Defective
OK, I was very excited that now I will have CD, cassette, MP3 players and the radio - compact, portable and light in one!The radio had great sound and able to turn on the bass. The cassette player was working well.CD player however was not working! So disappointed! On the left side of the boombox there are knobs to turn it on but at the CD indicator it was turning on cassette player only. Obviously it was a defective item, so I'm sending it back.I will order another one because of the quality of sound. Maybe it will not have any defects?

does all I want
I do a lot of project work around the house and like to listen to books on tape / cd while im at it.this little thing has been perfect so far, I have not used it with batteries only and do not really plan on butsound quality is good, easy to understand, if you want to connect an ipod you have to have an extra cable (i did not want anyway). Seems well made for the price. The picture is a little decieving as from a topview the thing is almost round (cd player is on the top which i did not get).

Philips has changed
Good sound,CD and cassette function okay, but radio is disappointing. The leaflet with directions was confusing and hard to read. Older customers need larger and darker print.

Inexpensive solution to MP3 and cassette playing
I had a Panasonic mini-stereo that had excellent sound and features but a short life span. So I've been looking for a substitute stereo to play MP3 discs (which I now have many, made with my PC) and cassette tapes. Guess what? There isn't much out there! I can get a refurbished Panasonic like my old one (or get the old one repaired), RCA makes a unit and Colby makes a unit, and there are a few others out there, but I haven't been thrilled by their product reviews. I decided to try this Phillips from Amazon since the price was reasonable. It's not a great stereo but does what it advertises. I've had no problems with MP3 discs, tapes, regular CDs, or radio. However it lacks features such as tone control (although there is a bass boost button which helps slightly), NO EARPHONE JACK or remote control. The controls for CD and tape play seem to be backward. By that I mean the controls for the CD are near the tape mechanism and the controls for the tape are near the CD mechanism. That will just take a little time for me to get used to. The playing of a MP3 disc seems fine, I can change the "album" (directory in computer terms) with the pressing of a button, and choose the track I want to hear. There are several repeat and program functions also. I wish the display window was LED so I could see it in the dark like my old unit, but alas, it is LCD. The radio works okay for an in apartment experience, all I need is a local AM station anyway. You can also record to tape from CD or radio if you wish.I don't plan to use the batteries (6 "C" cells) but will stick to the AC power cord provided (it was set to 110 when it arrived). I can't speak about reliability or life expectancy, in this day and age, it seems must products are doomed to die within a couple of years. I am willing to accept that. This unit does what I need it to for now and if I have problems, I will report them here at a later date. For a simple portable and inexpensive solution to play cassette tapes (which I prefer for audio books) and MP3 discs, I can recommend this unit.

Badly designed
I was very disappointed in this boombox so I returned it. It feels cheaply constructed, it does not display where it is on a track when playing in MP3 CD mode, and as anyone who listens to MP3 CD audio books knows, some of the tracks are formatted to contain an hour or more of content, so if you want to stop and listen later or play the CD in the car or elsewhere you have no idea where you are and have to wait until the end of the track to stop it, or play it fast forward until you find where you left off, and if you are 45 -60 + minutes into it that can take quite awhile and is very aggravating. Also, when running on batteries you can unplug it without losing power but plugging it back in causes it to shut completely off and again without knowing where you were on any given track. I would not recommend this unit to anyone.

Defective cassette recorder
I bought it mainly for the cassette player function. Fast delivery (big plus), but the cassette play doesn't work. CD player is good though. Thinking of returning the item.

Well made and easy to operate
I purchased this player for my Mother who is 89. I had no problem teaching her how to operate it. The sound is good and the over all performance is great. She is enjoying it everyday.

Okay but Disappointing
The Philips mp3 cd/radio/cassette player with am/fm radio is okay but not quite as nice as I was hoping for. It does play mp3s that I burn off my computer (one of the reasons why I bought it). The sound quality is good. The am/fm radio is not digital and therefore a pain whenever I want to switch from am to fm or simply change stations. There's also a ringing sound that I never used to get with my former digital radio. Also, the markings for the various functions are very small. You need very good eyesight to see them. I have yet to use the cassette player and so can't comment on it. The size and weight of the unit is smaller and lighter than what I was expecting... which is a good thing. If I had to do it over again, and given that I seldom listen to cassettes anymore, I'd look for a cd/mp3/am/fm digital radio player without the cassette playing feature instead.
