it doesnt have the female screw down ends on it, so it works with one particular piece of equiment we have that has the female screwdown lugs on it, they dont mesh up if you have two female sets of lugs on them and you have to take them off of the adapter.

Worked, briefly
This adapter installed automatically under Windows 7 64 bit without any problems. However, it behaves strangely when continuously transferring a lot of data- I think this may have to do with the lack of asynchronicity mentioned in another review. This was tolerable until it stopped being recognized, and started getting very hot to the touch. I unplugged, rebooted, tried again, and had the same result- Windows didn't recognize that a device of any kind had been plugged into the usb port, and the device got very hot. I'm still giving three stars because I think that I either got a lemon, or static discharged it to death.

Great Little Device
I use this on my Windows 7 laptop when I needed to interface with an old Garmin Etrex GPS unit. I use it for taking some measurements in laying out fiber and wireless plans in New Hampshire to get a rough estimates o0f system layouts and I decided to use my old TROPO software as well rather than buying and installing the new software. It was installed instantly under Windows 7 and operated flawlessly. This is a very inexpensive way to keep some older equipment and software around. It installed so seamlessly that I was surprised since I did not even need the disk. That is one of the better features of Windows 7. My only advice is be sure to remember what COM Port was installed, it was COM 4 on my system so I had to rest the TOPO software.

Gets the job done.
I bought this to install onto a Vista 64-bit system. I plugged it in and initially tried to use the included mini CD-ROM to load the drivers, but for some reason my DVD drive couldn't read it. So I let Vista find the drivers automatically and it installed the drivers easily. But it wouldn't work. I tried re-installing the driver, unplugging it and plugging it back in, but my computer still couldn't find the COM port. I finally rebooted my computer, and ever since then, this adapter has worked perfectly with no issues. It would've given it 5 stars if the driver installation had gone smoother. Other than that it works perfectly and I'm totally satisfied.

Great for comms to legacy serial devices
I'm a controls engineer and frequently have to program legacy devices such as motion controllers and PLC's that have only a serial (RS232) interface. I've tried many such products, and this has been by far the most reliable across the board to allow my newish Dell (with no 9-pin) to talk to legacy serial devices. Some examples of where I have used these are various Parker drives and controllers (6104, 6250, 6K, Gemini, Aries, Compax3, etc), Galil motion controllers, Unitronics PLC's, Mitsubishi FX and Q PLC's and MRJ2/J2S servo drives, Siemens LOGO, and many others. The device is VMWare friendly (simple to detach from host and use in an XP VM). I have one in each tech bag, and highly recommend them for those in need of RS232 comms to older devices.

Company out of business NO DRIVER AVAILABLE
While the device is nice, since the company is not available on line..either are the drivers. Some FDTI drivers allow this to work, but not with full functionality. Good luck if you purchase this one.

OK for must uses - but still not a real UART
First and foremost, this comm port was up and running on my windows 7 64-bit platform with no needed for the included CD - drivers were downloaded by Windows - terrific! But, if you are looking for a serial device that supports asynchronous i/o and can reliably signal when the serial data has been transmitted - look elsewhere. This hardware/driver combination provides no mechanism to let you know when the physical transmission has actually completed.

Velleman 8048 - A great test
The Velleman 8048 is a Microchip PIC Programmer. This programmer is renowned for NOT working with USB to Serial Converters. A quick check of their forums will let you know that. (A LOT of upset customers saying I have a USB-Serial converter and my programmer doesn't work! Velleman replies - This product DOES NOT work with Converters) Most new computers do not come supplied with a 9-pin serial connection anymore, and mine didn't either. So after purchasing the Velleman and soldering it together, I found in the manual "Does NOT work with USB-Serial Converters". Well I doesn't work with 99% of them. However, this USB converter is so true to actual rs-232, it works great with it. This is a microchip programmer, if it works with this, it should work with anything requiring a serial port. VERY, VERY, happy with the purchace. By the way, It comes with a USB extension cable.
