The rubber insert acts both as a sealer and sound damper reducind the noise produced during tumbling. There is, however, no speed control. My garage floor, where my other tumbler runs problem-free, appears not to be level enough for this bigger one; it started making strange noises after about half an hour there, whereas it runs fine in my laundry room. The machine is well-made and the lid remains securely in place. The tumbling barrel lined with a heavy rubber material shows no wear after a couple of years of tumbling glass shards into beach glass.
