Pregnant and investigating a murder on a sacred isle where no one can die or be born. What could wrong?
Diotima is pregnant and shes been selected by the goddess to present Athens gift to the temple at Delos. And by pregnant I mean ready to deliver any time now, so perfect time to go to an island where birth and dying are forbidden. Oh and just to be more exciting Pericles is there to move the treasury of the Delian League to Athens as a protective measure albeit unilateral. The High Priest is not convinced, but the second ranking priest puts up a huge fuss and there is nearly a riot. Nico is sent to bribe the man, but when he goes back to pay him off the old priest is murdered. Everyone suspects Nico and Diotima is hired by the High Priest to investigate. Things get very complicated very fast. Great way to get some history and an interesting twist makes a historical mystery have an intriguing answer.

New Challenges for Nico & Diotima
Another excellent Athenian mystery by Gary Corbey. Diotima is very pregnant yet she is named the lead investigator in a murder of a priest. Initially she gives Nickolas a hard time even asking if he committed the murder. Eventually they move forward on a joint investigation. Her pregnancy slows down the investigation, but our intrepid heroes plod on. The history is interesting and Nico and Diotima remain engaging.Only 4 stars because the conclusion becomes chaotic with an Agatha Christie presentation , pirates, and the birth. The identity of the killer becomes secondary to the chaos

Always a pleasure.
This series is always a pleasure to read! Corby writes with the details of a Greek scholar and can turn those dry, dusty facts into a very human and humorous tale. I love the explanations at the end. I hope to read about Nico and Diotima for years to come.

Seventh adventure for Nico and Ditoma
Sent to an island of priests and priestesses. It is illegal to give birth or die on this sacred isle. Of course our favorite investigators manage to be tangled in the breaking of both prohibitions. Gary Corby is a terrific writer. He weaves historical fact with with a believable and intriguing story.

Neat mystery in Ancient Greece
I liked all of Gary Corby's Greek mysteries. Plot is nonobvious, characters are well drawn.

Another thrilling Athenian mystery
This might be Gary Corby's best yet! A gripping tale of murder, thievery and mayhem intertwined with enough history to keep it real. I do miss Socrates though.

The Great Delos Mystery
This is the second Athenian Mystery I’ve read and I enjoyed them both – this one a bit more. The previous book I read, ‘The Singer From Memphis’ had more action but the interaction between Nico and his historically significant wife, Diotima, was greater in this outing giving the book a touch of ancient Nick and Nora.Diotima, as a priestess of Artemis, fits in well with the island of Delos, which is both a treasury for the Delian League (an alliance of about 150 states) and a holy place being the birthplace of the twins, Apollo and Artemis. Initially, Nico, an agent for Pericles, seems just along for the ride. For some apparently arbitrary reason, you’re not allowed to die or be born on the island. Pericles, Diotima, Nico and others show up with a huge fleet to move the treasury off island ostensibly to a safer locale. The priesthood objects but before much can proceed, the second in charge priest is found murdered.Pericles, realizing his plans to grab the treasure up won’t move ahead until the murderer is found assigns Nico and Diotima to the case. The majority of the book is an ancient mystery procedural which moves along at a nice pace wrapping up to a satisfactory conclusion that includes a good deal of action and some losses. What I enjoyed here and in the previous novel is the slice of ancient (about 450 BC) life incorporated into a novel. I was previously impressed at how well the author weaves his both real and fictional characters into actual events of the times. I felt that way here too although I was a bit let down by some of the characters popping up with modern sensibilities. That was rare though and to my knowing, the author does not throw in some anachronistic technology or event. There really was a Diotima (played a role in Plato’s Symposium) Pericles, Delos and Delian League. At this time there was a persistent war between the cities of Greece and Persia with Persia getting naval support from Phoenicians. The author finishes with an extensive afterward detailing what’s real, not so real and what may be real about the narrative. The story is exciting, the solution a real mystery novel solution, the people are believable and the protagonists quite likable. If you like a mystery or enjoy historical fiction or have an interest in ancient Greece or any and all of the above, this one will hit your spot. I’m ready for more Nick and Nora of 2,500 years ago.

A Very Enjoyable Historical Greek Mystery!
This entertaining book by the Australian author Gary Corby is the 7th volume in the exciting Athenian mystery series. The historical details concerning this Classical Greek period are very well researched and explained by the author in his Author's Note and Glossary, which you can find at the end of the book.At the beginning of the book you'll find an important list of Actors featuring in this tale, and not to forget a nice map of the Sacred Isle of Delos.Storytelling is of a very good quality and brought to us with a lot of humour by the author, the storyline is well worked out, and all the characters come splendidly to life within this exciting murder story. This story is set in the year 454 BC, and it will take our main characters, the fictional Nicolaos, and his wife, the real historical Priestess Diotima, to the Sacred Isle of Delos.Delos is the home to the military fund of the Delian League, an alliance of city-states that defended and still defends Greece from the Persians, and that treasury is wanted by the real historical charismatic Athenian statesman Pericles, and its he who assigns Nico to try to bribe the leader of the resistance, Geros, so that Pericles finally can take that money back to Athens and safety. All at once there's the murder of this same man Geros, and Nico must try hard, under the lead of his heavy pregnant wife Diotima, who's appointed as lead investigator by Anaxinos, the head-priest of Delos, to solve this murder, and what will follow is a mystery with quite a few twists and turns, and certainly with unexpected developments, that will finally end with a very surprising verdict for Diotima and Nico to bring to all at the Island of Delos.Highly recommended, for this is an Ancient Greek mystery series at its best, and that's why I call this book: "A Very Enjoyable Historical Greek Mystery"!
