There are 2 speakers in the package. I installed them in my son's car and he says "They sound dope." Whatever that means. Lol

No they do not need an amp, they will replace factory door speakers, they would sound better with an amp though.

What's the purpose of the front speaker cover for? For just looks or protects the soaker foam?

I would assume it would be for protection if the speaker was exposed. I didn't need them because my speakers are protected by the door panels covers
