Simply put the hook IN FRONT OF the buckle and you will be good to go. To release, simply unhook. No need to unbuckle, just unhook. Don't send them back because you don't know how to close them. The strap is intentional. Seller was willing to sell me an additional pair at a discount or have me pay to ship the original shoes to China at my expense (which is strange because the package arrived from California). I ended up keeping them rather than losing more money, so they sit in my house unworn.They are beautiful shoes, though.
