Best content, different cover
I ordered a hard cover, which came as a black cover, like what usually appears in the library, instead of the one showed in the picture. Anyway, the content is great. It's of help for economics phds and profs.

Extremely useful read - although Thomson mostly deals with the issues of a young THEORIST, and hardly gets into advice for empiricists.

Great!
Very interesting and useful book for PhD and master students. Although the focus is a bit biased to U.S. experience, most of advices are relevant for studying in any country.

Only for theoretical microeconomists
The author is himself a theoretical microeconomist and therefore has too little to say for other fields as much emphasis is put on how to set up models for theoretical micro models. The book is very brief and superficial on most topics and the broad guidelines are hardly surprising nor of great value. Plus the authors arrogance can be felt throughout the book which is very annoying.2 Stars because at least some of the guidance is of use. But overall, no recommendation.
