Review: A quality orchid mix - My phalenopsis orchid came in a mix with long fibered sphagnum moss and I'm an underwaterer so it was important to me to get a mix including that. I'd estimate this is about half long fiber sphagnum. The rest is bark, charcole, the biggest chunks of perlite I ever saw (but not so large as to be akward) and brown round things I think are like the balls used in hydroponics. The mix fluffed up beautifully when I took it out of the bag and moistened it, there was enough to fill two 6" pots. It drains beautifuly and retains moisture well. I haven't bought orchid media in a long time so I had a bit of sticker shock when I ordered it but I got my money's worth. This will keep my orchid stable, well drained, and properly watered and I don't expect it to break down any time soon! The Dark Imperial had very little moss while the Gold Imperial was 65% moss. The pictures show the amount of potting materials I had left in each MINI Bag after repotting my orchid. After watering my orchid with the new potting materials, I was able to confirm that the mixed material naturally created a lot of air/ space which ensures a functional mix of water retention within the moss and other material while allowing for quick and thorough drainage. I'm thinking of transferring my phal in a clay pot.** A: I strongly recommend against putting Phals in any clay pot, certainly unless the inside of the pot is well glazed. Phal roots, more than any other orchid's roots, grab anything they touch, and will adhere strongly in unglazed clay, so you cannot repot them, which they like you to do annually, without destroying a lot of the roots. I had more than 400 Phals at one time, a few years ago, and learned a lot in maintaining them. **Q: Is the mix ready to use or will I have to disinfect it fisrt?** A: It is ready to use out of the bag. My orchids looked so much better after the repot I did with this mix. Very fresh. Would recommend! **Q: Would this be good for monstera sp peru?** A: Sorry this took so long! I think this would be great for a Monstera, the thing is you need to add some soil... at least half and half... The Orchid mix has the sphagnum moss you need, lots of stuff for aeration, you just need to add the soil. I'm not sure if I'd do half and half or add 3/4 soil. I'm only imagining here, sometimes you need to get in there and feel it. Such a great idea though, wish I'd thought of it!
