Made my little bonsai happy 😊
I bought this soil for a little bonsai tree I rescued on the clearance rack at Lowe's. I don't know anything about bonsai trees so I just started researching and this soil is what I found. I have to say this soil is fantastic, it is a very good quality, the mix is exactly the way it should look and be. The contents of the bag fit perfectly in my little pot so it was spot on in the amount that you get. It drains easily and does not hold water around your tree's root system. It look like there was a perfect mix of dirt, bark, etc. I think it was a great value for my money, and although I don't know a whole lot about bonsai trees, I do know that my little bonsai tree is doing fantastic now and I'm glad I rescued it.

Perfect for Bonsai
Repotted my tree and it’s thriving. It loves this soil. There were only a few larger pieces that I saw in this mix. Drains well. Definitely a specialty mix, not your typical potting soil.

Possibly came with scales (parasites)
The soil seems great and was just enough to replant my ginseng ficus bonsai, plus some. Not much left though, so buy another bag if you are repotting larger than what you see in my photos as I didn’t have much left after this. The soil was not very dry and seemed pretty healthy enough. My bonsai first seemed fine. PROBLEM: While this COULD have existed before the repotting (so I am not giving this 2 stars because I just don’t know…), I noticed leaf drops about a week later. Upon closer inspection and researching like crazy, I found scales. These are a parasite and are killing my poor bonsai. The leaves have sap on them (not normal), and the branches are growing brown (not normal). Leaves dropped but did not go yellow. I know I’m cleaning off scales from the branches but this one from a leaf might have been something else. I haven’t seen more of these. I also found another insect but it was not a scale and I’m not sure if it another dangerous parasite. It’s on the dropped leaf that did turn yellowish but that was early on and I haven’t seen any others, just that one. My bonsai has lost at least 8 or 9 leaves since I repotted him, and that was about 4 weeks ago. Some leaves are drooping badly now. I don’t know what happened. I had spent a lot of time going through reviews of soil before buying this one. At this point, I probably would recommend spending a little more money for something you have more certainty in. I think I saved a few bucks going for this one but still felt comfortable on the good reviews this had. Next time, I will spend more to keep my bonsai safe as I care a lot to keep him doing well. I am now going to spend a lot trying to buy insecticides or something to fix this mess, meanwhile he has lost so many leaves and I had to cut a branch that I accidentally bent from trying to wipe off the little buggers by hand with an alcohol wipe while waiting for the materials to come in. It’s just a mess. Maybe you will get a good batch. But that’s what I went through. You can see how he started, and the photo of him by the lamp is him today.
