Review: THIS is what your bird should be eating!!! I want to give the company a hug! - To all bird owners: Please please please know that most of the bird pellets and seed mixes pet stores sell and bird owners are told to feed their birds are not good for birds. They are high in fat, often rancid or have old seeds and fungus/dust that hurts birds, and often include soybean oil, sugar, flavoring and synthetic vitamins that birds were never made to digest or live on. Yeah they're cheap but they are not bird food. When I found this brand, saw the ingredients, and then received a fresh product that my birds instantly loved, I wanted to write a love letter to the company and send a bag of this to every bird owner on the planet. Seriously. I probably should have calmed down before I wrote this review. More details: The "mini" size is perfect for smaller conures, lovebirds, cockatiels, and parakeets because you can break up the larger pieces if they don't. My birds break them up on their own so I didn't find the pellets too long but you can also soften them if your bird is used to wet foods. I would say the mini size could go up to most smaller conures as well like Sun conures, pineapple, etc. I try to feed my birds (parakeets, cockatiels, conures, love birds, and up) mostly sprouted grains like wild rice, quinoa, mung bean, lentils, wheat berries, etc, along with a constant supply of organic leafy greens and fruit (the ratio depends on the species) with FRESH seeds (not old, rancid ones found in bird seed mixes) only as a treat or during times when they need more calories. (PSA: please don't feed your bird peanuts.) I know very few bird owners have that type of time or OCD but I know just giving birds seed and old colored, "fruit" flavored pellets is not right and leads to health issues and eventually pain and suffering for both you and your birds. This routine of constantly preparing, sprouting, storing, and replacing wet food throughout the day before it goes bad is difficult to keep up for most people and hard to ensure a pet sitter will do if you go away. It also can create nutrient gaps if your bird is picky and will only eat certain fresh foods. (And most pet store birds won't even try fresh food because they were never shown what was edible beyond seed and need a flock or a very patient, dedicated owner to do that for them.) This brand of food has EXACTLY what I was searching for to remedy the above issues. AND it's fresh. AND my birds actually eat it and don't waste half of it like they would cheaper mixes. Yes, there will be "hulls" or crumbs left behind because birds are used to hulling their food but comparatively, they consume more of this than other brands where they just pick out the millet and canary seed and leave everything else (smaller birds, that is). All in all, you actually get more bang for your buck with this because it's so much more nutrient packed and high quality than cheap brands (I'm looking at you, Kaytee). Trust me, even as someone who chronically counts every penny I spend, THIS food is worth it! To the company: I love you, I appreciate you, please do not change this product in favor of cutting costs and making more money off consumers by using cheaper ingredients.
Review: I feed this to my worst enemy & she loves it! - So I didn't know what size to get initially bc this is listed for large parrots, but my senegal likes to hold her food to eat it, and the small (really medium in the line I think) seemed possibly too small to do that for her. This was for sure a good decision. To preface, my bird may be the grumpiest bird I have ever seen in my life whose #1 pastime is ruining my life and laughing about it (its more of an evil cackle honestly). She is incredibly picky on another level, and its been harrowing trying to switch her to a healthier pellet over the years from the rainbow zupreem she's been eating since weaning 9 years ago. Recently though, I was looking over zupreems ingredient list, and its literally corn, soy meal, and freaking sugar!!! Why is sugar even an ingredient in there???? Anyways my senegal, who once stole a bite of my yogurt 7 years ago, and has since decided I am trying to poison her with new foods, watched me put some Tops into her breakfast bowl the morning we got it, proceeded to scream complain at me about it/growl, but then ate every tops pellet and not a single zupreem. I literally cannot believe it. It can take months to get her to take a single tongue lick of a new food and she just ate this stuff immediately and has had it for breakfast and dinner since (about 3 meals so far). I'm just in shock... I tried to give this hell spawn Harrisons for years on advice of seemingly all bird people and she refused to eat it opting at points to go on food strikes instead of just trying a new pellet for literal survival... I once watched her pick a turd off a perch instead of tasting a single Harrisons pellet again. These Tops pellets smell really good too which makes me wonder if that in part had to do with her trying it immediately. I also made sure to tell her NOT to touch them to ensure she would at least go near them in an effort to annoy me (definitely worked, she ate them while staring at me). I did put most of them into a zip lock to put in the freezer to keep fresh.... this pellet is unbelievably promising. If you also own a spawn of hell, this pellet is really worth giving a shot. I don't know if this will help her hateful personality, but I do think it's likely to keep her screaming at me for years to come. The best advice I ever got, albeit later than I'd like to admit, was looking at the ingredient list on my birds pellets, and if your bird eats rainbow zupreem, wow that stuff is trash, but apparently tops is more tasty thank God! My bird also eats too many nutriberries for treats than I should probably be giving her, and I now believe this is contributing to very hormonal behaviour based on what I've researched lately and heard from countless bird owners, so we are attempting to overhaul her entire diet for something much healthier and mood stabalizing. I've heard so many good things about people switching diets to a Tops and veggies only diet who have hormonal, feather plucking, and even egg laying birds. My senegal ate all of her Tops so fast this morning, she had an extra 10 minutes more to do the smoke alarm at real volume, so I am incredibly optimistic about new diet changes for the first time ever after countless attempts. Photos are of 1. the bane of my existence who is runt sized compared to standard Senegals, and 2. the large pellets in my hand for scale next to the African Grey sized rainbow zupreem pellets. Also 3. Tops in a zip lock (most of the 1lb bag I purchased to try fits in a ziplock sandwich bag. I have ab 2/3 cup or so left in original bag).

## Questions & Answers

**Q: Is TOP's USDA Organic certified?**
A: Yes, TOP's Parrot Food is USDA Organic certified for its pellets, seed mixes, and treats. It offers the only certified organic pellet free from fillers like corn, soy, and peanuts, and uses only natural, organic, non-GMO ingredients. Made in the USA.

**Q: When should I convert my bird to TOP’s pellets?**
A: You can convert your bird to TOP’s pellets anytime. The easiest time is when your baby bird is weaning, but older birds can transition too—it just takes longer.

**Q: Are TOP’s pellets a complete meal?**
A: TOP's pellets are a vital part of a complete diet but should be supplemented with vegetables, fruits, nuts, and seeds for variety. Feed as much as your bird will eat daily, discarding leftovers and offering fresh pellets each day.

**Q: Was TOP’s formula and pellet type developed by an Avian Vet?**
A: Yes, TOP's pellets were created in 2003 by avian nutritionists, including Dr. Alicia McWatters. They are cold-pressed to preserve natural enzymes and nutrients, unlike most brands that bake their pellets, losing nutritional value.

**Q: How should I store the pellets after opening?**
A: Store pellets in a cool, dry place. Do not refrigerate due to moisture. Reseal the bag after opening and use within 8-10 weeks. You can freeze the pellets to extend shelf life, but use them within six months after freezing.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Lasts a long time for one budgie
*by K***N on July 20, 2025*

It is a little expensive but it’s hard to find good food that is also good for your bird so I’m not complaining especially considering that the 4 pound bag last me 4 months. It does smell funny but it’s animal food sooo. At first I thought the pellets may be too big for my budgie because he wasn’t eating it only pecking at it but after a couple weeks of wetting the pellets and slowly letting them dry over the next few weeks he got to where he is comfortable breaking them up completely dry. He came off a hard millet based seed diet when I got him from the pet store so it was hard getting him to eat this new food but now it’s all he eats and I also love the Tops bird seed and so does he. I love how there’s no color to the pellets and that they’re cold pressed rather than baked. I sleep much better at night knowing my budgie is eating healthy.
